Yeah. Also, what I find with most commercial radio stations is that their playlist is basically the charts. So they will play British songs if they get really high in the charts, but they very rarely play them before, unless they're established artists. Pass Out is the classic example. Very, very rarely played outside of Radio 1 before it was released, but after it got to #1, commercial radio stations suddenly started playlisting it.

But obviously, this makes it very difficult, as you struggle to get into the charts in the first place without radio airplay, and without radio airplay, it's very difficult to get into the charts. It's quite a circular tbh.

And, in the other sense, if the charts were 90% British songs, then the playlists of those commercial radio stations would be 90% British songs. Those particular radio stations don't have anything against the country the song comes from, the genre of the song, etc. But again, we can't get 90% British songs in the charts without general radio support (note, I definitely don't want 90% British songs in the chart, I'm just exaggerating a bit ). It's like another circle. Once you're in the circle, it's fine, so long as you continue giving out good songs, but if you're not "in the circle", it's very difficult to get in there.

Another possible route to success is if you feature on popular songs done by another artist. Bruno Mars did this well on a worldwide scale this year, by appearing on two massive hip hop songs (Nothin' On You and Billionaire), and was already hugely famous before he released his debut single. Labrinth has done this on a UK scale. Again, he featured on two massively popular hip hop songs (Pass Out and Frisky), so by the time he released his first single, he was already quite well-known, and I know a few radio stations that played the song well before its release.

Exactly! Merge these two sentences and you get exactly what's going on in UK radio stations nowadays!
