IT was a night of nerves and excitement for U2's Larry Mullen Jr as he officially became a film star.

The red carpet was rolled out in Dublin's IFI cinema last night for the opening of 'The Man On The Train', which features the musician in his acting debut.

A host of well-known faces turned out to support Mullen, including Ali Hewson and band mate The Edge.

Mullen told the Irish Independent of his joy in sharing the experience with his family and friends.

"I'm delighted to see it finally get released in Ireland – it's been two years coming," he said. "I'm just so excited to see it, for everyone here to see it and for everyone to be here with me."

Mullen posed for the cameras ahead of the screening with his partner of 30 years, Ann Acheson – an associate producer on the movie – co-star Kate O'Toole (daughter of actor Peter O'Toole) and the movie's director Mary McGuckian.

Ali Hewson said she couldn't wait to see Mullen in action, adding: "I'm really excited for him."

The wife of Bono, who is currently abroad, was accompanied by Guggi and Gavin Friday, who described Mullen as "a professional who excels at everything he does".

The Edge said: "It's really lovely to support my mate."

Also in attendance were Harry Crosby, John Rocha and his wife Odette, 'The Butcher Boy' screenwriter Patrick McCabe, designer Peter O'Brien and singer Shane MacGowan.

An English-language remake of Patrice Leconte's award-winning French film of the same name, the 'The Man on the Train' co-stars Donald Sutherland.

Mullen plays the role of a mysterious criminal who descends upon a small town planning to knock off the local bank. However, when he encounters a retired poetry professor (Sutherland), his plans take an unlikely turn.

The production was filmed in Ontario, Canada.
