Cheers Martin :D

08 (06) Crystal Castles feat. Robert Smith - Not In Love (01-01-02-03-04-06-08) [7 wks] Great chart run 7 weeks inside the top 10, I never get bored of the track

'Not In Love' still sounds great and I can see it hanging around for a while yet. There's definitely a lot of chart life left in this track.

17 (--) Beady Eye - The Roller (17) [1 wk] Its Ok-ish, can be better

I think 'The Roller' is pretty decent for what it is. You just know that if this song had been released by Oasis (ie; the exact same song only crediting Oasis as the artist, it'd be top 10). Again, the Beatles influences in this song seem obvious but that's no bad thing.

It seems Indie is back in the charts, your chart is influenced with Indie music this week :D All it needs is Noah & The Whale. :P

I'm always open minded when it comes to music. If I like what I hear, then it'll do well in my chart. As for Noah & The Whale, that was a genuine :drama: moment. I only realised I'd forgotton about them after posting my chart reading through the iTunes chart. It was too late to go back and re-edit my chart. So Noah & The Whale will enter my chart next week instead.

 The beauty of personal charts, always reflecting exactly how much people love a song at one particular time. 'Rolling In The Deep' is excellent and is definitely going to be one of my hits of 2011. Perhaps Britney Spears will struggle to get to no. 1 after all. I'm also impressed that Adele has managed to go to no. 1 in a few European countries too. Speaking of Stromae, he eventually topped your chart so maybe Adele might follow suit?

04 (--) Chase & Status feat. Liam Bailey - Blind Faith (04) [1 wk] This is SO 90's, especially with the uncredited diva on the chorus

...but this is SO fantastic. :P The second dubstep hit of 2011 that I really think is excellent (following Nero 'Me & You'). This is looking set to stick around for a while in my chart.

10 (--) Tinchy Stryder feat. Melanie Fiona - Let It Rain (10) [1 wk] Strong single from Tinchy, I don't like it enough to go top 20 for me but it's better than his last few certainly

Believe it or not, this is Tinchy's highest charting single for me bettering the #11 peak of 'Never Leave You'. All credit goes to Melanie Fiona who really makes this song with its perfect pop chorus. However, Melanie Fiona also peaked at #10 for me with 'Give It To Me Right'. Her European breakthrough single 'Monday Morning' peaked at no. 15 in my chart.

20 (--) The Vaccines - Post Break Up Sex (20) [1 wk] Surprised they've done so well, seems very 2005 to me, nothing new at all...

It does sound quite "Editors" in places but I think it's a great track. Again, it has one of those catchy choruses I hear one and then have the "post break up seeeexxx" line stuck in my head for minutes. :P

My faves:

40 (31) Tinie Tempah feat. Kelly Rowland - Invincible (20-19-26-31-40) [5 wks]

Great chart, good to see Beady Eye outpeaked The Vaccines :D "Grenade" has grown on me a lot as well.

Cheers MancunianGiraffe :D

So you're not a fan of The Vaccines then? I personally think 'The Roller' is the better song. I've thought 'Grenade' was a great track from the first time I heard it. I can see why it'd be a grower as it's not as instant a song as 'Just The Way You Are' was.

Still no love for Adele? :(

Cheers Richard :D

1. Yep, exactly - I didn't think it would climb any higher a few weeks ago, but I've been listening to it a lot over the past week or so, since getting her album, definitely gave it a boost! Not sure if it will emulate Stromae in getting the #1 as I'm quite loving my current #1 at the moment, and then the Eurovision onslaught has started!

10. His highest peaker for me was Number 1, which got to #3, although I prefer Never Leave You, it peaked at #5 but had a far longer chart run and ended up in my 2009 EOY top 40. His new material has been a little underwhelming in comparison but this song is a step in the right direction.

1. Adele looks like she's going to have a massive 2011. 'Make You Feel My Love' had already been floating around the top 40 like a yo-yo out of control. It probably did help Adele in the long run and if so then I'm glad because 'Rolling In The Deep' is just the perfect pop song. Usually when I rave over a song, it ends up spending weeks at no. 1 for me. Whether Adele manages to achieve this is left to be seen. Also Adele looks like she could have 3 singles in the UK top 40 today. :D

10. I really didn't get the big deal over 'Number 1'. It peaked at no. 23 for me but swiftly left my chart a couple of weeks later. I guess the track was very representative of British music in 2009 (ie; commercialised grime. See 'Oopsie Daisy' by Chipmunk too). 'In My System' got to no. 16 in my chart, I thought it was a fairly decent track actually but again mostly for the female vocalist in the chorus. As long as there's a good chorus, or a killer hook then it's bound to get success to some degree.

01 (01) Adele - Rolling In The Deep (01-01) [2 wks]

My #1 last week too but will the album release be enough to keep it there this week? :drama:

What was Adele's competition last week? Maybe Robyn will get a shock new entry at no. 1 with an album track. :D 'Rolling In The Deep' is excellent so I'm happy it managed to top your chart.

02 (02) Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me (02-02) [2 wks]

As you noticed previously(!), I like the instrumental of this far more than the normal version. :D

I actually made a comment about this in GD's personal chart saying I couldn't imagine myself charting 'Hold It Against Me (Instrumental)' which was why I found it funny to see you charting it. Like previous Britney #2 hits in my chart; 'Gimme More' and 'Womanizer' had excellent production. It was the actually instrumental I was more impressed with than the lyrics/vocals. That said, I do genuinely think 'HIAM' is overall a better song.

03 (03) Bruno Mars - Grenade (01-03-03) [3 wks]

I think this is extremely overrated. I didn't care for his last one but could at least see why it was successful where as this one just bemuses me, I was gutted when it beat Adele last week. :(

Bruno Mars was my artist of 2010. I think he's got a great style to his songwriting skills and has the ability to write a good melody too. Melody is important for me to appreciate a song. If I just hear noise for 3 minutes, I don't know what's there to appreciate about it. I just think "anyone can make noise for 3 minutes ** le sigh ** ". 'Grenade' is the darker "minor chord" sequel to the lighter "major chord" of 'Just The Way You Are'. Or maybe I really am reading too much into this. :D

04 (--) Chase & Status feat. Liam Bailey - Blind Faith (04) [1 wk]

Not actually heard this one...

I honestly couldn't say if you'd like this or not. For me, it's a fantastic dubstep track with a lot of 90s dance influences thrown in for good measure. The bleep sound effect in the verse when Liam sings "i am a man with a heavy heart" sounds very similar to the bleep sounds in The KLF '3am Eternal'. Whether it's been sampled, I don't know.

05 (04) Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette - Hello (01-01-03-04-05) [5 wks]

Ahhhh, your UP entry! This has finally grown on me a bit and will be fighting to enter my chart when I compile it later on.

It's been such a slow burner but I'm glad this track has taken off so well. Looks like 'Hello' may even climb into the UK top 15 today. Will be interesting to see how well 'Hello' does in your chart. Grab that #40 SMASH. :P

06 (05) Nero - Me & You (02-02-05-06) [4 wks]

I think I heard this on the chart show last week but can't really remember how it went...

This is difficult to describe musically. Yes, it's dubstep but there's a sort of rock influence there. It sounds like it's from a computer game which makes the music video all the more apt. Regardless, it's the first brilliant dubstep track of 2011 (with 'Blind Faith' the second). People said dubstep was going to be big this year. If the quality of dubstep tracks are like this throughout the year, then it'll be a great year for dubstep.

07 (07) Diddy-Dirty Money feat. Skylar Grey - Coming Home (07-07) [2 wks]

Not my idea of fun I'm afraid.

 Well, at least it's a good song from Diddy but he owes a lot to Dirty Money and Skylar Grey who make this track with their soulful tones. Gosh, don't I sound like a typical Buzzjacker? Female vocals FTW. :D

08 (06) Crystal Castles feat. Robert Smith - Not In Love (01-01-02-03-04-06-08) [7 wks]

   Still riding high for me.

It was a shame that this failed to crack the UK top 40 but I don't even think there's a music video for 'Not In Love'. These days, a music video seems to be one of the best ways to promote a single. Nonetheless, I agree this is awesome, a well deserved no. 1 in my chart and I don't see this plummeting down my chart anytime soon.

09 (08) Strange Talk - Climbing Walls (05-08-09) [3 wks]

:cheer: I hadn't expected this to do well for you at all, fabulous! It just didn't strike me as a Hits type of track but really glad you approved. ^_^

This was my favourite entry from UP4. It's such a great uplifting rock track with the great use of synths throughout. What's not to like about 'Climbing Walls'? :D All together now; "ohhhhhhhhh oohhhhh ohhhhhhhh ohhhh ohhhhhh, etc...".

10 (--) Tinchy Stryder feat. Melanie Fiona - Let It Rain (10) [1 wk]

Not heard this one either, I don't recall liking any of his previous songs though so I won't hold out any hopes for this...

Well, you probably won't like this either. Or least you might like Melanie Fiona's parts of the song? I even tracklisted Melanie Fiona 'Monday Morning' on my CD SWOP last year that Brett Butler received.

BEST OF THE REST:

16 (--) The Go! Team - Buy Nothing Day (16) [1 wk] (voted for this one... even though I don't think it's as good as some of their previous singles...)

The Go! Team have never really had a massive hit in my chart. They've already scored two top 20 singles for me though:

The Go! Team 'Doing It Right' (peaked at no. 18)

The Go! Team 'Grip Like A Vice' (peaked at no. 16)

So they've actually equalled their previous best peak of #16 once again. I actually didn't even realise that until I just checked my All Time 2004-2010 Database.[/geek]

1. Indeed, and she deserves the success as 21 is a brilliant album! A far cry from Duffy's awful comeback single and average album - how the tables have turned :o I always preferred Duffy in 2008, even though I didn't 'love' either of them, but Adele definitely deserves the bigger success this time around.

10. I liked it a lot, found it very catchy, even though I can't stand N-Dubz. Oopsy Daisy also peaked at #3 in my chart, I guess I'm a sucker for this commercialised grime/female chorus usually, or at least was in 2009  Jodie Connor was the female vocalist on In My System, although uncredited for some reason...she's from your neck of the woods isn't she?

1. Agree 100% Duffy took my chart by storm in 2008 with both 'Mercy' and 'Warwick Avenue' which ended the year as my 2nd and 3rd biggest single respectively (The Killers 'Human' was my no. 1 of 2008 :D ). Yet after the massive success of 'Chasing Pavements' (spent 3 weeks at no. 1 in my chart) all follow up singles made nowhere near as big an impact. 'Cold Shoulder' did get to no. 7 but tailed off quickly whilst 'Make You Feel My Love' peaked at no. 11 - I just didn't see any point in re-entering the song in my chart last year. Duffy's tones have become more and more nasal even since 'Rain On Your Parade' which even then I described as a poor man's 'Mercy' with irritating vocals. Duffy needs to ease off that nasal high pitched tone and start singing the way she used to when 'Rockferry' and 'Mercy' were released (which sounds daft, why change the style of your singing?).

10. I detest N-Dubz with a passion but I was genuinely gobsmacked when I heard 'We Dance On' only to discover it was by N-Dubz. Perhaps a lack of them featuring in the video helped. Just lots of young kids breakdancing instead. It was easily N-Dubz best single and I doubt they'll ever release a song as good as that ever again.

1. I agree, I just don't understand what's happened to her voice? Must be all that Diet Coke she was drinking around the time of Rain On Your Parade :kink: Mercy was a #6 for me, and Warwick Avenue was a long running #3, in comparison Chasing Pavements was a #6 for me and was Adele's only notable hit from 19. So I never 'loved' either of them but somehow found Adele a bit lacking in quality next to Duffy, which seems like a ridiculous opinion to have had looking back  Duffy's new album is just so tacky and cheap sounding, and Adele's is stunning.

10. We Dance On Was great, very much seemed to me like the unofficial sequel to Teenage Life by Daz Sampson with the kiddy choir chorus (which somehow worked) and the rap verses.

1. Oh yeah, the Diet Coke advert. I think that was probably the turning point in Duffy's career. How nasal did she sound singing that song? It's almost as if the production got her to sing the song in a lower key, then they pitched up her voice to sound high pitched and nasally. She is not Alvin & The Chipmunks and should avoid singing like them. I thought 'Rockferry' was a great album - definitely one of my fave albums of 2008. I actually bought 'Rockferry' after 'Warwick Avenue' was released as by that point there were three Duffy singles I'd liked. I'm glad as had I left it until the reissue when 'Rain On Your Parade' was released, that song alone might've put me off buying the album completely. Then again, 'Well, Well, Well' isn't much cop of a song even if Duffy sang it "normal". If a song is average at best, not even a flawless vocal performance can save it.

10. I remember you mentioned this at the time when it charted. I'll always remember 'Teenage Life' for somehow managing to sound better live at Eurovision than it ever did on the studio version. The "kids choir" was far too nasal on the studio version yet sounded better on the night of Eurovision. Such a shame Daz Sampson looked like a right idiot prancing about on stage.

1. I agree, although I was never *that* big on Rockferry. The production was great but apart from on the singles and Distant Dreamer, I wasn't overly won over by the melodies on the other songs. But everything on the album was better than Well Well Well

10. I can't disagree with that  He looked like an utter fool mincing around in that yellow jacket in front of the whole of Europe :drama: Still, I loved the song and even despite his plea of 'vote for the music' at the end of the performance, clearly nobody did :(

1. At least the record company released the best tracks off 'Rockferry' as singles. Well, until the reissue then it went downhill. That's why I was slightly bemused as to why 'Well, Well, Well' was considered strong enough to lead Duffy's second album. Everyone thnks it's a great album but a bad choice of single can do a lot of damage. Going to back to Adele, she's done well to get a second top 40 hit already with 'Someone Like You'.

10. Mincing? Daz was trying to get his swag on acting like a chav. Cringe!!! :D Vote for the music, eh? I'd say people voted for the gimmick (ie; Lordi). I remember the UK even gave Lordi their 12 points in 2006. Well, it was certainly memorable.

1. I agree there. Disagree with those saying her new album is great though, it sounds cheap and her voice is at that same high pitch all the way through - there aren't any obvious hits on it at all. Adele definitely deserves her success, Someone Like You is gorgeous and there are a good 3 or 4 other potential singles on there too!

10. Watch it again, some of the hand movements he did on stage certainly looked like mincing to me  Yep indeed, that was rare for the UK not to vote for either Greece or Turkey as the 12 points, proves that it really got people talking and voting - the song even made the UK top 30 despite being released a month after the contest had finished, imagine if it had been on iTunes straight away or a CD single was available instantly - could have easily gone top ten here! Not that I ever particularly liked the song myself...

1. I've read reviews of albums over the years and they usually tag an artist with the strapline "the difficult second album" where because their debut album was so good, it's difficult for the group to manage an equally strong second album. Record companies are to blame though, they demand so much in a short space of time. Say two years (or even 18 months) to write and record your next album ready for release at a certain time. All the more respect goes to Calvin Harris when he lied about his laptop going missing at Heathrow Airport to get himself a few extra months to work "on a new album" when it just allowed Calvin Harris enough time to tweak the songs he already. If only artists weren't so pressured by their record companie, I'd rather have had Duffy comeback in 2012 if it meant giving her more time to write cracking tracks.

10. Let's reminisce!!! :D

Watching it back now, it seems so much more corny than it did at the time.

1. Completely agree that it was a genius move from Calvin! I laughed when I heard that he'd lied about that :D Shame aside from I'm Not Alone and Flashback I found the rest of the album pretty underwhelming :(

10. I know :drama:

Shame the schoolgirls went slightly out of sync with each other about 10 seconds into the performance on the 'but they don't know' bit :( As for Daz, he just looked absolutely ridiculous looking back. Still LOVED the old-skool (literally :kink:) backdrop imagery with the protractors and rulers!
