May 7, 201114 yr He looks like he's eaten a SpaceHopper in this video...... I was checking Hounds of Love yesterday - Coltrane's thanked in the credits for the album, so he's a long-time friend obviously.....
May 13, 201114 yr After the first listen some of the tracks are absolutely fantastic, some haven't clicked yet. This Woman's Work is excellent, more piano based as is Moments of Pleasure which is even better. Song of Solomon is another brill version. Never Be Mine is definitely better than the original. Deeper Understanding now makes more sense in the context of the album. Everything seems sparser and more stretched out. Seems to be a lot more jamming a la the end of Deeper Understanding. The only track I'm not sure about is Rubberband Girl. Got a Stones shuffle to it, lots of snare and sounds like an upright bass on it. Overall, some fabulous versions here and the whole thing was definitely worth doing.
May 13, 201114 yr err...that was my point...... I'd expect irony to be lost on Americans...but... Coupled with your previous comment about her weight, it doesn't come across as ironic, just catty and bitchy.

May 13, 201114 yr Coupled with your previous comment about her weight, it doesn't come across as ironic, just catty and bitchy. to the stupid, maybe... I was referring to the fact that she ISN'T in the video - so who knows what her weight is? It's Coltrane we see - as the main focus... NOT Bush. Spelt out E A S I L Y enough now? Thank you.
May 16, 201114 yr Author #3 on itunes, not bad seeing as though I imagine a lot of her fans will be older and buying the physical copy! This new version of rubberband girl baffles me though. It's so odd
May 16, 201114 yr I like the new version very much.... although I'm a little worried that the only good tracks on Red Shoes - Top of the City, Moments of Pleasure, Lily and Song of Solomon are the ones she's re-recorded - I just hope they're not as much of a disaster as her re-recording of Wuthering Heights for the Whole Story... and isn't This Woman's Work perfect anyway? There's nothing needs changing with it whatsoever, so I'm a little worried she's done this one. Just finished reading Under The Ivy, a new biography on Kate by Graeme Thomson - a damn good read, very insightful, not schmoozy at all - honest, well-written and incredibly well researched. I've generally found it quite difficult to appriciate a new take on anything that's been a "classic", but I do prefer the new vocal version of Wuthering Heights over the original. The continued singing at the songs end works for me. It's my fave composition of hers and I was familiar with the original version first, which I think is still fab btw. As for Deeper Understanding, I much prefer the original, although the new version's maybe growing on me. However, I picked up a copy of DC today, but then decided to put it back, and I'm undecided yet as to whether I want to buy it. Also undecided whether to buy The Way Back on DVD, having found The Long Walk book hard to put down when I read it a few years ago, but I'm sidetracking, lol.
May 17, 201114 yr I listened to this for the first time earlier today and it seemed quite good on first listen although I agree with the consensus that Rubberband Girl could easily be left off. So pleased that Never Be Mine is on it as it's always been one of my favourites from The Sensual World, the run of This Woman's Work/Moments Of Pleasure/Never Be Mine is just lovely.
May 17, 201114 yr Bush looking to stop Adele's chart run Tuesday May 17, 2011 By Paul Williams Music Week Kate Bush has taken an early lead over Adele in UK artist albums sales this week but, with a deficit of fewer than 3,000 units to make up, the XL signing’s 21 could still make it a 16th week at number one. Bush’s newly-released Director’s Cut, her first issued by the label Fish People via EMI, is aiming to become the singer’s first UK chart-topper since retrospective The Whole Story in 1986. Her last album Aerial peaked at number three in November 2005. The album had sold 17,562 copies up to yesterday compared to 14,645 for Adele’s 21, which is currently one of three XL albums among the top five sellers. It is joined in third place by the newly-issued second Friendly Fires album Pala and 21’s predecessor 19 in fifth place, while the top five sellers is completed by Warner Music Entertainment’s Let Them Talk by Hugh Laurie at number four. The Laurie album debuted at two on last Sunday’s chart.
May 17, 201114 yr I'm really pleased that the track listing is almost exactly as I would have picked it from the two source albums - but I'm not really impressed with the remakes so far. I'll give it time though.
May 17, 201114 yr What shocks me a bit about the album is that, for a notorious perfectionist like Bush, the vocals seem....off. Plus, Flower of the Mountain sounds like she recorded it underwater. On Valium. Whilst eating a boiled sweet. The same as Rubberband Girl. I think, in reality, the sad fact is - it wasn't that the recordings of the originals weren't up to scratch...... I think the songs themselves, well Red Shoes ones anyway, are just not good enough to merit remaking. She's ripped the guts out of This Woman's Work and turned it into a meandering mess - devoid of anything but a feeling that Bush is bored rigid singing it. The fraught desperation of the original, it's gone - replaced by a sparse arrangement that just doesn't work on any level. The huge faux pas on Directors Cut is the remake of Sensual World - it's so bad it's embarrassing - the James Joyce text simply doesn't fit the arrangement (which is exactly the same as the original anyway).... it's toe-curling hearing an artist of this stature clumsily fitting bits of a frankly unreadable book into what is now an unlistenable song. Undoubtedly the worst thing this fine lady has ever ever recorded. The stunningly beautiful Song of Solomon remains almost unchanged bar the vocal - and the addition of some pretty awful "wap bam doo's" which sound like a yelping puppy in a stranglehold. Only Moments of Pleasure sounds better... the choir is a terrific idea that works beautifully...... It pains me to say it, but Director's Cut is shocking..... a completely misguided idea that falls at every hurdle. If only this lady had someone who could suggest to her this really wasn't a very good idea - that when you polish a turd...well... sorry Ms Bush..... it's still a turd..... :(
May 20, 201114 yr Oh dear...... still have not listened to it and after that review I'm not sure if I want to... Still waiting for my LP to arrive in the post ;-)
May 20, 201114 yr Not everybody agrees with russ. I don't. No it's not the best thing that KB has released (not by a long shot) but it's not the unmitigated disaster that's painted above. There are still enough moments of beauty to make this a good listen and a worthwhile project.
