I hate that Alicia Keys song :( :( It's far from her best and is just so boring, never understood the praise for it really. 'Unthinkable' from the same album was much much better.

A shame to see 'Poker Face' drop so much, it's GaGa's best song imo.

Perhaps proving 2010 was far from being a vintage year, here is the year breakdown of the remaining 25 songs.

2010 - 1

2009 - 2

2008 - 2

2007 - 6

2006 - 0 (highest placed: Who Knew - 29th, 4th in 2006 game)

2005 - 5

2004 - 6

2003 - 1

2002 - 1

2001 - 0 (highest placed: Can't Get You Out Of My Head, 53rd, 1st in 2001 game)

So 2004, 2005 and 2007 somewhat classic years then!

There are still five acts who have more than one entry left. Bizarrely, despite plenty of acts having more than two entries, none of the five have had an appearance in the final yet. They are

Jay-Z (both as featured artists), Britney Spears, The Killers, Robyn and even though they've suffered so many falls, Sugababes!

I shocked about how few entries that certain years still have left especially 2006 and how 2005 has the second most entries left when IMO, it was one of the poorer years in this game.

The latter half of 2007 was probably the best period for music, quality wise, of the decade. So many modern classics all over the place.

Looking at the five from 2005 it's a very varied bunch, which were released from various points of the year. I think it backs up 2005 being when indie/alt was strongest.

Well only one of the 2007 songs left was from the first few months of the year so I suppose, although Umbrella was released in May it was still number one in August so I'm not sure whether you consider that first or second half.

Looking at who will like the top 25 most, both Cremey and Dandy* voted for 18 of them, the most, whilst you voted for the least, just 8.

The first half of 2007 was pretty poor. I actually stopped following music completely from about February to May (although that might have also been in part due to my GCSEs as well and actually trying to be studious for once)! There was almost no good music out that wasn't already from 2006 albums. The second half was a massive improvement and I can see what gooddelta means about the classics thing but I still can't rate the year that highly. It was an average year IMO.

Anyway, I think I have 7 of my top 10 left, unless I missed one that came up, which isn't bad going. I've only lost Trick Me (my #3), Disturbia (#9) and Paper Planes (#10).

I expect my top 2 will fall before the top 15 though, but both have exceeded my expectations already. But I think my #4 (Robyn/Kleerup) has a good chance of winning the whole thing to be honest! What place did it come last year, out of interest? Either way I don't think Bad Romance will win again, due to the natural fall in its second year we've seen with other songs, and maybe some people even putting it lower because of its favourite status. Robyn is the perennial underdog (for now)!

With Every Heartbeat was #7 last year after finishing 5th in the 2007 round, but only stayed behind Umbrella in the final. This year it won the 2007 round from Umbrella by 59 points. Make of that what you will...

25 - 55 Britney Spears 'Everytime' (55-165-16-17-55-25) (257 points)

UK #1

Released as the follow-up to the smash hit Toxic, there was always going to be a large amount of interest in here next single and it followed its predecessor to the top of the chart. As far as the two songs go though they're very far apart, the first an uptempo pop stomper, the follow-up a ballad. She'd strayed into ballad territory before but this was a far better and far more adult go at it compared to previous efforts and seven years on her two 2004 hits are still ranked very highly, it doesn't quite match its peak, but at least climbs 30 places from last year.

I'm really shocked that Rihanna's so low :o although I do actually think they are appropriate positions, certainly not top 10 of the decade worthy imo - fantastic to see Johnny Cash do so well, its a shame he wasn't higher, but I didn't expect to make the top 200 this year let alone top 40!

24 - 97 Franz Ferdinand 'Take Me Out' (37-X-138-154-97-24) (261 points)

UK #3

Considering late 2006 and 2007 is generally considered the time when 'landfill' indie had too much of a presence in the chart, it had taken a long time since indie became successful again to reach the stale stage. Franz Ferdinand narrowly missed the top 40 in late 2003 with Darts of Pleasure and it lead to waves of hype being created for the band and they finished runner up to Keane in the BBCs Sound of 2004 poll. Taking advantage of the traditional January lull for new releases by established acts this became a top 3 hit in January and was the first big hit for an indie band for a while. The likes of The Libertines, The Strokes and Kings of Leon had had decent sized hits in the years previous but nothing overly spectacular. It was this song which really kickstarted the indie wave in the charts, and by the end of the year The Killers, Kasabian, Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs were all having chart hits. Their debut album won that years Mercury Prize and Franz were to come back very quickly with their second, releasing it for Autumn in 2005, but very poor single choices saw it fail somewhat on the back of the success of their debut. I've always said that their second album is stronger but the first two singles from it are also the two worst tracks on it. They've never really hit the big time again and 6 years on from album #2 we're still waiting for album #4. After reaching the final once before it comes back for a second attempt four years later, finishing 13 places higher.

23 - 22 Killers 'Somebody Told Me' (30-14-26-19-22-23) (264 points)

UK #3

Falling just one place from last year the success of Somebody Told Me in this competiton has been remarkable really. As a site it's not particularly indie friendly but this (and the song up next) have always gone against the trend and made the final and finished top 30 in it every year. The singles off The Killers debut album Hot Fuss really were something of a phenomenon in terms of how popular they were, but it took quite a while for that to be realised with the other two. Originally released in 2004 this made #28 but a re-release for this saw it match the peak of Take Me Out exactly one year after, and sent the album to the top of the chart paving the way for it to become a huge seller. No other album spent as long in the chart in the decade either (thanks to Gezza for that one!). Whilst this has remained consistently popular over the years its been overshadowed recently by fellow Hot Fuss single Mr Brightside, which won various Best Single of the 2000s accolades and is a huge catalogue seller. It's also climbed in each of the previous five years in this competition, but more on that later.....

22 - 19 Arctic Monkeys 'I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor' (58-172-07-26-19-22) (272 points)

UK #1

It seems this is the mid-noughties indie section of the final really as Arctic Monkeys follow Franz Ferdinand and The Killers. This is another song which has generally been very popular in this competition with only one poor result in six years. It did make the top 10 in 2008 but has fallen short in the last three years, but still doing very well with only a small dip this year. In 2005 Arctic Monkeys really were a phenomenon. Many people had been listening to them all year, Fake Tales of San Francisco was huge in the summer and generated tonnes of hype, but it was October when this was released that it caused so much hype. To the majority of the public, this song and this band had come from nowhere, to a lot this had come from a long time following generating a huge fanbase through touring, the internet (Myspace in particular) and general word of mouth. I remember on the predecessor to this site there was an argument over whether McFly or Sugababes would be number one, me and about four other people said "Erm neither, it'll be Arctic Monkeys obviously". Most seemed to think it was a joke and refused to believe they had a chance purely because they'd never heard of them, but over the coming months there weren't many people who hadn't heard them. They had the fastest selling debut album of all time and even politicians were told to name check them to appear cool. They've never really matched the success of their debut album, but then they haven't generally tried particularly. They've always been about doing what they want to do, and if other people like them that's great. If not they'll continue anyway.

21 - 09 Sugababes 'About You Now' (24-09-09-21) (275 points)

UK #1

Oh my, a Sugababes song falling! :o Adding to their tally of number ones this was their last (and I imagine safe to assume, final) song to reach the top of the charts and was the debut single from the first album without Mutya Buena in the band. It was one of the more simple songs of their career, but it was also incredibly catchy at the same time and seemed to fit in anywhere, an incredibly radio friendly song that seemed impossible to dislike. It's always done well here, but falls this year from two years at #9. For anyone wondering, Freak Like Me was at its highest ever position last year, at #32....

20 - NE Robyn 'Dancing On My Own' (20) (275 points)

UK #8

Coming to the attention of the public as a teenage sensation in 1998 with top 10 hit Show Me Love she returned to her native Sweden and didn't release anything here for another 9 years when she released self-titled album Robyn. The follow up to that album was last years Body Talk, released in three parts. The first part in early summer was lead by this single Dancing On My Own, and returned Robyn to the top 10, although the song had very little in the way of longevity. The following parts and their singles never really matched the success of this even though she did release a couple of excellent mini-albums making a more consistent final product than her 2007 comeback. She has a large following on this site so it's perhaps no surprise she gets a second top 20 entry and this is ranked as the best song of last year.

19 - 27 Shakira 'Whenever Wherever' (03-12-04-11-27-19) (277 points)

UK #2

After four years finishing inside the top dozen songs, Shakira's first UK hit Whenever Wherever rebounds after falling to a low of #27 last year. Much like her number one single Hips Don't Lie, this had incredible longevity towards the top end of the chart spending 10 weeks inside the top 10, with the first 7 of those being between #2 and #4 but despite being such a consistent seller it was never able to make it to the top with spending each of its top 4 weeks with the debut singles of first Will Young and then Gareth Gates at the top of the chart.

18 - 42 Katy Perry 'Hot N Cold' (88-42-18) (278 points)

UK #4

Considering Katy Perry is a hugely successful global pop artist it's perhaps surprising she's not done better in this competition but Hot N Cold gives her a first top 40 entry this year, climbing 24 places to 18. Although I think it's terrible, it's hard to deny I Kissed A Girl wasn't anything but the perfect song to launch her as an artist, but it was the second single Hot N Cold which established her as a top artist and even with 5 more top 10 hits from last years Teenage Dream album, it's this that has gone on to become the firm favourite of hers, and so far has deservedly continued to climb with every year.

17 - 16 Girls Aloud 'Call The Shots' (30-10-16-17) (279 points)

UK #3

Released in time for Christmas 2007 the girls had developed a pattern of releasing the most popular single from the album second, with something considered to be weaker as lead single, this happened again as Call The Shots followed up Sexy! No No No and has gone on to become the most popular single for Girls Aloud, again finishing as their highest placed song here, falling just one place from last year to #17.

16 - 15 Beyonce ft. Jay-Z 'Crazy in Love' (20-17-29-24-15-16) (283 points)

UK #1

Another song with a remarkably consistent run, having only once (just) made the top 15 but never been outside the top 30. She'd released a couple of songs as a solo artist including another with Jay-Z, but it was this in the summer of 2003 that properly launched her and became a smash hit that seemed to be loved by everyone. It truly crossed over to fans of all genres of music and was one of the party anthems of the decade. She's hit number one a further five times since that and even though she's unlikely to get another one with her current era, there's nothing to suggest she won't reach the summit of the chart again, unless she decides to retire in Motherhood.
