I started liking pop music in June 1987 when I heard PSB - It's a Sin. Since then my favourite band changed quite a few times. Here is the series of changes

June '87 - Sept '91 - Pet Shop Boys

Sept '91 - March '93 - Erasure

March '93 - March '94 - REM

March '94 - Nov '94 - Crowded House

Nov '94 - Aug '96 - Suede

Aug 96 - to date - Manic Street Preachers

What are yours?

Now, I developed obsessions with other bands too - New Order, The Cure, Stone Roses, Bloc Party - but none of them were strong enough to prompt a reassessment of who my favourite band was.

Michael Jackson has always been my favourite but he's not a band so..

'94 to date: Pet Shop Boys. It was all about 'Very' in the beginning

'96 to date: Suede, Pulp, Oasis but Blur was, and still is the most important one for me.

'97: The Prodigy. 'Fat of the Land' obviously.

'97: Skunk Anansie.

'98-'00: Marilyn Manson. From 'Mechanical Animals' (groundbreaking) to 'Holy Wood' (amazing)

'98: Beastie Boys. The best white rappers on Earth. Sorry Eminem.

'99: Manics. 'This Is My Truth..' era and I loved 'Know Your Enemy' too

'99: Nine Inch Nails. 'The Fragile'

'00: Coldplay, Turin Brakes

'00-'01: Radiohead. From 'OK' to 'Kid A' and 'Amnesiac'. Of course I still like them but the magic just isn't there

'01 to date: Belle and Sebastian. Love at first listen. I still worship them.

'01: Spiritualized. 'Let It Come Down' blew my mind.

'01 to date: Lambchop. It all started from 'Nixon'. Kurt Wagner is a genius.

'01: The Strokes. 'Is This It' obv.

'02-'04: Mercury Rev. It started from 'All Is Dream' but didn't even buy their latest album.

'02 to date: R.E.M.

'03: Massive Attack. I'm probably the only person on Earth who thinks '100th Window' is their best album

'04: Franz Ferdinand

'05: Interpol, The Magic Numbers.

'05 to date: PMMP (a Finnish band, amazing)

'08 to date: Spoon. A band which will probably go to history as the most underrated indierock band ever.

'10: My Chemical Romance. A band which will probably go to history as the most underrated rock band ever.

'10: The National. 'High Violet' is a masterpiece.

Recent ones: The Smiths (and Morrissey), Pearl Jam, Primal Scream, Garbage, Elbow, The Beautiful South, Supergrass. I've known these bands for long obv but been loving them recently.

Belle and Sebastian and Pet Shop Boys have been the most important ones for me.

Hmm.. such a pointless post in the end because I still like all of them but it's Saturday night :P

EDIT: But 'Those the Brokes' by The Magic Numbers is the most disappointing follow-up album in history of pop.

Hard to date them... but here, in order(ish) are mty favourite bands, excluding solo artists....

ABBA - started off with an obsession with Agnetha... then I realised how fantastic their music was.... forget 90% of the singles and ther Mamma Mia debacle.... and listen to The Visitors...incredible

Blondie - the best band frontwoman of all-time.... beauty, brains and and incredible voice. Hard to pick a fave - but Eat To The Beat, Parallel Lines, Autoamerican - all superb pieces of work.

Soft Cell - criminally only remembered by the masses for their worst single, Soft Cell were a band who got more dark, twisted and fabulous as they went on - The Art of Falling Apart and This Last Night In Sodom are works of genius - and their comeback a few years ago spawned Cruelty Without Beauty - a stellar comeback album.

Yazoo - who could fail to be entranced by the groundbreaking pairing of the bluesy, earthy voice, with the metallic electro backing? 'Winter Kills' remains one of my all-time favourite records... a masterpiece.

Depeche Mode - liked them from Speak and Spell but really loved them from A Broken Frame onwards - too many classics to mention, really, but they're strill Britain's most interesting longterm band - curiously ignored by the Brits...year after year. Disgraceful.

Cocteau Twins - 'Heaven or Las Vegas' is astonishing..... as is Treasure. Elizabeth Fraser has the voice of an angel.... just... beautiful music. I wish they'd do just ONE more album....

Siouxsie and the Banshees - a living icon. 'Peek-a-boo' is my fave of theirs but there's oodles of others I'd take a bullet for. And their version of The Passenger pisses all over Iggy's....

Pet Shop Boys - I think I may be the only fan who thinks Nightlife is their best album..... they've released their fair share of stinkers, but they're still capable of genius...... as proved by 'Numb' and some of the Yes album.

Roxy Music - a latecomer to these, but as soon as I heard the debut album I was hooked. Even the later albums have their moments. And obviously, the best artwork - ever.

The Smiths - a fan from This Charming Man...... the band that revolutionised British music for me. Forget The Beatles and The Stones..... I think The Smiths were a far more influential and important band than either. The Queen is Dead - all-time favourite album, Bigmouth Strikes Again in my top 5 all-time singles.

Massive Attack - coolest band in the universe.... to come back with a career-best like Heligoland last year was great. Again, far too many classics to mention - and they're possibly the most influential band of the past 20 years, I think. They were doing avant garde ambient when Radiohead were making US-rawk albums.

Underworld - again another band remember by most for their most annoying hit single.... I urge anyone who hasn't to buy Dubnobasswithmyheadman, their debut - it's incredible....

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain remains one of my favoutrite albums of all time, they've never ever matched its brilliance, and the last album was horrific, but they're still a hugely influential and innovative band who I'll follow on til they pack it in. Another marvellous frontwoman, too.

Other bands I've loved through the years.... New Order (up to Revenge), Sisters of Mercy, Flying Lizards, Human League, The Cure (up to and including Disintegration), Pink Floyd, Portishead, Mercury Rev, Duran Duran, Visage, The Specials, Squeeze, Eurythmics (early - up til 'Savage'), Japan, The Beatles, Suede, The Doors, Mamas and The Papas, Midlake, This Mortal Coil, Can....... and thousands more :D

Blondie - the best band frontwoman of all-time.... beauty, brains and and incredible voice. Hard to pick a fave - but Eat To The Beat, Parallel Lines, Autoamerican - all superb pieces of work.

Pet Shop Boys - I think I may be the only fan who thinks Nightlife is their best album..... they've released their fair share of stinkers, but they're still capable of genius...... as proved by 'Numb' and some of the Yes album.

Blondie: totally agree. 'Numb': So underrated. Diane Warren + PSB = match made in heaven imo.

Hmm.

Probably

1980-82 Adam & The Ants, Madness, Bowie

1983-84 Ultravox! (John Foxx era), Kraftwerk, Bowie

1985 A-ha (weird I know), Talking Heads, Springsteen, Kate Bush, Bowie

1986-89 The Sisters Of Mercy, Fields Of The Nephilim, Christian Death, Kate Bush, Siouxsie & Banshees, Pixies, R.E.M.

1990-92 Creaming Jesus, Gaye Bykers On Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, Manic Street Preachers, Siouxsie, Prince, The Cramps

1993-94 Manic Street Preachers, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Pulp, Killing Joke, Prince

1995-01 Pulp, Manics, Killing Joke Hole

2002-05 Manics, Killing Joke, Bowie, Libertines, Franz Ferdinand Slipknot

2006-11 Killing Joke, Slipknot, Arcade Fire, The Creepshow, Schoolyard Heroes

There have been others of course but these are the main ones

hA! I think my timeline has been a bit like this - these being the periods over which I was stanning hard for the act. I think Suede, Manics, Radiohead, All Saints, Muse and Girls Aloud were the acts who people who know me automatically associated me with - "oh Andrew* - he's the GA-loon" etc

91-93 Queen & Roxette

93-97 Suede

94-01 Manics

95-98 Pulp

97-99 Radiohead, Spiritualized, David Bowie

97-01 All Saints

98-00 Hefner

98-05 Idlewild

99-06 Muse

00- Britney Spears (although her last good output was the Womanizer single)

02-05 Sugababes

04-09 Girls Aloud

04- Darren Hayes

05- The Knife

07- Dragonette

Womanizer? Jesus.... I am frequently stunned by the support for that atrocity of a song. Does the repetition not annoy you?
The older I get the less I like my music to be anything but simples. And tbh the video had such a gorgeous bloke in it - I must have watched that about a 1000 times so the song got stuck in my head and I love it to bits.

Womanizer is actually a decent song. Listen to Lily Allen's version for evidence.

Hmm, good questions...

1988 - 1990 - Erasure, Adamski, S'Express

1991 - 1993 - KLF, Carter USM, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Prodigy, Altern 8, Levellers, Senseless Things, The Wonder Stuff, Pop Will Eat Itself...

1994 - 1996 - Pulp, Oasis, Blur, Supergrass, Elastica, Therapy?, Stereolab (Britpop Boy Ahoy!)

1996 - 1998 - Super Furry Animals, Spiritualized, Beta Band, Jon Carter, Urusei Yatsura, Bis

1999+ - Honourable mentions to Arctic Monkeys, Holy f***, Errors, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Ringo Deathstarr, Long Blondes plus a few others.

A lot of the bands above I've never stopped loving.

1960's - The Move, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies, The Who, Bob Dylan

1970's - Slade, ELO, Blondie, Kate Bush, Harry Chapin, The Osmonds (the group - not Donny)

1980's - Level 42, Erasure, Ultravox, Squeeze, Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby,

1990's - Apart from a few Oasis songs I find it hard to remember the 1990's (music wise)

2000's - Maroon 5, Take That, Arctic Monkeys, Scouting For Girls, Lily Allen

Obviously those 60's, 70's, 80's acts - I still listen to (especially ELO)

Kath

For all those who had a thing for The Pet Shop Boys - interesting to note that they've agreed to support Take That on their tour this summer both in the UK and Europe.

Depeche Mode - liked them from Speak and Spell but really loved them from A Broken Frame onwards - too many classics to mention, really, but they're strill Britain's most interesting longterm band - curiously ignored by the Brits...year after year. Disgraceful.

Depeche Mode is my favorite band ever. I prefer the period 86-97 when they released their best work.
