Just wondering, does Tinie Tempah do ANY tracks on his own or does he have to collaborate with others to make himself successful?? I can't think of one track he's done as a solo (apart from Pass Out which although uncredited, had Labrinth helping him out!)

No, it's just that Tinie is a rapper (and a fantastic one at that). He can't sing, and he can't produce, so he gets people who can sing to sing his hooks for him.

But there are some tracks that exist which are solely credited to Tinie, but they're just not singles.

Also, I take it you don't listen to a lot of hip hop music if you're finding this weird. :D

Tinie is a rapper, not a producer, so Labrinth has produced a few tracks for him. Likewize, Katy Perry is a singer, not a producer, so she has other people produce songs for her too (except they're not credited).

Lol, nah, not much of a rap/hip hop fan really, I don't really know the ins and outs of how that side of music works. I won't knock his rapping skills (not a fan of it, but can't deny he's good at it!) but if you look at an act like Eminem, he's a rapper who never sings but the majority of his tracks are solo pieces.

Having said that, and I'm contradicting myself a bit here, Eminem has recently started to collaborate more, I guess it's just the way the music business is changing over time.

I see what you mean. Eminem does actually sing, if you can call it that. He does sing the hook in a lot of his songs (from his recent songs, he sings the hook in Not Afraid, No Love and That's All She Wrote), but he admits that his vocals aren't amazingly strong, so when he needs to, he gets a proper vocalist, and he sometimes samples the hook from another song, if it's appropriate. And in songs such as Love the Way You Lie, it'd just be very innappropriate if he sang the hook, obviously. Unless the song is really about violent masturbation or something.

But a lot of the time, in hip hop, since there's so many collabs, a lot of the time the artist doesn't get a say in it. Like Eminem probably didn't know that Hayley Williams would be singing the hook for Airplanes II when he first decided to write a verse for it, because it was up to B.o.B and his team to choose who sings the hook. Infact, Airplanes II is another example of a rapper singing, since B.o.B sings the bridge in that song.

And there's also some Eminem solo tracks which aren't actually solo tracks, but the person who sings the hook isn't credited, such as 25 To Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIgVs7x8nNo (This song is gorgeous, btw ). I guess that's a bit like Labrinth not being credited on Pass Out though.

I've also noticed that Eminem is collabing more though. Like he never used to do things like Rihanna and Pink collabs (not that I have a problem with that). He's also using a wider variety of producers now. Like it used to be a lot of Dr. Dre, but now he's doing an increasing amount of tracks with the likes of Alex Da Kid, so your observation about Eminem collabing with more people than previously is very correct. I think some great commercial songs have come out of it though.

But yeah, I see what you mean. I think particularly with singles, a lot of rappers get proper singers to do their choruses. I think it's just more commercial that way. Like the other vocalist's fans might support the song too, and it can get the song more interest, radio airplay, youtube hits, etc. if you collab with another popular artist.

But like with someone like David Guetta. It's unlikely he'll ever release a solo single, because he can't sing, so it'd just be an instrumental, which would be difficult to get on the radio. If he can get Fergie, Kelly Rowland, Rihanna to sing on the song, it gets much more media attention, will get played on the radio, and to be honest, I think the public enjoy it more, since they can sing along, etc.

EDIT: Gosh, I wrote a massive essay, most of which had nothing to do with your question, and you probably already knew most of it anyway. I just get carried away like that. Sorry. :D

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but if you're being serious, thanks. :D It only takes me a few minutes though, as I have all those thoughts floating around in my head constantly. The main problem is that I think faster than I type, so I end up going on for ages and really off-topic.

hado, yes, Pass Out is pretty good, and is credited solely to Tinie. However, like 25 To Life which I mentioned in my essay-post, the hook is sang by an uncredited vocalist, so it's debateable whether it's really a collab or not.

In Pass Out it's Labrinth singing the hook (and he also produced the song, so he's clearly a talented guy)! He appears in the video for Pass Out, I believe, and he also sings the hook for Frisky, along with producing that track too (hence why they sound very similar, but Tinie said it was intended for them to sound similar, and he thought the public wanted "more of Pass Out" before getting Written in the Stars). Another track that Labrinth has produced for Tinie is Intro, from Tinie's album. Tinie is releasing another album late this year, so I'm hoping we get more Labrinth collabs on it. :)
