December 6, 201014 yr Author You wouldn't think a song like 'Omen' could make the top 5 in 2009, so I have to assume The Prodigy have always just been far more successful than you'd expect from a band like them. Obviously 100% deserved though. 'Breathe' is my favourite song of all time, and there are a few other The Prodigy songs in my all-time top 10. Incredible band. I know this is like the 1,000,007th time I've mentioned it but it really is quite extraordinary that I was born while my favourite song of all time was at #1 (19 Nov 1996). What are the odds? from 1994-98 indie ruled the chart in a way it hasnt since - cowell and waterman reacted to prodigy and bands like that by making sure marketing dominated the charts by introducing westlife and cheesy pop to the top 10 again.a bit like the reaction to punk in the late 70s - by the early 80 the new romantics had taken over!!!the establishment always reacts to sucess of punk music!!

Might've done better than now, but there were several genres a lot more popular.
December 7, 201014 yr It depends what you mean by "rule". It definitely had a strong presence in the singles chart on a weekly basis but many of the songs didn't hang around for long so in terms of the biggest hits of the year it never really dominated. Very strong albums-wise though.
December 8, 201014 yr 2 Become 1 set a chart first by becoming the first ever single to enter the actual Christmas chart itself as a new entry at number one. The Spice Girls had intended to release the single on December 9, 1996 but held back the release for a week to give the Dunblane charity single a free run at the top. Instead the single was released on December 16 and entered the chart on Sunday December 22 (the chart dated Saturday December 28 1996).
