New Kids on the Block and Simple Minds are good too. The rest is indeed pretty rubbish. Had to leave out Jive Bunny completely as I honestly have no idea which of their #1s is which... May 22, 201114 yr +15 Black Box “Ride On Time” +12 The Bangles “Eternal Flame” +10 Madonna “Like a Prayer” ^this top 3 are almost equally brilliant, (although the other two probably need my points more than Madonna :P) everything else below is a big step down, dreadful year for number 1s +8 Kylie and Jason “Especially For You” +6 Lisa Stansfield “All Around The World” +5 Soul II Soul “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” +4 Jason Donovan “Sealed With a Kiss” +3 Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers “Swing The Mood” +2 Jason Donovan “Too Many Broken Hearts” +1 Simple Minds “Belfast Child -2 Band Aid II “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”- ruined the simplicity of the original, and sucked all the emotion and soul out of it, making for a terrible cover, even the 2004 version was better! :puke: Edited May 22, 201114 yr by chart wizard

May 22, 201114 yr Not as bad as 1988 but still a disappointing bunch of No.1's. The '88 result could have been worse but still some dubious taste around ;) +15 Black Box “Ride On Time” Has stood the test of time very well +12 Soul II Soul “Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)” +10 Lisa Stansfield “All Around The World” +8 Madonna “Like a Prayer” +6 Simple Minds “Belfast Child” +5 The Bangles “Eternal Flame” Disliked at the time but the abysmal AK cover showed how good the original was, Susanna Hoffs certainly makes it easier to watch +4 Marc Almond feat. Gene Pitney “Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart” +3 Jason Donovan “Too Many Broken Hearts” The guitar playing of Jason in the vid always brings a smile +2 Kylie Minogue “Hand On Your Heart” +1 Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers “Swing The Mood” Gains a point as initially it was good but it all quickly became very tiresome -2 Sonia “You’ll Never Stop Me From Loving You” :puke2: SAW were now really starting to take the proverbial, even worse (just) than the Band Aid II cover

May 23, 201114 yr There is a split devide on the SAW front here; loved and loathed! While I appreciate a majority of their songs were thoraway (and Watermans cash-cow approach to the industry was reflective of Thatcherism), their sound remains massively popular within Hi-NRG/gay circles. It wasn't just Sonia, some Samantha Fox and early Kylie that I'm a sucker for, but their earlier efforts from 84/85 with Divine and Hazell Dean were brilliant! (Big Fun and Jason can sod off though!) May 23, 201114 yr I can't hide my shameless love for late 80's pop... May 23, 201114 yr Their earlier efforts from 84/85 with Divine and Hazell Dean were brilliant! I agree with this, but by 1989 they had a really cynical business model: 1. Get somebody from the soaps 2. Hammer out a basic melody in a major key as an intro and chorus. 3. Add a fairly forgetful benign verse 4. Add middle eight with a pre-determined dance routine or guest 'rapper' 5. Repeat until 1991

Waterman is famous for declaring "I can turn anyone into a pop star" and he did for some years. The wheels on the SAW wagon started to come off by the end of 1990; their last effort were a non-descript girl band called Boy Crazy in late 1991; their single 'Thats What Love Can Do' failed to trouble the top 75 on TWO attempts!
