Indeed. No proceeds whatsoever made from the sale of Smells Like Teen Spirit next week will go to the Rhythmix charity, the campaign is supporting the charity, which means that you can donate if you wish as a separate optional extra along with downloading the song, but I do wonder just how many people will actually do that. And the record company are even capitalising on the hype by re-releasing it physically!

It's fascinating reading some of the comments on the Military Wives Facebook page e.g. 'X Factor have no chance so the Nirvana campaigners are battling an inoffensive charity song in a display of supreme chart bullying & arrogance reminiscent of the X Factor itself'. The problem here I suppose is that when the Nirvana campaign was started, it was obviously presumed that as with every other year since 2005, it would be the only other viable option for xmas #1. However we're now at the stage where there's another more likely option and the Nirvana group are actually going to be battling Military Wives - a song where the proceeds DO go directly to charity without having to donate separately.

In 2009 Rage were campaigning against being controlled and urging the public to do something about it and win back the power. Fast forward two years and the public HAVE won back the power, X Factor are not the most likely xmas #1 contender and we finally have a song that could get there on its own merits, but there's a campaign to fight off first! It's no longer X Factor that are the biggest problem in a normal song getting the xmas #1, it's these bloody engineered campaigns every year! The very thing that the Rage group campaigned against in 2009 was the annoyance of having X Factor unwittingly forced upon us every year. So why can't they see that having a campaign now running every year and thus blocking the chances of other unaffiliated contenders is JUST as annoying as X Factor dominating every year. Once was enough, it worked, it's done, X Factor no longer release on xmas week so let's move on.

Eh? Surfin' Bird existed a long time before Family Guy - I assumed people had chosen it because it's a damn good song, and one that people don't readily have a copy of.

Is there really anyone out there who still needs a copy of Smells Like Teen Spirit? It was a pretty rotten choice if you ask me.

As for the money being donated to charity? Somehow I can't really see Courtney Love turning up anywhere with a big cheque...unless it's got her name on it.

So you're suggesting it's a massive lie and no money is going to Rhythmix whatsoever? I think not.

And with regards to "Surfin' Bird", I'm well aware it existed before Family Guy but I also know that the vast majority of people on my Facebook who joined the group last year saw it as a joke and didn't bother to download it. Hence why it had about a 10% conversion rate.

So it's not the only alternative any more? "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is effectively being given an online marketing campaign in the same way that "Cannonball" and "Wherever You Are" have been given a multi-platform marketing campaign in the last few weeks. No one is forcing you to buy the song. In future, in light of other contenders being a viable Christmas #1, it may be advisable for these campaigns to go with "*insert song* for Christmas #1" rather than selling themselves on the fact it's trying to beat the X Factor. If in 2012 it's a popular enough campaign, and there's no other big contender, it might work again. Who knows.

I thought the reason why the X Factor single was a week early its because Wembley arena was booked up for this weekend, surely next year, they get it right

Next year the X Factor will (sadly) become less relevant, have less ratings and in the end, get lower sales for the charity (this might not even go to #1 next year) and winners singles - so something tells me they won't get Xmas #1 next year (or this year) I like TXF as a show, but the people who come out of it (Olly Murs, One Direction, JLS, Cher Lloyd) aren't releasing good singles atm so maybe this is why people are uninterested

Friday Update

1-5 Military Wives Choir

11-2 Little Mix

20-1 Nirvana

40-1 Damien Rice

50-1 Bar

Just more of the same really, more money for Military Wives Choir sees Little Mix drift slightly, with also people realising Damien Rice has no chance meaning his odds as 4th favourite are drifting as well.

Sorry if I never replied to an earlier question re "Bar" - it's a betting term meaning effectively the minimum odds for anything not quoted above. Other odds can often be well above the "Bar" figure, but it's often a convenient point for splitting the field between those who have some sort of chance and others who have very little chance to win.

That doesn't bode well for the Voice when it starts on BBC1 next March

Why doesn't it? The Voice is a completely different show.

Mind you the Voice is shiny and new probably do better. I just think maybe people are tired of all these music reality series, just have to wait and see.

I think The Voice could do well, it's got a fresh panel (with Jessie J and will.i.am  ) and it's from the BBC - which means no ad breaks :yahoo:

Remember Fame Academy? I don't see The Voice doing much better

Jessie J and Will I Am....... Jesus weep, two people that can easily make me hurl.

Someone mentioned something being released on 7" vinyl...... Is the Nirvana? (crosses fingers it is)

Don't know much about it, but I haven't seen any interviews with Courtney Love, Krist Novoselic etc. about charity - and I seem to remember Zack and Tom doing so by this point in 2009. If it's only a suggestion to donate to Rhythmix while you're downloading then why not just stick a few quid to Rhythmix and not bother downloading the song which you already have?

Heh, I've got one from the first time around.

You could just as easily donate to Help For Heroes than buy "Wherever You Are" though?

Thy could have easily used their own studio for the final if they wanted it that weekend.

Or, even better, do neither and donate your money to a better charity :D

Agreed!

Tell you why (& some will scream at me for this):

Back before 1960, we had National Service in the UK, yep? So, every man had to go into the services (excluding those with health problems & those with flat feet).

These days, you joined the Services of your own free will. If you have to fight or go on to the Front Line & are afraid of what will happen...Then you shouldn't join up!

Simon Cowell's a shrewd businessman and he can see that the appeal of the winner's singles are getting less and less. Combined with the bad press that he always gets for trying to ensure that the winner gets the xmas #1, it all adds up to me to suggest that it was no mistake that the single ended up being a week earlier than usual. I don't think he ever intended to go directly for the xmas #1 this year. At least releasing the week before xmas a debut #1 is guaranteed for the winner, which is far better press than a debut #2!

So you're suggesting it's a massive lie and no money is going to Rhythmix whatsoever? I think not.

Money is definitely going to Rhythmix, but only if people donate to it independently of buying the single. The Facebook page shows (if you click the 'donate to Rhythmix' tab on the left hand side) that £730 has been donated so far. Unless it becomes otherwise confirmed though, no proceeds from the sales of the single or download will go to the charity. Of course £730 is better than nothing but it's not the same style of charity support as the Military Wives single where proceeds go directly to Help For Heroes, in the Nirvana case separate donations have to be made. Hopefully Nirvana's label (Universal?) or the living band members will announce in the coming days that xmas week profits from Smells Like Teen Spirit will go to Rhythmix as Rage did in 2009.
