Time for the Black Eyed Peas to be #1

The X Factor effect comes into play once more, as The Time (Dirty Bit) by Black Eyed Peas rises to #1 after their performance on the show. The track was first released midweek and entered at #11 then rose to #7, before dropping back down to #11 and rising last week to #6 before rising to #1 this week. This is the fifth #1 in total now for the peas, with the first being Where Is The Love featuring uncredited vocals from Justin Timerlake in 2003. Last year of course they scored 3 #1s – Boom Boom Pow, the million selling I Gotta Feeling and Meet Me Halfway … latter also beat Leona Lewis after an X Factor performance. Next week we will likely see the X Factor winner at the top, although romour has it that the other finalists are releasing their songs too but not sure if they’ll be chart eligible.

Willow – Whip My Hair enters at #2

The 10 year old daughter of Will Smith releases her debut single this week, after being #1 in the middle of the week, Whip My Hair settles for second place in the end. This is the first single from her yet to be titled forthcoming album and sees her drop the last name to record under Willow. Willow’s father Will Smith has of course scored #1s with Boom Shake The Room and Men In Black as well as several other big hits in the 1990s. Willow is thus the youngest act to score a UK top 5 hit for several decades, following from Justin Bieber earlier this year who was 16 when Baby hit #3.

Michael Jackson feat Akon – Hold My Hand enters at #11

Just missing the top 10 this week by the narrowest of margins is the return of Michael Jackson with “new” material. Before his death last year, MJ had recorded lots of new material in preparation for his comeback and return to the limelight. One of the tracks he worked on alongside US star Akon, that Michael reportedly wanted released as lead single was Hold My Hand. The track thus returns Michael to the top 40 for the first time since all the post-death re-entries, with the highest being Man In The Mirror. An album of previously recorded “new” material is released next week, a sure fire top 5 album I’d say.

Alexandra Burke – The Silence enters at #16

2008’s X Factor winner Alexandra Burke makes her return with sixth single release The Silence, in at #16 following a performance on the show. The track appears on the original release of her album Overcome as well as the Deluxe Edition in a slightly remixed version. As the track has been available to buy for over a year, this is the very first Alexandra Burke single so far to miss the top 10. She has so far amassed 3 #1s – Hallelujah, Bad Boys and Start Without You, as well as #4 All Night Long and #8 Broken Heals.

Kylie Minogue – Better Than Today re-enters at #32

Australian superstar singer Kylie Minogue returns to the top 40 this week with her new single Better Than Today following its full release. The track was performed on X Factor 5 weeks ago but unusually failed to chart, then 2 weeks ago made #40 and last week dropped sharply. Making #32, Better Than Today is Kylie’s very first single release to miss the top 30 and only 3rd to miss top 20. Since her 1987 debut, Kylie’s first 10 singles all went top 5 with 27 top 10 hits in total over her 23 year career. This may be her lowest charting single yet (aside from The One download only release) but she still has a brilliant chart record.

Take That progress to a fourth week at #1

Take That’s huge sales continue as their latest album Progress sold its millionth copy this week and stays at #1 for 4 weeks. Behind the boys, Michael Buble climbs to #2 following an ITV documentary and Olly Murs drops a place to #3. There are no new entries within the top 30, only a re-entry for Alexandra Burke’s deluxe edition of Overcome. Bryn Terfal, Plain White Ts and The Priests did release new albums this week though.

Opinion

Personally I hate The Time by Black Eyed Peas and think it totally ruins Time Of My Life, however in my eyes is the lesser of the 2 evils. Whip My Hair is absolutely terrible, I feel sorry with Willow who I think is being pushed into stardom at far too young an age. Anyway I quite like the MJ and Akon collaboration and think it works well, even if it isn’t nearly as good as most of Jacko’s previous work. I think The Silence is Alex Burke’s best song yet, I have liked all her other songs but this pure class for me. Whilst I have only liked a handful of Kylie singles in the past, I actually quite like Better Than Today. I’m not happy that the Manics missed out but am glad Flo Rida missed as his new song is rubbish.

Thanks Zeus that's interesting ... I would include MJ's History as it is a hits compilation and a studio album at the same time! ;-)
