Hot Chip have backed Arctic Monkeys to win the Nationwide Mercury Prize, even ahead of themselves, also nomimated for the award.

Speaking to MTV, frontman Alexis Taylor said:

"I'm gonna put some money on them!", before adding: "I haven't actually checked our odds yet."

He also revealed his liking for the band, after metting them at the Accelerator festival in Sweden:

"We had a nice time with the Arctic Monkeys in Sweden. We played at a festival called Accelerator over there and they were around and it was very nice.

"We were backstage and there was a nice kind of balcony and the sun setting on the water and Alex (Turner) was there sort of playing his guitar and it was really quite strange. I didn't actually say hello to them, they looked a bit pissed off about being there but they seemed nice."

The 2006 Nationwide Mercury Prize will be revealed on September 5.

I REALLY hope they DON'T get it as it's more likely to damage them as I already said. :( Editors should win imo.

5/2 favourites the Arctic Monkeys are to win on some sites, but it can only be expected seen as they are the most well known band that is up the the award.

Yeah a well known band is usually the early favourite ;) but I think over time Guillemots will gain more support.

I reckon that as well. The Guillemots are a fairly unknown band at the moment but I think their next single will boost their album slaes so they'll get more recignition from the public, although I still hope The Editors win.

I also wouldn't write Muse off myself! It's a great album and some people have been calling it the 'album of the decade' which I wouldn't QUITE agree with but I could see why a lot of people would want it to win and it's certainly good enough to.

I think Muse would be a good bet as well, although I haven't heard the full album its been getting rave reviews, the only thing thats against them is that the Mercury prize normally goes to lesser knwon artists.

Exactly, Infact I thought that was the whole point in it  meanwhile Muse are one of the bigger british bands right now, it usually goes to a band on their first album or an obscure band with a few albums.
Richard Hawley and Guillemots have attracted the most bets by a hell of a long way. Their odds have shortened a lot since the beginning. If either of those were to win I'd be extremely pleased!
