I'd like to hear songs that are charting outside the top 40 too, but if you did that you'd have to cut more songs out.

I'd like more information on the acts with new entries each week - clips of that act's top 5 best-selling singles would be interesting

As for foreign charts - maybe there could be a different rundown each week alternating between U.S., Australian, French, German charts - but really I'm not sure how interested people would be in it. Maybe just the Billboard chart. Bruno used to run down the top 10 every now and again.

Those are absolutely AMAZING ideas  Even if they just did an american chart thing it would be cool, but I wish they would do the European charts, my local radio had a US Chart Show (actually the proper Top 40 show with Casey Kasern(sp?)) and a European top 10 show. Bubbling unders wouldn't have made sense 2-3 years ago, it would have just been a list of songs that weren't good enough to enter the top 40, but now with the downlaod era in full force, many songs between 41-75 (I think that should be the secion, not just top 50) are massive future hits in the making.

Yeah, I had Europe in mind too. Perhaps they could briefly run down the top 10 of Billboard's European Hot 100, and play any of the songs that aren't in the UK chart? I mean, the sales and airplay in the UK do contribute towards the European chart, so it's not like it's totally innapropriate.

Either that, or Radio 1 could have a whole hour sometime during the week devoted to European charts. I'd DEFINITELY listen to that, and it would be great for those amazing European songs to get a play on Radio 1 too. Plus, some of them eventually become future hits in the UK anyway. If they did that, they'd've been playing songs like Stereo Love and Alors on danse since 2008! :o

1) Get rid of the SMS part - they would save money this way. This seems to be the standard in a lot of BBC shows - Eurovision this year for me was ruined by this. Instead of blowing money on these lines give us a proper chart show and Eurovision entry.

2) Sack Reggie - He is nothing but a kids presenter end of.

3) Play the full chart and hire someone with a lot of knowledge like Greg James or tempt Mark Goodier back into his job.

True, but I don't really mind cutting songs that have been on the chart for god damn ages anyway. Like, I don't care if they don't play Love The Way You Lie, though cutting out a song that's only been on the charts for 2 weeks is a bit more annoying.

Anyway, if they don't play them, I think they should at least mention them and maybe play clips. My point is that the some of the artists outside the top 40 are much bigger these days and some people might care that Kings of Leon were at #69 last week, or Cheryl Cole was at #63, or Manic Street Preachers were at #44 etc. Compared to ten years ago when not so many people would have cared that Quo Vidas were at #49 or M Dubs (maybe this is where N Dubz got their name from ) were at #59.

Foreign charts are an interesting idea but I agree with AcerBen, not many people would be interested. Even as its own show I doubt it would get many listeners as the amount of people who care about what is doing well in Europe is simply too small relatively speaking. I imagine it's the same in other countries as well.

Yeah, I would love that, but I can't see Radio 1, or the UK as a whole, ever taking that much interest in the European market. I think what someone needs to do is create a station dedicated to European music. There's a French radio station just launched in London (suprisingly called French Radio London). I can parlay francais, so maybe I should offer my services for a new French chart show? :)

Edit: What superbossanova said :kink:

To be honest, playing the songs outside the top 40 even as mini clips would be a great idea. I mean as we see now, songs debut outside the 40 and climb up the charts. On top of that, there is this new trend of an act having two or three top 40 singles, and the fourth single missing the boat all together due to a lack of promo. This could encourage sales.

Yeah, and I was also thinking of all those album tracks, such as Wonderman, Coming Home, S&M, which sell remarkably well for such little promotion, only 6 days of sales, rather than 7, go top 40 on iTunes, etc, but miss the top 40. It'd be nice to see them played.

Also, true that a lot of people might not care about a European top 10 countdown, but then again, Radio 1 do seem to have a lot of shows that we'd think nobody would care about, especially at night-time (although I guess that's why they're on that late in the first place ). Also, if they did do it during the chart show, it'd only be maybe 10 minutes of the entire week, if they countdown, and play a couple of the songs, which I don't think is that bad, considering. This time last year we were having 10 minutes each week of Reggie talking about Michael Buble.

My proposals would be

*Get rid of Reggie and replace him with Greg James

*New producer as well

*Play at least 35 of the 40 songs.

*Play excerpts of new entries between 41 and 75 at the start of the show after update from midweek.

*Extend album chart to ten songs.

*Full rundown just before the number 1 record.

- Get rid of Reggie- replace with Greg or Scott, tbh if this happened, then most problems will stop

- the producers should get their facts right

- get rid of 'chart trivia' and 'top 5 X Factor moments'- they are pointless

- the interviews should be focused on the music- nothing else, and none of those ridiculously stupid games

- read the top 10 albums, and don't bother reading out all the contenders that don't make the top 5 and then totally ignoring them when the top 5 are announced

- include sales info

- a minimum of 35 out of 40 songs played

heres some things they can add:

- their definitely should be a retro section, maybe like there is in the chart thread- play the number 1s from last year, 5 years ago and 10 years ago

- maybe a number 1s in different countries section too

- 'bubbling under' section, songs that just missed out that could be big

- a section at the end where they play what could be huge next week

If I returned to work for the BBC (Not likely, as it's now certified a shower), first of all axe Radio One altogether, change Radio 2's name to reflect a more approriate audience. The R2 Audience age range is about 15-45. Broadcast the Top 40 on the new R2 (think I'd call Radio 2, Family Radio). The host of the Top 40 wouldn't be any of the current gang. It'd would be Sean Tilley, dynamic presenter with lots of Radio experience in his 40s. Lots of fantastic jingles & sound effects denoting fallers/climbers/new entries. Number jingles with the word "Number" included at front, not this blink & you miss "8" stuff. Slick stuff, hardly any chat, all 40 records played in 2 hours & 35minutes, that's all the time you need for 40 songs.

Starting at 4-6.35 The Complete no nonsense Top 40 Countdown followed by the Clicks to Pick next Sunday...the 25 mins of New hits/Bubblers. That's it, no stupid texts from 5 year olds, no emails. Just factful info. So, slick it makes your head throb with dynamic presentation.

Best suggestion of the lot.R1 is going downhill fast and the DJs are going from bad to worse because they think they are more important than actually playing music.R2 now has double the audience share of R1 which is loosing its relevance. The chart show should be just that a show that plays the whole Top 40 not picking and choosing what to play, not speeding songs up, not taking digs at acts and Reggie is just not entertaining enough and should go.

Axing Radio 1 would be a terrible idea. It may be losing audience compared to Radio 2 but it still has a notable impact on the charts. And I think a lot of people on this site underestimate how important they are as a station. They push so many artists into the charts, ones that wouldn't get there without them. A huge percentage of the British artists currently in the charts these days would have struggled without Radio 1 support. Seriously, axing it would be preposterous and would only end up making the chart even more exclusive. I don't know why anybody would even think otherwise. Some people don't seem to think things through and have some personal vendetta against R1 (probably because they didn't playlist Alexandra or some other pop tart ), and think making it even MORE difficult for new artists to break through (when it's already quite hard as it is) is a good idea (which is what would happen if Radio 1 was axed). Even "merging" it with R2 would be a bad idea. They work fine separately; Radio 2 has its MoR and their loyal support of some of the ageing artists, while Radio 1 is for music that's more relevant today, with newer, emerging artists and big chart-toppers. Merging it with R2 would just make more music miss out which wouldn't be a good thing.

On topic, even moving the chart show to Radio 2 would be an odd move... I mean, how many of the songs in the top 40 are even on their playlist? Maybe a couple? It's just a completely separate musical entity really  R2 might have more listeners but how many of them even give a crap about the charts? Well, I don't know, but I would bet it would be less than how many of R1's.

i would like them to tell you at the end of the show the big new releases of the following week!!

also the chart should be factual and not trying to get a larger (teenage) fanbase!!

its not ALL reggies fault tho, its the producers on radio 1 that tell him the type of show they want!!

the chart shw can be improved by following these 3 little words

BRING BACK FEARNE!

the chart shw can be improved by following these 3 little words

BRING BACK FEARNE!

No way!

I can only echo everyone else: Get rid of Reggie Yeates. I feel sometimes i have stumbled onto a chat on the top deck of a bus when i am listening to the chart. Mind numbing texts, chats with faceless dull Grime artists, incorrect chart details, in jokes, bad pronunciation......the list is endless. I never used to miss the Top 40, from the glory days of Bruno and Mark, to the barely adequate Wes Butters, to the cheeky chappie style of JK and Joel-i was there through each change of style and tone, but now I find myself skipping most of the show as I cannot stand the appalling shambles the show has become.

So, sack Reggie, employ Scott Mills-he is fantastic.

Less guests, I like the odd chat here and there-but not with anyone who has absolutley nothing to say, and given 20 minutes to say it in.

Get a producer who checks facts-it's not difficult if you have access to the flaming Internet.

Recap each chart section.

Play the top ten albums.

Pretty simple. If that is done, I will be a regular committed listener again!

I'd like to hear songs that are charting outside the top 40 too, but if you did that you'd have to cut more songs out.

they used to recap past hits years ago when Mark Goodier did it, i loved that aspect of the chart. it was far better then
