17 - Shakespear's Sister "Stay" (1992) (+60)

 

This song spent eight consecutive weeks at the top spot back in 92', eighteen years later it re-entered the chart after Cher Lloyd off X Factor performed it

 

 

White Town outperformed my expectations by far (I even posted in the 1997 rounds that I was gutted how crap I thought it was doing just from scanning the votes, but evidently I was wrong as it went on to qualify!)... adore it. And thanks to Wiley, even though you murdered it, for perhaps latching some of the younger members on to the song, otherwise maybe it wouldn't have found its way this high on the countdown.

 

Blondie :wub: I have to say it was incredibly difficult to leave it out of my votes. It was one of the last songs I deleted when whittling down my list of 24 (I think!) songs that I decided could have a place in my top 10 :( Love them, and Maria will always have a special place in my heart as the first song I ever heard by them (naturally, given my age). Chuffed it did so well here.

 

The Prodigy at #18... I'd say that's just about the right place for them, actually.

16 - Manic Street Preachers "If You Tolerate This..." (1998) (+61)

 

The first number one for the Manics after being in the charts since Feb 1991 (Motown Junk, number 94). They are a very successful band and are still around today (Postcards of a Young Man, number 54) was their last hit in the charts.

 

 

I wasn't expecting the Manics to get that high- really glad :D

15 - Blur "Beetlebum" (1997) (+63)

 

I'm surprised at the success of this song on BJ. It spent 3 weeks in the top 40 (so wasn't expecting it to be well remembered) and has received a lot of -2 points yet had very high points by some posters. If only "Song 2" went to number one - now that's a better song!

 

 

14 - Coolio feat. LV "Gangsta's Paradise" (1995) (+65)

 

BJ is very anti-rap, so it's good to see this kind of song doing well here. This is Coolio's only number one as the follow up peaked at 9. GP spend 12 weeks in the top 10, including 7 weeks in the top 3, 3 weeks at number 2 and 2 weeks at number one

 

 

U2 - The Fly is the best number 1 of the 90s. Superior to most songs ever recorded.

It's one of my faves too - though I wouldn't give it quite as high praise as you :P I put it 1st in the 1991 round but not many other people gave it big points, sadly!

 

Eiffel, Queen and Oasis out :( although Queen did pretty well considering all the -2's they were given, plus they would've actually done really well without them :o

 

great to see Manics and the other Oasis song still to come- could this probably be the first countdown ever in Buzzjack history that a female doesn't win? :o *crosses fingers*

-2s don't make that much difference in this game though :P At best they might have been 10 places higher, I'd guess. Can't be arsed to go back and work it out.

 

And I think Oasis have a good chance of winning, considering it's quite poppy/anthemic for a rock song. Manics obviously don't as they're out now.

Oh no! I was kinda hoping this would win. Would have been quite funny giving it got this far from like maybe 5 or 6 posters putting it high :D

 

As for Song 2, it might be better in your opinion, but I doubt it would have done as well here, as Beetlebum is much more popular among Blur fans in my experience. Though Song 2 probably would have picked up a lot more casual points - but that wasn't enough to send Country House to the final, so I doubt Song 2 would have made it either!

I'm no Blur fan so I don't know what is more popular out of Blur's singles ... well I do now. This competition has been very varied and not female pop dominant

The second of three Spice Girls songs, will VF reach top ten? This song was their third number one and first Christmas number one

 

 

12 - Sinead O Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990) (+70)

Two songs with "2" in a row, this is Sinead's only top ten hit, and only number one song, spending five weeks at the top.

White Town, Firestarter, Maria, If You Tolerate This, Beetlebum all incredible songs! But i wanted at least few of them to be Top 10! At least Oasis have a chance to be top 10!

 

Surprised that The Verve, Take That and Sinead O'Connor are so high!

I just checked - it got 7. So it would have been 16th with 62 points without them. Of course that isn't taking off any other -2s though from songs directly lower than that, though.

There's only 1 song left that I voted for - The KLF :( So them to win please. Though I wouldn't mind Cher, Britney, Madge (sounds so stereotypical BJ of me here, but those are all brilliant female pop songs!) or Take That. Anything else would be kinda icky in terms of supposedly being the best #1 of the 1990s.

 

Coolio woz robbed. My fave 90s #1 (and in my top five fave #1s ever) and it only comes 14th :( I actually expected slightly better even though it's a dreaded hip hop song, as it's one of the most well-known hip hop songs of all-timeee.

I don't remember that song at all but I remember that video - it's really creepy! As if that video is for a Spice Girls song... :mellow:
