So since the Your All Time Favourite Songs/Albums threads and me discovering These Days by Nico (fucking AMAZING) and some other cool stuff (like who'd have thought that Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You is better than Whitney's?!) i've been thinking about slowly getting acquainted with some stuff from 60s/70s/80s/90s. And the problem is i don't even know where to start or to look. HELP NEEDED and would really be appreciated.

Hmm, I have a list of my top 12 singles released before I was born (1989) so I may as well post that!

Beatles 'Strawberry Fields Forever'

Buzzcocks 'Ever Fallen In Love'

Cure 'Boys Don't Cry

Cult 'She Sells Sactuary'

Echo & The Bunnymen 'The Killing Moon'

Joy Division 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'

Knack 'My Sharona'

New Order 'Blue Monday'

Pogues & Kirsty MacColl 'Fairytale of New York'

Run-DMC 'It's Tricky'

Smiths 'This Charming Man'

Who 'My Generation'

IF you're looking at the 60s, then it goes without saying that you should look into the Beatles. My favourite Beatles album is Revolver, which amongst others features Here There And Everywhere (my favourite Beatles song), Taxman, Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows (the song that more or less invented dance music). Also, Pink Moon by Nick Drake is a favourite of mine from the time. From the Morning, with its simplistic lyrics and unconventionally tuned guitar picking, is the highlight of that set.

As for the 90s, I could fill a room with recommendations from the 90s. Of course there's Suede's first 3 albums (Suede, Dog Man Star & Coming Up, the latter being my favourite all-time album), Grand Prix by Teenage Fanclub, Moon Safari by Air, The Bends by Radiohead (I much prefer this to OK Computer), Jollification by The Lightning Seeds (one of the great pop records of the decade), Dummy by Portishead, and Beautiful Freak by Eels. There's plenty more great albums I could give, but that's probably a decent start.

ur welcomeee

but um, i dunno it's a hard place to pick where to start. rolling stone's list is decent but is fairly typical (but chris is right in that a ton of those are must haves). pitchfork's top 100 albums of the 70s / 80s / 90s (and singles of the 60s) are good. i recommend reading it and anything that sounds interesting, plug it into itunes and give it a shot. they leave off a bunch of really great $h!t though. another good way to find things it to plug in a band u luv onto itunes and looking up related artists.

in terms of MUST HAVES though, i could not live without these albums:

talking heads - remain in light

kate bush - the dreaming

fleetwood mac - tusk

joni mitchell - blue

the b-52s - the b-52s

modest mouse - the lonesome crowded west

bjork - homogenic

also get jolene by dolly parton. she's insane. luv her.

it's a lot of just listening to clips and experimenting and youtube-ing and such.

maybe i'll make a playlist or sumthin. or just do another countdown.

It depends on what kind of music you want to investigate.

Personally I would choose something you already like and then branch out from there.

These would be my albums I personally couldn't do without (quite indie heavy):

Dirk Wears White Sox - Adam & the Ants (nothing at all like their hit singles)

Master of Reality - Black Sabbath (if you want something heavy)

Transmissions and Closer - Joy Division

The Undertones 1st album (Genius punk pop)

The Velvet Underground & Nico (which would then lead off into all sorts of stuff)

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Kilimanjaro - The Teardrop Explodes

Ocean Rain or Crocodiles - Echo & the Bunnymen

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or After The Goldrush - Neil Young

Isn't Anything - My Bloody Valentine (I way prefer this to Loveless)

Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman

+ a thousand other records
