It saddens me to see that no one seems to be playing Olly out in America...it's Columbia's fault really for messing about with 'Heart Skips A Beat' and throwing Shitty Bang - sorry, Chiddy Bang - on instead of Rizzle Kicks!

Or, has it occured that Olly's music, much like Robbie williams isn't just that US-radio friendly? Actually in that song, I don't think it would've made any diff. who rapped on it as the rap is so inconsequential. I'm actually still surprised that the song was even given a US push, much less entering the iTunes 200. If anything, they should go with "dance with me tonite" and service that to AAA radio (kind of present him as a 20s something Michael Buble).

Gotta say I agree with that last point. The trouble is not with what he's doing - he's been doing all the radio circuit and TV slots during the day, and Z100 in New York have really got behind it - but Columbia throwing him on that One Direction tour is almost like they wanna dumb him down and make him into the 6th member. Which of course, if they saw the kind of crowds he plays to back here - he does the festivals as well as the more standard pop shows and his own tours and he has a far broader appeal than 1D could ever hope for and will probably never get once America sees beyond the hype of them - would make them look extremely silly. I agree that if he was being marketed more at the audience of his equivalents like Michael Buble, Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz, even John Mayer (that's his name, isn't it? I'm not going mad?) it'd make more sense. TBH they've got precious little right about launching him there thus far but I think that's because Olly is so much more his own artist. One Direction are just puppets.

Or perhaps 1D are just far more marketable to the US?
I think Olly could have more broader appeal overall (he seems more adult), but I think giving him the support slot on One Direction's tour was a great move and 'Heart Skips A Beat' might not have got as high as it did had he not done it (though of course we have no way of knowing). From personal experience with people I know, I think there's a lot of crossover between their fanbases, I know a fair few people who've been to see One Direction on tour and also been to see Olly and they do both come from The X Factor afterall with a similar marketing stratedgy.

The impact date for 'Heart Skips A Beat' isn't until July 10. Maybe radio will start to play the song after the impact date.

Boy, Wanted and 1D are taking their own sweet time with their 2nd singles! ;)

Anyone know how Ed Sheeran "A Team", Reb ferguson "NRBL" and Emeli Sande's "Next to me" are doing?

I don't really know what some of that means but they're mainly increasing in audience impressions it seems so they're going in the right direction.

What is the TripleA format? I've always wondered, but I can't quite work out what it is.

Do you think alternative stations in the US would play Ed Sheeran?

Also, anybody know how much airplay Mercy by Kanye West is getting now?

Adult Contemporary... the smae channels that play Buble, Celine dion, etc.

Agree. But the problem probably was introducing him to that format directly. So now they "break" his name via 1D, and then he goes off on his own into AAA territory. Being a foreigner in the US, what I've constantly noticed in the US moreso than in any other country is the constant need to pigeonhole artists into a certain format. Olly might suffer the same issues Robbie Williams facd whilst they tried to break him in the States (he was considered too pop for rock stations, too rock for pop stations). For the std AAA listener, he looks a bit 'young' and 'naive'. Yet, for the pop stations, he's not "cool dude" material but can come across as looking a bit dorky for the avg. American Joe. I really like his music though, and I like him so I hope he does well!

This is why I dislike some of America's attitude to music, where everything has to be slotted into neat little boxes and being one set thing. It's funny because I was reading an interview a week ago now with Ana Matronic from Scissor Sisters, and the interviewer asked her why America hadn't accepted them as we have here in the UK, and she said: 'The plain and simple fact of it is that in the UK, eccentricity and being different is something that is celebrated. In America it's something to be feared.' And she's absolutely right.

Olly's first two albums traverse so many different styles of music that he's never just one thing or the other, he's admitted himself he doesn't like being 'pigeon-holed' as you said. 'Heart Skips A Beat' has more of a 90's dance vibe to it, 'Dance With Me Tonight' is just mad in terms of it's production and style, and 'Please Don't Let Me Go' and 'Thinking Of Me' obviously have a bit more of a Madness-y/Lily Allen feel to them. And I'm sure his third album later in the year will again have something new to offer.

I guess you can't change the majority's attitude towards something - hence why Columbia seem to think throwing Chiddy Bang on 'Heart Skips A Beat' is the answer - but it's sad especially when, running the fansite I run, Olly Murs Daily, I've spoken to so many American fans over the last year - some who found out about him way before the 1D tour came into the equation - who love how different he is and who love the singles and stuff he's had out back home. Everyone always says how personable he is - and I know this too having met him a few times - and the majority of the press out there are positive about him so far so hopefully that and his approach to things will speak for itself. Cos' he deserves it.

Wha? But the single's been out there since the end of May, I don't understand? And what good is letting radio stations play it from 10th July for if he's not back in the US until mid-September to do promo for the album?

Ah okay. Thanks. :D I thought that was what HAC was though.

Haven't heard of HAC. But for the most part, A+, AC and AAA are used interchangeably.
