January 9, 201114 yr The Zutons! Of all the times for me to check the thread eh! Lots of good stuff so far before them though, especially Long Blondes, Röyksopp, LCD Soundsystem, Little Boots and Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

If 'Mansard Roof', 'Campus' or 'Walcott' had been released after 'A-Punk' they'd be a surefire top 20! Still, they're an excellent band who did a rare thing by following up an excellent debut with another excellent album.

Like a few of the acts that have gone, I care for these no more. But I will always show a great deal of affection for their debut album 'Get Born'. It was a brilliant album and soundtracked my 2004. Unfortunately one moderately successful album and they got ideas way above their station, deciding they should be playing stadiums throughout the world. A couple of listens to their follow up album and it was quite clear that they most definitely were not, the singles off it only charted so highly because I was trying to still like them. Still, 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl' is as good as ever, and 'Look What You've Done' is still lovely.

But he has released some fantastic singles to go with his average ones, and always has, right from the excellent 'Fix Up, Look Sharp'. He's often underperformed too, his first two entries both being definite top 20s if I'd been doing this wen released in 2003, along with 'Holiday' and 'Stand Up Tall' which both deserved top 10 really.
January 9, 201114 yr Author Great start and all solid acts. You've also reminded me just how much I miss the Long Blondes. They were great Thanks for commenting, I miss the Long Blondes too. Although at least they split for a good reason I suppose, maybe one day they'll return.

Lots of good stuff so far before them though, especially Long Blondes, Röyksopp, LCD Soundsystem, Little Boots and Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Hmm yes, great timing! At least I've been honest about my occasional lapse in taste I suppose, I could have accidentally calculated them to be just outside the top 40, especially when looking at the acts who just missed out. Good to see you liking quite a few anyway!

But then they deserve it as I've never felt they've released their best songs as singles, I think my four worst (or least favourite) Bloc Party songs have all been released as singles. Some of them have criminally underperformed though, 'I Still Remember' is hauntingly beautiful and deserved top 10 at the very least.
January 10, 201114 yr You don't really like The Prayer do you? It's pretty much my favourite thing they've ever done...

Still, their previous albums were all excellent, if I'd got into them properly before 'Supernature' then I'm sure their 'Black Cherry' singles would've been much more successful and they'd be appearing much higher up.
January 10, 201114 yr Author You don't really like The Prayer do you? It's pretty much my favourite thing they've ever done... I like it a lot more now, I was massively disappointed with it when it came out but it doesn't rank amonst their best. My 3 worst BP songs would be 'Flux' (which got annoying very quickly), 'Talons', 'Hunting for Witches', they're the only ones I don't actually like.

I found their debut album was very weird, I loved it then I hated it, then I loved it again. Now whenever I listen to it I do find it very enjoyable. Their second album? Not so much but I don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be, 'A Heady Tale' is definitely amongst their best, I was just massively disappointed in them at the time of its release so it had to settle for a low peak. A shame they're only going to be remembered for 'Chelsea Dagger', they were so much better than that.

I do think they've lost their way a bit recently, I don't think I could name a single off their previous album now. But they have released some great music in the past 7 years, including two of the most beautiful songs I;ve heard in that time, and I'm not talking about 'Chasing Cars' either, more the afforementioned 'Run' and the stunning 'Set the Fire to the Third Bar' which features Martha Wainwright whose vocals work brilliantly with those of Gary Lightbody. The song is so good,

I loved the singles off their debut but felt the album left a lot to be desired, 2005's 'Demon Days' was something entirely different though, a stunning album home to a couple of modern classics which both made number one on my chart. Their album last year was impressive too, criminally underappreciated with a host of excellent guests.

If I'd done a Personal Chart since I started listening to music properly I can't see anyone else being number one. But it hasn't been going that long so they settle for 15, which isn't bad given they've hardly been at their best in recent years. 'Language Sex Violence Other' spawned some great singles, most notably 'Dakota' and was something of a return to form, but they'd gone off the boil again after that until the much improved 2009 album 'Keep Calm and Carry On'.

No, it's not different and no, it's not innovative but do any other band who make this type of music come anywhere near as close to being as good? No, no they don't. 'Their 'X&Y' material (well 'Speed of Sound' mainly) probably overperformed for me but they made up for that with the excellent 'Viva La Vida', by far my favourite Coldplay album which was home to four excellent singles.

'Good Luck' was my first ever number one and they soon followed it with their second 'Plug it In'. They've continued to release good music since and bar the odd slip up it's all been decent, a shame they don't have the same kind of mainsteam success any more though.

Their debut was absolutely glorious and produced three massive long running hits, their second was an average album but it had some decent singles and their third, well the less said the better. They may be a bit rubbish now but 'A Certain Trigger' is an album I will always adore.

Since then the single has gone on to be one my favourite few of all time, and its parent album is one of my very favourite albums ever. Since then they've continued to release great albums and great singles, although the recent 'Ready to Start' is fairly average for an Arcade Fire song.
