33. Kim Lukas - All I Really Want

Personal chart top 5 run: 2-2-1-1-2-5-OUT-4-OUT-1-5-OUT-4-2-5

The Year 2000 love in is nearly over, just one more song from said year left after this one. Like Ann Lee, Kim Lukas was a British born Europop singer. I first came across this song whilst listening to the radio in Tenerife, I discovered some information about it when I got back to the UK and imported it on single on eBay (my first ever internet purchase, at the age of 12 and when internet shopping wasn't really 'in'). I became absolutely obsessed with it - it's not a complex song but it's oh so catchy, produced by Eiffel 65, you can hear their 'sound' and influence loud and clear on the song. It was a hit across Europe but sadly never made it to the UK which is a shame as it would have been a minor hit at least. I did see an article about her in Smash Hits magazine once, and this video appeared on one of the free videos that they used to give away on the front of the magazine, but that was about as close to stardom as she got here. I also loved the follow up Let It Be The Night but that was about 20 places shy of this top 100.

32. Maria Haukaas Storeng - Hold On Be Strong

Personal chart top 5 run: 5-5-OUT-4-2-2-1-1-1-5

For all of my Eurovision looning, this is actually the 3rd highest Eurovision song on the countdown! Only two left and both are in the top 30! Norway have always done respectively well in the contest, well apart from their record nine last places of course! But in 2008 they were properly back on form. Written by goddess Mira Craig, Hold On Be Strong was a soul pop song which basically fit perfectly into the 'in sound' of the charts across the world at the time, thanks to the likes of Amy Winehouse, Adele, Duffy and the like...this, along with her great draw (last) and her flawless vocal and performance saw Norway claim their rightful position in the top five. The album was more of the same, I termed her 'a happy Duffy' at the time and I still believe that this song and Mine All Mine, if snapped up by Heart and the like, could have been big hits in the UK. Very classy Eurovision song - well aside from a couple of questionable lyrics, but I've mentioned those enough times to not need to ever again!

Two left?! :o I'm assuming Den Vilda's had a bit of a boost along with Satellite then...

31. Jordin Sparks feat Chris Brown - No Air

Personal chart top 5 run: 4-3-OUT-4-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-3-5

Back to back 2008 singles now. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks teamed up with man of the moment Chris Brown to deliver the perfect R&B ballad duet in No Air. I bought Jordin's album in about March or April 2008, certainly whilst I was in the middle of doing my uni dissertations, I remember that much! I liked Tattoo and quite a few of the album tracks but this was the clear standout. Later promoted to full single status, it crept up the UK charts and became a massive and long running hit that was literally never off the radio for about a year. That said, I haven't heard it for a while now...

Actually, thinking about it Norway could've been in with a shot of winning had it been 50:50 in 2008!

No, Den Vilda wasn't quite there but would have been top 150. It's something even more blindingly obvious than that.

Yeah I agree, Russia wouldn't have and I'm not sure that juries would of gone wild for Shady Lady/Secret Combination/Qele Qele. It was rather a close run thing so you could be right. Those constant 7's Maria kept getting in the televote could have easily been 10's and 12's with the jury points added on.

Imagine if they'd won twice in a row! :o

30. Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull - On The Floor

Personal chart top 5 run: 4-1-1-1-2-2-3-4

The best of about six truly essential 2011 tracks thus far for me (though only three made it into this), Jenny from the block returned to little fanfare in 2010 with the awful Louboutins. And that was that...until the popstar turned flopstar roped in the 'talent' that is Pitbull and producer of the moment RedOne to deliver what I believe to be her best single to date, and by some margin. Though helped along by her American Idol judging slot which boosted her profile back up, you don't get one of the worldwide biggest hits of the year just through doing that. A majestic mish mash of the Lambada, Eurodance, the ubiquitous 'club banger' sound and an actually decent input from Pitbull and almost 100 listens later, I can still honestly say that I'm not close to being bored of this song. All popstars in their 40s should take note - THIS is how you do a relevant comeback single.

29. Sarah McLachlan - World On Fire

Personal chart top 5 run: 3-1-2-1-1-1-1-3-2-4-OUT-2-OUT-1-3

In a year that saw excellent comeback albums and a clutch of singles from both Delta Goodrem and The Corrs, it was this #72 SMASH from Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan that topped my end of year chart. I bought the album Afterglow because I loved first single Fallen and was hankering for more. This was the song I fell in love with hardest on the album, it doesn't pretend to be anything extraordinary, it's just an excellent song with a thoughtful message (no doubt Silas will call for her to be run over by a hummer...), great production and a really nice chorus. The video is also excellent - Sophie Muller directed, it really makes you think. Watch it and see what I mean.

28. Missy Higgins - Ten Days

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-1-1-1-1-3-1-3-4-4-4-5

Anybody who knew me on Cool Clarity circa 2005 will know that I had a VERY big obsession with an Australian singer/songwriter called Missy Higgins. I was watching TV one day and this video came onto the music channel B4 (anybody remember that!?!), I absolutely instantly fell in love with it - her unique voice and clear Aussie accent on top of an absolutely gorgeous song - the instrumental part in the middle 8 is truly stunning for me, the mix of piano and string instrument. She never really broke out anywhere other than Australia although her song Where I Stood is the soundtrack to many a US drama I've noticed. Anybody who likes these sort of artists, I really couldn't recommend her debut album The Sound of White any more highly, great memories - great music

27. Gina G - Ooh...Aah Just A Little Bit

Personal chart top 5 run: N/A

This was ALWAYS going to be up there with my favourites, perhaps people forget about it when I run down my favourite Eurovision songs because frankly it's transcended the contest. It's a bonafide 90s classic, sold close to a million copies in the UK and went to #1, you don't do that just from Eurovision fans buying your song. Hailing from Queensland, Australia, Gina Gardiner's Hi-NRG pop track was a breath of fresh air in a contest packed full of (admittedly very good) folk/world music hybrids. Problem was, it was still the 100% jury era and they didn't really go for this sort of thing, so it came 8th. If that's not the biggest injustice ever then I don't know what is. Clearly the UK's greatest entry to date, and a must for any self respecting 90s club night, you don't do 90s without Gina G. Gina had the last laught when she was nominated for a grammy award for this song, not sure that Eimear Quinn was, who indeed!

Delerium - 'Silence' is incredible. One of my all time favourite songs.

26. Anna Abreu - Music Everywhere

Personal chart top 5 run: 2-1-1-2-2-1-1-2-3-4-4

Speaking of transcending a contest, only 3 of my 34 BJSC entries are in this top 100 although two are far higher up, and only coincidentally entries of mine. This however is a song I found on a hunt for an entry and by default then my personal favourite entry of mine and one that I continued to listen to and love long long after the contest. Finnish Idol contestant Anna Abreu had piqued my interest a couple of times before, but only with 'quite good' pop songs. This however was different - an incredibly instant pop song with memorable if questionable lyrics - but it all added to the charm. One of THE best car singalong songs I've ever heard, of all of my entries this REALLY should have won (in my opinon of course!), but second place was its destiny. One of 2009's many great Scandipop songs.

No, Den Vilda wasn't quite there but would have been top 150. It's something even more blindingly obvious than that.

Oooh :kink:

EDIT: OH, thunder stolen.

UK - 6

Australia - 5

Sweden - 3

Ireland - 2

Holland - 2

Colombia - 2

US - 2

Germany - 2

Spain - 1

So homegrown talent is the best then!

Two acts have three songs left! One is obvious, the other perhaps less so.

Two entries from Shakira then  One Lena, two Corrs, Better Off Alone, a couple of Deltas, a Robyn entry and Stay The Night, and of course Set You Free, but beyond that I'm not sure. Bad Romance and Love Song for the USA?

More to the point, where's the Slovakian rock entry? :o

Haha, are there many other Colombian artists I love? :heehee:

Some VERY good guessing going on there!

I haven't got round to that yet I'm afraid, it will be my last hurrah!

Great to see On The Floor and Music Everywhere
I see no Take That yet Rich :( You've not got many spaces left to fit those fifteen in :P
