Their debut album was one I was very impressed with and one which I grew to love. I massively anticipated their second but ended up being very disappointed by it, pretty much killing off my interest in the band, especially as they seemed to have become very arrogant too. I wasn't expecting anything with their 3rd album but it turned out to be brilliant, lead single 'Fire' took a long while to get into but overall it was their most accomplished work yet.

Kings of Leon had always been a band whose songs I either really liked, or didn't like at all. I'd never dreamed of buying one of their albums. Then at the end of 2007 I decided to buy 'Because of the Times' and it was brilliant, I quickly bought their previous two efforts and eagerly anticipated their fourth. Whilst I wasn't disappointed per se, I did feel the album could've been a lot better. I don't think I can begrudge them their success either, they'd been working their way up as a band slowly developing a dedicated fanbase (people forget their 3rd album sold over half a million) and both 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody' are both brilliant songs, as good as a mainstream rock band are ever likely to make.

Considering they've hardly been at the best over the past seven years, to have released as many great singles as they have is some great feat and just shows how good they were beforehand. They can mix sheer brilliance like 'Swoon' and 'Galvanise' with the utterly bizarre such as 'The Salmon Dance'. Anyone else would surely have been ridiculed for releasing it, but from the Chemical Brothers, it just sounded so right. Their recent album 'Further' is definitely their best since the 90s.

Their chart positions would suggest that I used to love Franz Ferdinand and have gone off them with each album they make but that's far from being the case, whoever picks their singles is just clearly something of an idiot. I'm one of a few who thinks their second album is at least as good as their debut, but they picked the worst songs on it and released them as singles! Their third album wasn't as good but does still have its high points.

I shall post the top 5 tomorrow, although I'm sure it's reasonably obvious who they all are, at least three of them anyway, the number one is significantly ahead of the other 4.

Seriously? I can't abide Use Somebody.

'Teddy Picker' - #01

'Crying Lightning' - #03

'Cornerstone' - #01

'Dance Little Liar'- #27

'My Propellor' - #23

Weeks on Chart - 121

I adored Arctic Monkeys from when I first listened to them. Their music was a breath of fresh air at the time and they were huge amongst my age group. I'd got into them before most through 'Fake Tales of San Fransisco' which was played on the radio a bit during the summer of 2005. I downloaded some of their other songs and was eagerly anticipating their album. 'I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor' came and I loved it, easily one of the greatest number ones of the previous decade. Although their debut album was fantastic, I was ultimately a little disappointed as I already had 9 of the 13 tracks on it. The second album was also great but I feel their sound developed to peak with album number 3, it was a much more refined sound and it sounded like a natural progression, 'Cornerstone' is probably my favourite single of theirs.

'Spheres' - #13

'Carnal Love' [V] - #37

'Embers' [W] - #23

'Sky Burial' [Y] - #10

'There is Hope Again' [Z] - #31

Ash used to be a favourite of mine, and then after 2004s album I lost any interest in them I had and paid little attention to 5 years worth of material. Then they came up with a concept of releasing a single every fortnight for a year, naming each one after a letter of the alphabet. It was a novel idea and one that I decided to follow, especially after the intoductory 'comeback' single 'Return of White Rabbit'. The project was generally a success, althogh the quality of the songs varied it was well worth following.

I hadn't expected Ash to be anywhere near this high! :o

Although I guess the A-Z project has helped them out massively with the way you've calculated it compared to all the other acts.

  • Author

Well quite, it's a slight disappointment but they're there by default of having had more hits than anyone else, Franz Ferdinand and my #2 have had 13 hits each, there are only two acts who've had more, both of them 18. I think I should've been more selective in what I charted from A-Z, but charted them higher. Three top 10s (including 2 only #10) doesn't really reflect how much I liked it.

Taking all acts that have had 5 chart entries or more, their average points per song position is 108th/143.

'Who's That Girl?' - #02

'Dream On' (ft. Christain Falk) - #02

'The Girl and the Robot' (ft. Royksopp) - #01

'Caesar' (ft. I Blame Coco) - #01

'Dancing On My Own' - #01

'Hang With Me' - #02

'Indestructible' - #06

Weeks on Chart - 148

Well it was obvious she was going to be quite high.... A perfect run of nine straight top 3 singles was ended last month when 'Indestructible' only managed to peak at #06. Four number ones is as many as anyone else has had, and I see no reason why that figure should not increase if she keeps releasing music, or featuring on others. Like many, I first heard Robyn when she released 'With Every Heartbeat'. It took a few weeks but I finally fell in love with it and it went on to become one of my top 5 singles of the previous decade. Whilst nothing else has quite managed to equal 'With Every Heartbeat's brilliance, she's still been responsible for many of the finest pop songs released in recent times.

'I Wouldn't Be Like This If You Were Here' - #01

'Struck Dumb' - #17

'Heartbeat Song' - #09

'I Can Do That' - #19

Weeks on Chart - 139

A deserved second place for the Futureheads, but they're a long way behind the act above and aren't ever likely to overtake. Ever since I heard their cover of Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love' I have loved this band, it's a shame it remains their most successful song when they have so many great tracks of their own, but then it's one of their very best anyway, it's everything a cover should be and easily my favourite cover version of all time. They lost their way a little with their second album but still released a pair of great singles, but they've returned to their best again since, although the single choices off 'The Chaos' weren't great, 'I Can Do That' is probably my least favourite on the album.

A surprise? Maybe. Kanye is not the type of artist represented in this chart so yes it is surprising in that respect. But he's fantastic, he's by far my favourite rapper of all time and consistantly releases great music, either from his own albums or featuring on other people's. When I first started my chart in 2004 he'd never released anything, he's since released five albums and they've all produced at least one top 10 hit. I know that 14 of his 18 songs have a featuring, but he adds to every single one of those, there's no way 'American Boy' or 'Make Her Say' would be the fantastic songs they were without the appearence of Kanye West.

He may be way out infront but it could've been so much more. After the utterly vile 'Stronger' (by far the worst thing he's put his name to) I ignored 'Good Life', I most definitely shouldn't have. I wasn't aware of 'Flashing Lights' existance and I managed to completely ignore 'Run This Town', how I don't know. 'Forever' with Drake is another that I've only heard recently but it's great, four songs I've missed that could easily have been top 20 hits and increased his lead further. His lead will increase though, 'Runway' continues to rack up the weeks on chart, and the current releases of 'H.A.M.' and 'All of the Lights' are set to go top 20/10, and that's before I've heard anything else from his album with Jay-Z. A fully deserving number one.
