EMI boss presses for singles rule shake-up

Source: Music Week

EMI chairman and CEO Tony Wadsworth used the platform of his company’s autumn conference to press for all qualification restrictions to be lifted for digital releases in the combined singles chart.

Wadsworth hit out at present rules, which bar digital sales counting towards the chart until a week before an equivalent physical release becomes available, by calling at yesterday’s event for a chart to reflect everything the public is buying.

“If it doesn’t it will cease to be relevant to the public and the media and we’ll lose out. It needs to reflect all sales – physical and digital, including download videos,†he told the event at London’s Mermaid Theatre. “Let’s make our chart relevant and that’s a plea to everyone who has a voice in the charts.â€

The BPI has already backed such a move, although there are continuing reservations from some high street retailers, wary of what impact it could have on the already rapidly-declining physical singles business.

The conference included a preview of All Saints’ debut Parlophone single Rock Steady, supported by an appearance by the four members of the group, and the first screening of the video of Robbie Williams’ next single Lovelight. There was also a sneak listen of some of the music from the new Beatles album Love – the soundtrack of their Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show – while live performers included Lily Allen, Badly Drawn Boy, Richard Hawley, Jamelia, Seth Lakeman and Keith Urban.

By the time Intensive Care came out I had heard all the songs and played them to death. So when the CD actually landed on my doorstep there wasn't anything to get excited about. I said at that time that I wasn't going to listen to any of the songs on Robbie's new album until I got the actual CD.

Wonder if I'm going to manage this till the 23rd of October?
