As you may or not know a lot of time, money and effort went into Madonna's debut album which at the time was called Lucky Star.

Photographed by Edo Bertoglio and designed by Martin Burgoyne. Wheels were in motion, copies were pressed but then Madonna sat with Gary Heery and everything was changed.

Here's what the front and back was intended to look like:

The back side of the Burning Up 12" single even had the album still called Lucky Star.

The final version - simply titled Madonna

In 1985 in europe the album was re-released to cash in on the Madonna mania with the exact same track listing called The First Album

So what is your favourite name for her first album ?

What is your favourite album cover ?

Discuss all...

The one they went with is perfect and still looks great nearly 30 years on!.

I wouldn't of minded the name Lucky Star for them cos I love the song.

The Lucky Star artwork looks really nice but very dated whereas the black and white Madonna artwork still looks cool and fresh today and is way more her. I've got both the original Madonna version and The First Album version on vinyl and they're both pretty cool although the second one looks a bit cheap IMO.
I think they made the right decision changing the name and artwork. The 'Madonna' cover isn't neccesarily her most iconic cover/look, but it's very well known and the Lukcy Star cover is pretty generic/crap.
