Double A- Side (they were the days)

So how does that work for sales then...just award both songs?

  • Author
Yes it's the sales for the package they aren't split
I think that Band Aid is the 80s total I'm sure- I have 3,502,000 sales for it in the 80s leaving 148,000 unaccounted for (downloads)

In that case the other 2 versions have been totally ignored, surely they would have been top 10 at least, on their own.

Anyhow just realised the time, I'm off.

Yeah band aid 20 would have been no5/6!!

Mud and Johnny Mathis sold bucketloads of their singles didnt they!!

Why is East 17 listed in this. It isn't actualy a christmas song. It was just released at Christmas time...
Indeed theres loads of others i would demand to be in there now theyve opened a can of worms by adding East 17 - i would love Gary Jules to be in there, one of my fav xmas hits - it would be around no20 or so!!
I think Stay Another Day has just BECOME a Christmas song for some reason, it does get bopsted back up iTunes around Christmas (it's currently #81 in the official chart and was #96 last week). I don't get it either. I don't see how Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love is a Christmas song either.

The video is the nativity and the lyrics:

Feels like fire

I'm so in love with you

Dreams are like angels

They keep bad at bay-bad at bay

Love is the light

Scaring darkness away-yeah

I'm so in love with you

Purge the soul

Make love your goal

[1]-The power of love

A force from above

Cleaning my soul

Flame on burn desire

Love with tongues of fire

Purge the soul

Make love your goal

I don't think "The Power Of Love" was conceived as a Christmas song, it was just the timing of the release and as mentioned above, the video that seems to allow it to be categorised this. I just think of it as the follow up to "Two Tribes" and the song that allowed them to become just the second act to have their first three singles hit number one.

And also even though people keep saying about missing out 2 Band Aid versions, they have done the same with Harry Belafonte's version of Mary's Boy Child, which I think is a million seller in itself

I think they've just used the biggest selling version of each song to avoid repetition in the TV show- Another OCC mish mash of Info- why do the lists they always do end up posing more questions than they answer?!

There's no one quite like Grandma should not be classed as a Christmas song.

If Bionic Santa is in the list then where is Renta Santa ?

What about Make a daft noise for Christmas by The Goodies ?

The OCC worked on the List in September. Well, one of their Staff did so.

As with all such Lists he, (& maybe others), made the final decision as to

what was to go in it. (Channel 5 have definitely excluded some Hits, that

were in The OCC List - on the grounds that the Chart contained more than

one version of those Songs).

1) It is not meant to be a Christmas Themed Songs List. It is meant to

reflect the Singles that sold the most over the Christmas period, in the UK.

2) I saw the initial List, & it did have Band Aid 20 in it - with 1,154,821 Sales.

It also had Band Aid II in it - 425,908 sales.

3) Halleujah, by Alexandra Burke, was in the initial List - 1,222,079 Sales.

4) In the List that I saw, White Christmas, by Bing Crosby, was in 4th place,

with 1,461,843 Sales. The Total in the List has had almost 472,000 of those Sales

removed.

5) Harry Belafonte's Mary's Boy Child, was in too - 1,182,621 Sales.

6) It even had Killing In The Name, by Rage Against The Machine, in it

- 713,240 Sales.

7) As far as I know, they did include 1981 Sales for the St Winifred's School Choir, Hit.

It was only the 20th Best Seller of 1980 - in the Year End Chart that included the entire

Year. Super Trouper, by ABBA, was 4th, & I believe that sold 709,000 in 1980. The ABBA

Hit then sold only 31,000 more in 1981, even though it did this, in January 1981:,

5 - 8 - 28 - 48 - 71. That's because Sales were very low in January 1981.

The St. Winifred's School Choir Hit, can't have sold much more than the ABBA Hit, in

January 1981. It did this - 1 - 6 - 22 - 58 - 70. Maybe 45,000 to 55,000 Sales?

8) As regards the other 2 Band Aid Hits, & Harry Belafonte, not being in the List

- it looks like a Channel 5 decision, to me. They obviously did not want to show

the same Song, more than once. So, they chose to show/include only the versions

that are the most well known. That's the Boney M, Mary's Boy Child, & the original

Band Aid's, Do They Know It's Christmas?, from 1984. (In other words, it is not The OCC's

decision, that the other versions were excluded from the Channel 5 Chart).

So, The OCC were not ignoring those Hits - Channel 5 were.

9) Stay Another Day, got 768,444 Sales, in the List, I saw. Rounded up to 770,000.

The OCC clearly have 2 'Sets' of 1994 - 1996 Sales, in their Files, & the Guy who

did the Chart looked at the lower Totals for the East 17 Hit. (I know him, so I

will ask him about it, in January).

10) I was not aware that MW's Alan Jones had declared Fairytale Of New York

a UK Million Seller. I do know that The OCC added up its Annual Totals for

1987/1988, (No.2 Hit), & 1991/1992, (No.36 Hit), & then they added in

Downloads from 2004 to 2010. This gave a Total of 815,000 - not including

its December 2011 Sales, of course.

I don't think that Fairytale Of New York has sold a Million. It would have had to

suddenly gain 180,000 Sales, that it never had before. Unless it is supposed to

have got them in December 2011.....

I don't see how those lyrics are Christmassy at all?

I don't think "The Power Of Love" was conceived as a Christmas song, it was just the timing of the release and as mentioned above, the video that seems to allow it to be categorised this. I just think of it as the follow up to "Two Tribes" and the song that allowed them to become just the second act to have their first three singles hit number one.

It was no1 in early december and the christmas top 3 in 1984 was

1) Band Aid

2)Wham

3) Frankie

Think they tried to widen their re\ord buying market for the time of year by doing a seasonal ballad (a bit like Syco does each november by getting 1D and JLS to release a ballad). Technically you could be religious and say Jesus' birth was about love or something. The East 17 one was simply a seasonal ballad too that sounds christmassy in a strange way.I would put Gary Jules and Ellie Goulding in there in the same way. What about Winter Winds by Mumford and Sons - i would put that in - its lyric fit well and its sold around 100k now!!

I thought it was a good countdown overall with Martin Talbot speaking. I think we could use the countdown as a basis for most of the songs and update things with the popular download songs.

In 20 years the chart will look much different - old classics like Let it Snow, Rockin around the christmas tree and Chestnuts roasting will all climb and the novelty record will eventually fall away.

Could anyone use this and add the dload figures since 2005 to get more offical stats? Mariah as someone on here said is on 893k (not sure if thats up to this week or before xmas)and the pogues according to Alan Jones are over a million!!

This is on on the 29th dec on ch5 if anyone missed it, good show!

Spot the ones not included or missed shall we?!
