From Music Week

It's the gig they said would never happen, but it looks as though the original line-up of the Stone Roses WILL tour the UK next year.

The Sun is reporting as fact that a press conference is due from the group on Tuesday in London next week, in which Ian Brown, John Squire, Alan 'Reni' Wren and Gary 'Mani' Mountfield will confirm the news.

The story follows an earlier rumour from Clash Magazine that a "renowned producer" has convinced the group's long-warring factions - singer Brown and guitarist Squire - to agree to a reunion.

Inspiral Carpets founder and Stone Roses friend Clint Boon Tweeted in April: "It's true that Ian & John met recently. It was at Mani's mum's funeral. We all went back to a pub in Failsworth. Ian & John got on great."

Happy Monday frontman Shaun Ryder said at the time: "I think [a reunion will] happen, I really do. There is more of a chance now than ever of them getting back together. Ian's just split with his missus and I bet she's hit him for a few quid.

"The only reason they will get back together is if Ian needs the cash. He never has before, he's a millionaire."

The Stone Roses 1989 debut LP is widely regarded as one of the greatest British albums of all time.

The band split in 1996, a year after the release of their follow-up album, The Second Coming.

Omfg I wanna go. Although it's not THE one in terms of bands that said they'd never reform, that won't happen unless Morrissey cheers up.

OMG!!!

If this happens and I get a ticket I will be very happy...

not sure i actually care really. just a bit surprising maybe?
I don't get the hype around this on social media.. They have ten great songs and that's pretty much it and I bet they won't play Ian's solo material.

How old are you? I think you must have had to have been around at the time to know how important The Roses were.

They won't need to play any of Ian's stuff not when they can play Fool's Gold and Resurrection. Then add in the whole of the first album, Sally Cinnamon, Elephant Stone, Ten Storey Love Song, Love Spreads and you have pretty much got a brill set. Shame Ian sounds much like a wounded buffalo at times live. Still I haven't seen him live for nigh on 10 years so maybe his vocals have improved.

What...? This is actually confirmed... Even though Mani was pretty bloody insistent a little while back that it wasn't gonna happen and that we should all forget about it...?
Yep, it's confirmed. 29 and 30 June at Manchester Heaton Park, then supposedly a world tour. Though I'm a bit unclear as to exactly where they are hoping to sell tickets elsewhere in the world.
I have to say I never understood the hype around these guys. A handful of decent singles and a few brilliant ones always made me feel they were overrated. And they were awful live when I saw them in '88 which from what I can gather was not uncommon for them. That said they were important in the breakthrough of Indie music into the charts and inspirational to many.

Ian is still awful live. I saw him at RockNess two years ago and he was as tuneless as ever. But the novelty of the full line-up being there and the fact that the other three should still be really hot musicians would make up for it.

As for SKOB's thoughts that they only had 10 good songs - by which I take it you mean the debut album - you're being incredibly naive. That doesn't even include two of the band's best songs in Elephant Stone and Fools Gold (the other in my top 3 is She Bangs the Drums). Plus many of their B-sides around this time were very strong and well loved as this band came from an era where fans did bother to flip the records over and listen to them.

I wasn't that bothered about them when I was younger. Too young in '89 for the revolution, and too into the likes of Carter USM, Ned's Atomic Dustbin et al that came afterwards.

I forgot to mention the b-sides (especially Mersey Paradise) and the One Love single. I was 20 when The Stone Roses was released and it remains my favourite album ever (and that was before I bought the re-issue on CD to save my vinyl copy, which adds Fool's Gold and Elephant Stone to an already immaculate album.)

I still think The Second Coming is really under-rated. I was listening to it in the car and I love songs like Tightrope and Driving South. 10 Storey Love Song is f***ing ace.

Begging You and Love Spreads are also excellent.

Their debut album is near perfect.
