May 31, 201114 yr I'm really glad she isn't beating Britney's record of 1.319 million. Even with it being 99cents on Amazon for two days. :kink:
May 31, 201114 yr We all know that lots can change with the final percentage, but not even half-way to a million when over 2/3 of sales are in? Doubt she'll make it. Last October I think Taylor Swift had gone a bit over 500,000 at about 54%, and then she managed to get a bit over 1,000,000 at 100%

May 31, 201114 yr But there was more hype for 'Oops I Did It Again' than there was for 'Born This Way'. I can assure you.
May 31, 201114 yr Britney got that back when the album sales were sky high.... It would be silly to suggest that it wasn't a big accomplishment, regardless of the sales climate back then. It was still a rarity to sell 1 million+ a week and she was probably just as much a phenomena as GaGa is nowadays.

May 31, 201114 yr Britney got that back when the album sales were sky high.... Um, it's still the highest female debut of all time. And the third highest female debut was from Taylor Swift in 2009. So now the only females to hit 1 million in a week are Britney, Whitney, Taylor, Norah and now Gaga. List of highest first week sales: 1. *NSYNC, No Strings Attached (2000), 2,416,000. 2. *NSYNC, Celebrity (2001), 1,880,000. 3. Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), 1,760,000. 4. Backstreet Boys, Black & Blue (2000), 1,591,000. 5. Eminem, The Eminem Show (2002), 1,322,000. 6. Britney Spears, Oops!...I Did It Again (2000), 1,319,000. 7. The Beatles, 1 (2000), 1,259,000. 8. 50 Cent, The Massacre (2005), 1,141,000. 9. Backstreet Boys, Millennium (1999), 1,134,000. 10. Usher, Confessions (2004), 1,096,000. 11. Garth Brooks, Double Live (1998), 1,085,000. 12. Whitney Houston/Soundtrack, The Bodyguard (1992), 1,061,000. 13. Limp Bizkit, Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), 1,055,000. 14. Taylor Swift, Speak Now (2010), 1,047,000. 15. Norah Jones, Feels Like Home (2004), 1,022,000. 16. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III (2008), 1,006,000. 17. Kanye West, Graduation (2007), 957,000. 18. Pearl Jam, Vs. (1993), 950,000. 19. Garth Brooks, The Hits (1994), 907,000. 20. Garth Brooks, Sevens (1997), 897,000. And also about the hype. There wasn't Facebook, iTunes, Twitter, Farmville, Myspace.....or half the f***ing technology there was now that you could promote your album with. And she sold it for 99 CENTS on Amazon for the first 48 hours of release. Which counts for just under 500,000 copies. The hype in America was unbelievable. There were radio ads I heard promoting it at least every hour or so. Signs on subways, buildings with the album cover plastered over it, a performance on the American Idol finale. They hype was just as big, if not bigger. With that being said, it's still an amazing feat. Edited June 1, 201114 yr by Tyler
May 31, 201114 yr Ah, the days when Limp Bizkit could sell a million in a week. Hold on, what did Linkin Park's "Meteora" do? The follow-up to the biggest-selling studio album of the century, I'd expect well over 800k opening...

Nevertheless both very impressive feat still :)
June 1, 201114 yr GaGa is pretty lucky Amazon was willing to take a $7.11 loss on every $.99 copy of Born This Way they sold (Interscope was paid $8.10 per album) to market its MP3 service because that obviously helped push her over 1 million. Still, Billboard is right to include those sales in the Billboard 200 because there's no way of knowing how many people only bought the album because it was less than a dollar, and how many would have paid full price at another retailer anyway if the Amazon deal hadn't existed.
June 1, 201114 yr It's a really clever market strategy. I tip my hat to her and her team, they did a brilliant job of promoting the record.
