Singles

The week of January 18th, 2010 was the last time that the Top 5 singles all held their places, that week Owl City were at No.1 with “Fireflies”, with the rest of the Top 5 consisting of “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha at No.2, “Bad Romance” by Lady GaGa at No.3, “Empire State of Mind” for Jay-Z and Alicia Keys at No.4 and at No.5 was Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say”.

So one year and fourteen weeks later we get another held Top 5 singles, as LMFAO hold for a second week at No.1 with the now UK No.1 single “Party Rock Anthem”, keeping “Sweat” for Snoop Dogg at No.2, “Price Tag” for Jessie J. feat B.o.B at No.3, former No.1 “On the Floor” for Jennifer Lopez and her Pitbull, who is also at No.5 with “Give Me Everything”.

That Jan 18th chart had a big debut at No.7 for Ke$ha’s second single “Blah Blah Blah”, and this week is close to that one, with a big new debut for Lady GaGa at No.6 with the second single from her forthcoming second album, the song is entitled “Judas”. The song was only released for sale on Wednesday, so that is two days worth of downloads for its debut this week.

The Black Eyes Peas fall one place to No.6 with “Just Can’t Get Enough”, and Chris Brown’s “Beautiful People” is down two places to No.10 this week, but with his tour occurring this past weekend; it should/could boost the sales of this single next week. Two songs climb into the Top 10 this week, firstly up seven places to No.8 is Britney Spears with “Till the World Ends”, making it the second Top 10 single from her seventh album “Femme Fatale” (TW-16), and returning to the Top 10 at No.9, and up five places, is Bruno Mars’ “The Lazy Song”, now in its sixth week inside the Top 10.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Rihanna drops one place to No.11 with her former No.1 single “S&M”, but joining that song inside the Top 20 is new single “California King Bed”, which jumps ten places this week to No.18. Also entering the Top 20 is Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, up a couple of places to No.19, and Nicole Scherzinger is up seven places from her debut from last week of No.27 to No.20 this week with “Don’t Hold Your Breath” (sorry ‘bout last week mentioning this was her debut single, I missed her “Baby Love” from a couple of years ago).

The Potbelleez are the highest placed Aussie act this week, as they jump ten places to No.22 with their new dance track “From the Music”, and up one place to a new peak of No.29 is Good Charlotte with “Last Night”. Tinie Tempah’s promo tour again helps his latest single “Invincible” jump up, this week it climbs eleven places to No.38. And entering the Top 50 this week, and up twenty places to No.42, is “Bow Chicka Wow Wow”, now the second T50 entry for Mike Posner, and making it three T50 hit from their latest album “Science and Faith” (TW-50), The Script climb seven places to No.47 with “If You Ever Come Back”.

The two big debuts of the week are from acts that have both had No.1 singles this year, Lady GaGa debuted at No.6, but entering at No.24 with her second single is Wynter Gordon with “Til Death”, her previous No.1 being January’s “Dirty Talk” (TW-39).

Lower Top 50: Selena Gomez and The Scene jump eight places to a new peak of No.65 with their latest single “Who Says”, and up nine places to No.70 is Chris Brown feat Lil’ Wayne and Busta Rhymes with “Look at Me Now”. The third and final new lower peak comes from Neon Trees and their second single “1983”, up nine places to No.76.

Like the upper Top 50, there are only two new entries to the lower 50 this week. First at No.79 is “Mouse in Da House”, which is listed as being by Mousey feat Casey Bennetto. Casey is a Melbourne DJ and rapper, and Mousey is a character that comedian and TV personality Adam Hills initially used as a joke with an audience member, but the fluffy little squeaker has teamed up with producer Molly Meldrum to record this charity single. And as it was also released on Wednesday night, it has only had two days worth of sales.

Sick Puppies first charted in Australia with the No.47 digital charting track “All the Same” (Oct.2006), and made their first ARIA Top 100 entry in January 2007 with their “Sick Puppies (EP)”, which accumulated fifteen weeks inside the Top 100 and peaked at No.65 (No.35 on the Physical Sales Chart). This week they score their second entry by debuting at No.82 this week “Maybe”, a former US No.56 single, which has also made the lower reaches of the New Zealand and Canadian Top 100 charts.

Albums

With the singles chart Top 5 staying still this week, the album chart only had the Top 2 staying in place, as The Foo Fighters spend a second week at No.1 with their latest album “Wasting Light”, and Adele’s “21” spending its second week at No.2. And with the Fooies spending a second week at the top, it breaks the run of one-week-No.1-debuts at the top of the ARIA Album Charts, and brings their total of weeks spent at the top of the ARIA Album charts to TEN, the same amount of weeks accumulated by Live, Dido and Paul McCartney.

The rest of the Top 10 sees Bruno Mars’ “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” rise up two places to No.4, Justin Bieber’s “My Worlds” holding at No.7, Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” down three places to No.8 from its peak of No.5 from last week. k.d. Lang’s “Sing it Loud” drops six places to No.9, and the other Top 10 debut from last week, “When Ronan Met Burt” is down two places to No.10 this week (expect this to maintain a high position over the next couple of weeks as Australia’s Mothers Day is only a couple of weeks away).

Australian native artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu took half-a-year (26 weeks) to climb to a peak of No.3 with his first album “Gurrumul” (peak week Oct 2008), but his second album “Rrakala” (which means ‘a sub-group of people within the Gumatj clan’) debuts first week at No.3, and this past week he appeared on Adam Hills’ tonight show, plus he is currently doing Blues Festivals in Perth and Byron Bay.

The three Top 10 debuts this week are ALL by Australian acts, and coming in at No.5 with his fifth album “Roy” is former Australian Idol winner Damien Leith. This is his fourth Top 5 album, with his fourth set “Remember June” only managing to get to No.25 (Oct 2009), whilst his first two albums went to No.1, his third set “Catch the Wind” spent two weeks at No.2.

It’s been seven years since the last Jebediah album, but this week their fifth album “Kosciuszko” debuts at No.6 becoming their fourth Top 10 album entry, and second highest of their career. Lead single from the album “She’s Like a Comet” re-enters the Top 50 this week at No.49 (HP-47), and their previous chart entries are listed below…

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never – The Remixes” is up to a new peak of No.15, Avril Lavigne re-enters the Top 20 at No.18 (up five) with her fourth album “Goodbye Lullaby” now that the albums second single has gone to radio, and climbing fourteen places to No.33 is “Record Collection” from Mark Ronson.

Debuting at No.25 with their fifth album, and third to chart here, is New York art band TV on the Radio with “Nine Types of Light”. Their Sept 2008 album “Dear Science” debuted and peaked at No.26, whilst their first chart entry here (they’re third album) “Return to Cookie Mountain” made it to No.50 in its first week.

The Gorillaz enter at No.41 with “The Fall”, an album of fifteen tracks that the band recorded during their 2010 American tour. And just a little lower at No.45 is the debut album for local duo The Aston Shuffle, entitled “Seventeen Past Midnight”.

Lower 50: With Mothers Day a couple of weeks away here in Australia, some big releases make entries and strides up the charts this week. In Australia Roy Orbison was on London Records, which was the local distributor arm of his American label Monument Records, and his collection of tracks from the label debuts this week at No.53 entitled “The Monument Singles Collection”. Two debuts from last week jump up the charts, firstly is Paul Simon’s “So Beautiful or So What”, which is up thirty-seven places to No.56 this week, and right behind him at No.57 is the latest for Andre Rieu, “Moonlight Serenade”, which jumps twenty-eight places this week. The only other new lower fifty peak is a re-entry at No.71 for Tinie Tempah’s debut album “Disc-Overy”, which originally hit No.96 back in February of this year, and re-enters due to his recent visit to our shores.
