Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

Gotye's third week at No.1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with "Somebody That I Used to Know" is joined at No.1 on the ARIA Albums Chart with its parent album "Making Mirrors". He becomes the second act this year to have claimed both summits, as Adele did it for seven weeks from the end of June, prior to Gotye knocking her off the No.1 spot with her track "Someone like you" which is at No.4 this week.

The last Australian act to occupy both charts was Silverchair back in April of 2007 with “Straight Lines” from the album “Young Modern”, plus Gotye is the 117th act to have achieved this, and only the eighteenth (out of 19 in total, Delta did it twice) local act to have achieved this feat, the first being Daddy Cool back in 1971. Plus Gotye’s only previous chart entry, “Eyes Wide Open” (HP-55, 2008) re-enters this week at No.79, whilst last weeks first-timer “Heart’s a Mess” is still charting, but down at No.99 now.

Five weeks at No.2 for "Moves like Jagger" for Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, now surpassing Christina's four weeks she previously spent there with "Candyman" back in May and July of 2007. Leaping up thirteen places to No.3 is "It Girl", now the fifth Top 5 (and fifth Top 10) single for Jason DeRulo from his seven charting singles. Jason's jump pushes down the rest of last weeks Top 6 by one place each, with "Someone Like You" for Adele at No.4, "Inescapable" for Jessica Mauboy at No.5, "Rolling in the Deep" again for Adele to No.6 and "Super Bass" for Nicki Minaj" is at No.7, whilst holding steady at No.10 is David Guetta and Sia with "Titanium".

Two more tracks climb into the Top 10 this week, with Calvin Harris and Kelis on "Bounce", which is up five places to No.8 and becomes Calvin's first Top 10 single in Australia, whilst it becomes Kelis' third Top 10 entry, but her first this decade, as her previous two made it back in 2004, "Milkshake" (HP-2, Feb) and "Trick Me" (HP-5, July). And up three places to No.9 are Pitbull and Marc Anthony with "Rain Over Me", which becomes Pitbull's seventh Top 10 hit, but it’s the first ever Top 10 appearance for Marc Anthony.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Rihanna climbs a single place to a new peak of No.13 with "Cheers (Drink to that)", whilst Aloe Blacc is up three places to No.16 with "I Need a Dollar". Leaping into the Top 20 are Hot Chelle Rae with "Tonight, Tonight", which is up eleven places to No.18, and matching that rise is Cobra Starship with "You Make Me Feel...", up to No.20 this week.

Lady GaGa leaps thirteen spots to No.21 with her latest track "You and I", after which the next new peaking track is all the way down at No.41, with Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" re-entering the Top 50 at No.41 and right behind that, "Otis" for Jay-Z and Kanye West is up three places to No.42.

Foster the People earn their first Top 50 entry, as "Pumped up Kicks" rises fourteen spots to No.43, and also entering the Top 50 this week is Shannon Noll with "Switch Me On", up to No.45, the Red Hot Chili Peppers leap forty places to No.49 with "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie", and right behind at No.50 (and up eighteen places) is UK boy-band The Wanted with "Glad You Came".

So David Guetta continues to release new material from his upcoming album “Nothing but the Beat” (out this week), and the fourth release comes in at No.37 entitled "Night of Your Life", featuring Jennifer Hudson as guest vocalist. It becomes her first ever Top 50 chart entry, as she has previously charted with only one song; “Spotlight” (HP-96, Sept 2008).

Earlier this year when the film 'Bridesmaids' was released into cinemas, the 1990 hit "Hold On" for Wilson Phillips as performed in the film by them, re-entered at No.51 (July 2011). This week a song from the recently opened film 'Friends with Benefits' starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis enters the chart at No.40, "Closing Time" for Semisonic, a former No.50 hit (peaked 17th August 1998). This effect is also felt at No.75 where "Big Jet Plane" for Angus & Julia Stone re-enters, thanks to Rachel Rafter leaving the TV series 'Packed to the Rafters' (Tuesday 23rd-Aug edition) this past week, where the song was used during her leaving for New York (on the show).

Lower 50: Nero land high on the albums chart this week, and their latest single "Guilt" climbs up fourteen places to No.62 this week. Right behind at No.63, and up nine places, are Good Charlotte with "1979", and the only other new lower peak comes from Flight Facilities, who are up three places to No.87 with "Foreign Language".

Gavin DeGraw is set to release his fifth album soon, and the first single from that new album is entitled "Not Over You", which debuts at No.61 this week, becoming his third Top 100 entry in Australia, his previous two were back in 2004, “I Don’t Want to” (HP-19, Sept) and “Follow Through” (HP-68, Nov). And entering at No.69 is the second chart entry for Joshua Radin, "I Missed You", he first charted in August of 2009 with “I’d Rather Be with you” (HP-91).

Sean Paul teams up with Alexis Jordan on his new track "Got 2 Luv U", which debuts at No.74 this week, and is his twelfth chart appearance, and the first taste from Florence + The Machines second album (due November) is "What the Water Gave Me", which debuts at No.76 this week. Lastly The Potbelleez, score a fourth Top 100 entry from their latest album, as "Midnight Midnight" debuts at No.98.

Albums

Gotye debuts at No.1 with his third album "Making Mirrors", and instantly takes pole position on both main ARIA Charts, as the albums lead single "Somebody That I Used to Know" is at No.1 for a third week. His recently climbing second album "Like Drawing Blood" drops back to No.19 this week, whilst first album "Boardface" falls back little to No.57, but up six places to No.80 is his remix album "Mixed Blood".

“Making Mirrors” is the 633rd No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2011), the tenth No.1 album of 2011, and Gotye becomes only the 17th ‘Solo Male Australian Performer’ to achieve the top spot, the last being Drapht back in April this year. Gotye also becomes the 76th Australian act to achieve a No.1 album, with the 147th album by an Australian artist. Plus it’s the first time that either word ‘Making’ or ‘Mirror’ have appeared in a No.1 album, the closest in the past being Wham! with “Make it Big” (2 weeks, Feb 1985). It also gives his record label Eleven Music their fifth No.1 album, having previously been to No.1 with two Silverchair (2002 & 2007) albums and two from Missy Higgins (2004/5 & 2007).

So after fifteen weeks (so far), Adele's "21" drops back to No.2, whilst she also holds at No.5 with her first alubm "19". Dethonred from No.2, and down to No.6 is "Watch the Throne" for Jay-Z and Kanye West. LMFAO and Lady GaGa drop a place each to No.7 and No.8 respectively, and down five places to No.9 is the Boy & Bear album "Moonfire", whilst Bruno Mars hangs on to the No.10 spot with his "Doo-Wops and Holligans" album, making it now 37 weeks inside the Top 10, matching only one other album to have achieved such a total, “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones (from Sept 2002).

There are three local acts who debut within the Top 5 this week, with Gotye taking the top spot, recent Australia's Got Talent winner Jack Vidgen debuts at No.3 with his first recording “Yes I Am” (and after only three weeks since the show finished too). The third Aussie act is Sydney's Josh Pyke who instantly scores his third Top 4 album by debuting at No.4 with his latest set "Only Sparrows". Josh's first album "Memories & Dust" hit No.4 (March 2007), whilst his second "Chimney's Afire" made it to No.3 (October 2008).

English electro-duo Nero debuted at No.1 on the home countries Album chart, and this week that album "Welcome Reality" enters at No.12 here. And the tenth album for Sydney's punk rock band Frenzal Rhomb debuts a couple of places lower at No.14 entitled “Smoko at the Pet Food Factory”. Their entire ARIA Albums chart history is listed below...
