Posted July 30, 200618 yr Michael Schumacher may have won 7 championships, and could win an 8th this year but is he really the best Formula 1 driver in the last 30 years. Or has he had no serious competition while he has been at the top. If he drove in the 70's or the 80's would he have won so many races, I'm not so sure. Since he started in 1991 his only real competitors have been Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso. But in the late 70's there was Niki Lauda,Nelson Piquet who won 3 and 2 championships respectively. In the 80's there was Alain Prost (4 Championships),Ayrton Senna(3),Nigel Mansell (1). Considering Piquet,Senna,Prost,Lauda and Mansell all raced at the same time, things were a bit more competitive. What do you think.
July 30, 200618 yr I would say Prost He outpointed Senna in 88 but Senna won title because your best 12 results counted only then he won in 89 and took it to the wire in a rancid Ferrari in 1990 that was hard to drive, if the current rules were in place Prost would have 5 titles and Senna 2
July 30, 200618 yr Author Yes, Prost and Senna were great rivals even when they were team mates(in 1988) :o I remember them crashing into each other at Japan in 1989 and again in 1990 on the opening lap, giving Senna the title. Those were the days.
August 2, 200618 yr Ayrton Senna all the way for me, he didn't cheat like M Schumacher. The Hockenheim Grand Prix was good today. Anybody else watch it??? The qualifying was one of the best I've seen for quite a while :D Raikonnen was impressive in both despite falling back but he did well to catch up with Jenson. It's looking like a great season with Michael Schumacher (unfortunately) looking like he's back in the title race again.
