My friend feels it sounds dated and I couldn't disagree more. I've just listened to it for the first time in quite a while and it still sounds SO good!
I'd agree to a point, but dated doesn't necessarily mean bad. I would probably prefer that sound to a lot of what actually is popular today.

I think this is probably where I align too. It's "dated" in that it is so obviously early 10s music but then that's a great compliment because pop music was thriving then.

Cannot quite believe this 11 years old now!! (I think yesterday was the official anniversary wasnt it)

Just read through some of the comments from the day the song premiered and some of those initial reactions were very surprising! Interested to see how those people who weren’t keen at first feel now (tbf I actually remember not fully getting the song on first listens).

It’s one of her classics now, not one of my most played but one of the most important songs of her career and forever a staple for tours etc. I think performing this as part of her Super Bowl set list was very right

I have always loved this, and always will. Sure, there are some parts it sounds like Madonna but essentially it was thematically important LGBTQ+ anthem and will remain legendary and a theme song for Pride festivals around the globe <3

They lied to you until today. Express Yourself is far from original, it's a blatant copy of Staple Singers' Respect Yourself, listen below:

She didn't even bother changing the whole name :deadbanana:. Worst of all, she used her plagiarism and claimed it as her original creation to attack an industry newcomer. Madonna is a legend but some of her attitudes disgust me.

How does Madonna's song being inspired by something else stop this sounding like Madonna in places? Even if Madonna's was a cover, vocally and rhythmically this does sound quite Madonna? It's not a negative - she's the blueprint and ultimate female pop star.
