Posted March 31, 201114 yr From Music Week Virgin Books have announced details of the second edition of British Hit Albums to be published later this year. For the first time, separate artists and compilations charts are to be calculated retrospectively. The new edition will use the revised version of the artists chart. A spokesman for Virgin told Music Week “This is an exciting move. For the first time artists will be credited with their lost number one albums. Elvis Costello will now get three weeks at number one with Armed Forces and one week with Get Happy. Dark Side Of The Moon will finally be recognised as a number one album.” A spokesman for the Official Charts Company said “We have waited a long time to be able to do this. It has been a difficult task to find the data to complete the bottom positions in the chart after the compilations have been removed. We are delighted to have been able to do this for the new edition.” Among other changes Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water adds another two weeks to give it 27 weeks in total, the same as Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Stevie Wonder will now be credited with a number one album for Songs In The Key Of Life. The 29 weeks at number one for Various Artists in a 31 week period in 1972 will be expunged from the records giving Don McLean and Cat Stevens a number one album for the first time. Separate artist and compilations albums charts have been compiled since 1989. The last combined chart was topped by Now That’s What I Call Music 13. The number one for that week will now be Kylie - The Album. That album will gain an extra three weeks to give a new total of nine weeks. Do you agree with this decision?
March 31, 201114 yr I think it will be interesting to see- although its not technically the 'official' album chart really
March 31, 201114 yr great idea! ...and now can we re-compile the singles chart to exclude charity singles?!?!
March 31, 201114 yr What is the point of this? Seems like such a waste of time to me. Was anybody really bothered about this? I've certainly never seen it as an issue, nor have I met anybody else who did. Seems very random and pointless to me. Anyway, I certainly don't agree with it. The charts are a historical reference and should show what people were buying within the rules at the time. As the rules meant compilation albums were allowed to chart they should be kept in. Seems perfectly logical to me. Randomly changing the chart rules of decades ago for no reason is bizarre.
April 1, 201114 yr While it might be an interesting intellectual exercise, it will create confusing descrepancies with other reference works, not to mention with the historic charts themselves. For that reason, I think the idea is flawed.
April 1, 201114 yr I smell April Fools! I really can't imagine that any chart compiler would waste any time whatsoever doing this, with a load of data from over 20 years ago - it would have taken them years to compile to find the 'bottom of the chart positions', it would re-write history unnecessarily and about 100 people would buy the book for all their hard work  Like Superbossanova said, charts are a snapshot in time. Why not just pretend Crazy, Chasing Cars and Maneater were never deleted and find their 'lost sales' to recalculate every chart that they featured in across 2006, thus lowering the 'official' peaks of hundreds of songs!
April 1, 201114 yr On reflection, I'm hoping that today's date is relevant to the original article...
April 1, 201114 yr It must be- it would take the combined efforts of Gallup, Millward Brown, OCC, BRMB (or whatever it was) plus record mirror to do this and it just isn't practical- and if it was why wasn't it done years ago? far too much effort for little gain
