To start with, as it's the 10th year anniversary of my End of Year chart, here's a look back at previous years!

2002

03 Jimmy Eat World 'The Middle'

02 The Streets 'Weak Become Heroes'

01

As I entered my teenage years my interest for music with guitars in it, and like everyone my age NuMetal and Pop-punk played quite a significant part in that, Jimmy Eat World were as good an act as any making that type of music and even though I'd grown out of that type of music fairly quickly 'The Middle' proves it's an excellent song to stand the test of time as I still love it today. The Streets were pretty much the first hip-hop type of act I really had any time for and 'Weak Become Heroes' remains their best song, that piano that loops over and over. 'There Goes The Fear' was number one for Doves though and it's certainly one of the best singles of the previous decade. A top 3 I could easily still choose today!

2003

03 Hot Hot Heat 'Bandages'

02 The Libertines 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun'

01

2003 was the first time that the same act made my two favourite singles of the year, as Pete Doherty's Libertines took the top 2 spots. Their debut album was a huge favourite of mine and still is, whatever people's opinions of him/them it was a revolutionary album that did inspire a generation, myself included. Forgotten Americans Hot Hot Heat made up the top 3 with 'Bandages', a great song they never came close to matching.

2004

03 Jet 'Are You Gonna Be My Girl?'

02 Killers 'Mr Brightside'

01

2004 was the first time I started using music forums and the internet to discover music but these three bands were the acts I loved most during the year. Two songs that have gone down as modern day classics and one from a band that failed to fulfill what potential they did have.

2005

03 White Stripes 'Blue Orchid'

02 Arcade Fire 'Rebellion (Lies)'

01

I still feel the top 2 are the right songs but are definitely the wrong way around, although 'Hounds of Love' still remains in my top 3 greatest cover versions of all time, to joined by two songs which also made my end of year top 3. Arcade Fire were a band that grew in stature but nothing has ever quite managed to beat 'Rebellion'. 'Blue Orchid' is the first song to appear so far that I don't have anywhere near the affection for I used to have. I still think it's great, but not that worthy.

2006

03 Peter, Bjorn & John 'Young Folks'

02 Jose Gonzalez 'Heartbeats'

01

Probably the top 3 I'm least satisfied with. Looking back at 2006 it had two clear standout songs (Pull Shapes and Young Folks) but they only managed to end the year #3 & #4. The beautiful cover of 'Heartbeats' and the criminally under-rated Stellastarr* are both excellent but in retrospect should be a tad lower.

2007

03 The Shins 'Turn On Me'

02 Interpol 'The Heinrich Maneuver'

01

Three songs all released in the same period of the year as they knocked each other off the top of my personal chart. It suggests how good Interpol can be when a song that's not in their top 3 can deservedly be in an end of year top 3, The Shins indie-pop at its finest 'Turn On Me' still jointly holds the record for longest stay at number one in my Personal Chart and Robyn's 'With Every Heartbeat' has gone on to become my favourite number one single of all time.

2008

03 Camille 'Money Note'

02 M83 'Kim & Jessie'

01 Elbow 'One Day Like This'

Possibly the most varied top 3 so far, Camille's extravagant Money Note joined by fellow French act M83 and the Greatest Song of All Time , the incredibly special 'One Day Like This' from Elbow. This is the top 3 I probably love the most, each record so utterly joyous, fabulous and different.

2009

03 The Temper Trap 'Sweet Disposition'

02 Animal Collective 'My Girls'

01

The second time an act have held both positions in my top 2, this time being Maryland's Animal Collective, with the two standout singles from album of the year 'Merriweather Post Pavilion'. They're joined by Aussie band The Temper Trap, whose 'Sweet Disposition' was a song that kept growing on me for months, and ended up being a slow burning hit.

2010

03 Crystal Castles ft. Robert Smith 'Not In Love'

02 The National 'Conversation 16'

01

Probably a number one I got wrong, but on the basis of 'Not In Love' being too recent at the end of the year, than 'Telephone' being undeserving. By far the most pop a song in my top 3 has ever been, a song which I absolutely adore and think is the perfect pop song. The much different, much darker National join them with the beautiful 'Conversation 16', whilst over the past 12 months 'Not In Love' has gone on to be the song I consider the greatest from last year.

Ooh I LOVE The Henrich Maneuver'. I blow so hot and cold on Interpol, but that track still wows me, and the video along with it.

And very hard to argue if you'd just tied the Animal Collective songs that year - they were basically inseparable in greatness. 2005 may be your best year in terms of variability not impeding greatness...

Very much looking forward to this, your album chart ended up being topped by albums I only knew the singles from so I didn't really feel qualified to comment on it!

Kicking off with the first 5 with Howling Bells, who make their first top 100 appearance in 5 years with the rather lovely 'Into The Sky', there's some well known acts in here too as Rihanna and Calvin here with their UK number one, the second best of the year. Kanye & Jay Z's initial collaboration was something that grew throughout the year and is something I like far more than anything else I've heard from their 'Watch The Throne' album. Both Fixers and Elbow get their first of three top 100 entries.

*Still on chart

101 James Blake And Bon Iver 'Fall Creek Boys Choir'

Love / like those. This is shaping up to be quite good

I predict a top five made up EXCLUSIVELY of cover versions of Total Eclipse of the Heart

I imagine that two of the songs that made my end-of year top 10 will also make your end-of year top 10 (Buy Nothing Day and Norgaard). On the NI front, I'm hoping that Cashier No.9 and The Wonder Villains feature (although much more likely the former than the latter).

Nice to see Fixers make your list. They were the first band to retweet me when I started the blog, so they will forever have a place in my heart.

Rihanna is low never expected that, I should imagine the Cults Abducted or Go Outside will feature somewhere in the top 10 here when finished :D

Three acts getting their debut top 100 entries here along with two stalwarts from the past couple of years. Joe Goddard of Hot Chip released his debut single 'Gabriel' with vocals from Valentina at the end of the summer, full of synths it's better than anything his band have released in a while, it grew on me exceptionally quickly but I went off it a bit reasonably quickly too. Indie pop band This Many Boyfriends material I've found to be overall quite underwhelming apart from single Young Lovers Go Pop! which is three minutes of wonderful fun, it's a massive shame that their guitarist Peter Sykes passed away in September after a brain hemorrhage, so young. :(

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have been one of my favourite acts of the last few years and rack up a 6th entry in a short space of time, a 7th will come later, but I've never felt 'Belong', as good as it is, to be one of their finer moments. Lady Gaga was a breath of fresh air two years ago and the 'Monster' part of 'The Fame' really was pop at its finest, but I've found everything off her second album to be largely underwhelming apart from the lead single 'Born This Way', though it's still not as good as many previous efforts. Sweden's Strange Talk also get their first entry with another delightful slice of indie pop, unfortunately nothing else I've heard by them has been anywhere near as good.

lmfao so low :o

There's a time and a place for 'Party Rock Anthem', it's great at what it does but it's not exactly brilliant, and not generally the type of thing I'd listen to, as you can probably guess from looking at the rest! :P

I don't think I've even HEARD five versions of that song!

(thank God!)

Well there are four songs from your top 10 that are in my top 100, so there is a chance. The four songs that have made it, are the four that I've heard! I shall at least please you with one half of the NI bands, and you care correct, I've not heard anything more by the Wonder Villains.

Fixers are great, I've enjoyed everything they've put out so far although it seems that each thing they release isn't quite as good as the last.

The Heinrich Maneuver is brilliant, I do agree after their first album Interpol have been a bit hit and miss, Heinrich Maneuver and Pioneer To The Falls are two brilliant songs from that album.

No worries, I shall hope you can comment more on this one! :D

Rihanna is low never expected that, I should imagine the Cults Abducted or Go Outside will feature somewhere in the top 10 here when finished :D

Did you? I'm not sure what would've made you think would be that much higher. Cults are still to come but:

The Wonder Villains released a single in October, Zola, and they've got another single to be released in February, Ferrari. They've also just recorded a session for Radio 1 with Huw Stephens, so hopefully they'll be up to great things next year.

Great to see This Many Boyfriends make your list as well. A great song.

5 songs which had fairly similar chart runs in my Personal chart here, one of the standouts from Lykke Li's 2nd album in 'I Follow Rivers', one of the few from it I've continued to like a lot throughout the year, the first entry for Metronomy, Example with my favourite number one single of the year proving what a terrible year it's been for number one singles, there's also an entry for the under-rated Warpaint, whose 2010 self-titled debut wasn't an album I discovered until this year along with January release 'Shadows', it's an excellent album, a shame it never caught on. USA indie folk duo Wye Oak round off this set of 5 with what is by far the best song I've heard from them, 'Civilian'.

Four acts make the top 100 for the first time here, and for each of them it's a solitary entry this year. Noel Gallagher has previously had three entries as part of Oasis but makes his first solo appearance with the best Gallagher Brother single of the year 'AKA... What A Life'. 'Amor Fati' was a song which I somehow managed to only chart for 5 weeks, it somehow managed to never climb up my chart even though I've always thought it was rather good. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs may have a stupid name but their music is quite good, and their recent phone advert single 'Garden' is the best I've heard so far. Ponytail are another Baltimore group along with Animal Collective and Wye Oak who've been mentioned in here already, their use of experimental sounds isn't too dissimilar to Animal Collective and at their best they can be on top form, 'Easy Peasy' is one of those moments. They're all joined by Bombay Bicycle Club who's second single from their 'A Different Kind of Fix' album 'Lights Out, Words Gone' makes #83, making this the 3rd year in a row they've made my top 100. Featuring singer Lucy Rose on backing vocals, both still have songs to come.
