What's this year's top-selling number 5? It doesn't appear to have sold enough to make the YTD top 40... Same goes for the top-selling number 7... Make You Feel My Love perhaps?

Wiz Khalifa's B&Y is the highest seller to have peaked at #5 in 2011 : #47, ~316k

Could I have the total sales for the following please:

Beyoncé:

'Run the World (Girls)'

'Countdown'

'Love on Top'

Katy Perry:

'California Gurls'

'Firework'

'The One That Got Away'

~725.5k

* The usual proviso about unknown cherry-picked sales while not charting.

Could you clarify?

By 'top 40', do you mean YTD sales for only those songs in the current week's top 40 singles?

Easy enough to do, but what would be the point? The whole idea of YTD's is to show the post popular songs of the year, rather than just those currently popular - that's what the weekly T40's are for... :)

No. I mean YTD if you only include sales of a single when it was in the Top 40. When it leaves sales are not counted any more - ie trickle sales.

Has "set fire to the rain" broken the record for biggest seller not to make the top10 yet?

It's main competition is Numb/Encore - so whatever that sold is the target.

Ah, I see what you mean now.

Well, if I temporarily zapped all my sales data below #40, I dare say I could do that, though I'm not sure *why* you'd want to know that.

OK - YTD singles with *only* T40 sales counting :

Thanks. Will do.

To answer your question about why I would want to remove sales from below number 40 - I suppose I'm trying to emulate what it would be like if a track wasn't available after it left the Top 40 - sort of like years ago when they would stop being pressed and shipped at a certain point.

It's main competition is Numb/Encore - so whatever that sold is the target.

out of curiousity, what song currently holds the record then?

  • Author
Number/Encore hold the record - as far as I know

And before anyone asks the obvious question - no, I don't have a clue what it has sold...

Edited by vidcapper

I think he means the top selling totals for songs that have peaked at every position in the top 40. So i mean the top selling #1, top selling #2 etc all the way down to #40. That would be interesting to see.

Well I was wrong, but can you do this anyway vidcapper? It'd be interesting to see the top selling #28 peaking single of the year, for instance. :D

I think "I'm Yours" overtook "Numb / Encore", but I know they're both miles over 400k.

That chart is quite interesting, kind of an old-style chart where singles get deleted so don't trickle sell as much, and newer songs can break in more easily. Might actually be a good indicator of overall popularity as it puts long runners (often those which weren't held back) at a disadvantage, and consequently makes it a level playing field with held-back releases which have also lost sales due to people illegally downloading or waiting for the album.

Can you provide sales for Leona Lewis/Avicii - Collide? Thanks
 I cant believe Jessie J is nearing a million with that generic nursery rhyme.

Sorry, I don't have the time to do an analysis that intricate.

I find all this nostalgia about the days of physical singles ironic, since they are presumably the same people who, in deserting the format in favour of downloads, effectively killed it. ;)

I never said I wanted physical singles back, the download as a format puts power firmly in the hands of the consumer which I'm very much in favour of. I was just noting that the effect I described has been absent since downloads became dominant.

Could I get the sales of:

Kelly Clarkson ~ MKIA

RHCP ~ The Adventures Of Raindance Maggie

Foster The People ~ PUK

If you've any indication of where MKIA and PUK are in the ytd,I'd like to know their placings too!

Thanks in advance!
