Well, I like to surprise people every now and again. ^_^ This does tend to happen though once every year (maybe twice? :P ) where a song that I've grown to adore despite absolutely zero success in the UK does well for me. 2010 has seen Hurts, Keri Hilson, Stromae and Sia getting to #1 with no UK chart success (or very little). Now Crystal Castle featuring Robert Smith can be added to that list. I think The Cure are a fantastic band and maybe because my music tastes are deemed "commercial", people probably think I don't like these bands from the 80s when I do have a major soft spot for 80s music.

You should've had your top 2 the other way round instead. :P They have been my most played tracks over the last week. In fact, Nicole nearly ended up dropping to no. 4 with Rihanna 'Only Girl' just slipping to #3. Then I saw the video to 'Poison' and decided to put it #3 after all.

anyway i nlove the top 2 although i cant believe a great christmassy song by coldplay didnt get youre xmas no1?!!good to see boots by the killers made the top 10, great track.does youre chart accept reentries for old songs like the pogues?

Agree 100%, I can see this track is floating around my top 40 well into 2011 - it doesn't get boring.

I've only started getting more into Family Guy this year so when I realised there was a Facebook campaign to get this to #1, I decided to chart it myself. It looks set to plummet in the UK chart tomorrow but it won't drop anywhere near as badly for me.

Well, I personally still wouldn't regard 'WMN' as "gold" but it's good. 'Only Girl' is gold as are quite a few Rihanna tracks - even some that never hit #1 in my chart.

Yes, this is one of my modern classics. The video is brilliant and really adds to the song. I don't think I will ever get bored of listening to this song.

Again, this is one of my personal modern day classics. I thought this was brilliant from the first time I heard it.

The production on Biffy Clyro's version is much better as it has that rawness needed in proper rock tracks. Matt's backing track sounds like it's trying to be really edgy and rocky but not quite hitting the mark. However, I do think Matt Cardle has a unique vocal style and hope he does better than Joe McElderry/Leon Jackson in the long run.

Really? :o I think 'Teenage Dream' has been the weakest single from this era so far. 'Firework' sounds like an anthem in comparison.

Sometimes this happens at the lower end of the chart. You get tracks that enter low down because I think they're good enough to chart in this region. Other songs drop down but then I might see the video a few times on one of the music channels and it gives the song a little boost.

Again like Tinie, climbing again probably by default because other songs that were higher last week have got boring more quickly so the genuine hits will stick around creating a more interesting chart run in the process.

The way I compile my chart is quite "ordered" to be honest. Other posters chart songs the second they first hear them, then they get bored of them, then they like them again and they have bizzare chart runs like 01-03-13-15-07-02-04-02-01-01-01-05-11-16-09-01-01-OUT-05(re)-08-etc.. I just can't bring myself to have a personal chart where a track has this almost random looking chart run. So when I use the word "ordered", the style of my chart is very much the same as it was back in 2004 - similar to how the UK charts used to be back then. If I chart a song I think is excellent, it enters at #1 and depending on how much I like the song determines how many weeks it stays there. However, there have been times when I've charted a song, and other a number of weeks the track has grown on me more and this is reflected in my chart as the track climbs.

 

I use the UK release schedule as a guide - again, I don't like the idea of just entering everything in the same week because I know I'd be completely unsatisfied with a song entering at no. 12 when I feel it deserves to go top 5. Then again, there might be terrible period where there are hardly any new songs I like so I'd end up with a static chart for weeks until I discovered a new track I really liked.

 

Technically, this isn't my Xmas chart as it's dated 18/12/10 but I can see why you'd think that. My new chart is due today but I haven't even thought about writing it up yet - will probably be posted tomorrow evening (we've got relatives visting later on and all day tomorrow). In fact, my new chart might not even be posted until Monday. :drama:

 

My pre-release doesn't just include upcoming UK releases but also big European hits. I introduced a rule a few years back where any European hits (without a UK release) that enter the HET30 (see my sig, or Global Charts forum ;) ) can qualify to enter my personal chart.

 

I like to have some form of chart rule and don't want it to be so lose to the point where anything can chart - be it an album track, or an old track from the 90s I've listened to recently. My chart rules are fairly strict but I prefer the chart to be compiled this way.

 

I'm not one for re-entering singles on a regular basis but for eg; I re-entered Hurts 'Wonderful Life' upon its UK release. The reason being it had already been #1 in my chart but fell down the chart relatively fast hence not performing as well as I thought it should've done in my YTD chart. When the track was given a UK release, I thought it was the best opportunity to correct this so Hurts charted again and ultimately got another boost in the YTD chart.

 

As much as I love 'Fairytale Of New York', I find the idea of re-entering the same songs in December really lame. :lol: To be honest, I did this in December 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. In December 2008 I decided against this as it just seemed stupid to chart a song for a mere 3 weeks at a time. So no, if I do re-enter a track it's because it's going to spend a good few weeks in my top 40 again rather than just re-entering for 3 weeks, dropping out only to resurface 12 months later for 3 weeks.

my actual personal chart is called 'top 30 songs of the moment' so its like a historical account of what im listening too at that moment in my life - thats why i love the charts in fact!!

 

most of my songs do start low down the chart and rise up as i usually start liking a song and then it peaks with airplay.eg my current no1 which is coldplay christmas lights entered on 5/12 at no20-14-7-1-1 and should fall fast on sunday week(although i am loving it more now than when it first entered at no1 - would it be wrong to have a christmas no1 still in january?!???)

If I was to chart songs purely because I'd heard it, I'd be charting old tracks all year round. I still enjoy listening to tracks from the 80s, 90s and 00s but would never consider charting them. If that was the case then I'd be charting (for eg) Fleetwood Mac 'Everywhere', George Harrison 'Got My Mind Set On You' amongst other old tracks.

 

I've not even heard the re-recorded 'December Song' by George Michael. His version from last year did get to #6 in my chart but like all great Xmas related tracks, had fallen out of my top 40 after 3 weeks.

 

The way I compile my chart has never changed - it's still like the UK charts circa 2004 where tracks entered at no. 1 but occasionally songs would chart low but climb over several weeks documenting how the song has grown in popularity. This tends to happen to non-UK releases as I'm more likely to hear songs released in the UK. However, I find time to listen to tracks I like from across Europe - or low profile singles that have been released in the UK but get very little airplay - a good example of this currently is Patrick Wolf 'Time Of Your Life'.

 

It's your chart, so if you wanted to chart a Xmas track in Janaury, that's entirely up to you. For me, maybe the first week in January as I start to remove the "deadwood" but after that, my chart will always focus on the most recent/brand new tracks. Always have, always will. :D
