Chart Track Commentary

 

Carly Rae Jepsen climbs four places from No5 to No1 with ‘Call Me Maybe’, seizing the Singles Chart crown from Gotye who slips to No2 after six weeks at the top with ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (feat. Kimbra). She’s the first Canadian artist to top this chart since Avril Lavigne in 2007 with ‘Girlfriend’.

 

David Guetta & Sia continue to yo-yo in the Top 10, back from No8 to a new peak No3 this week after an incredible 30 weeks in the Top 50 with 'Titanium'. The highest new entry of the week is at No6 for Katy Perry with her twelfth Irish hit ‘Part Of Me’ - of the previous eleven, seven made the Top 3. Jedward re-enter the Top 10 at No8 with ‘Waterline’ which debuted at No5 three weeks ago and now gets a new lease of life with the release of the CD version (accounting for 84% of their sales this week). Labrinth has the next new entry at No17 with ‘Last Time’, his third appearance in the Top 20 following ‘Frisky’ and ‘Earthquake’ (both with Tinie Tempah) which reached No3 and No12 respectively.

 

It’s all quiet on the Album Chart front this week, with the Top 4 unchanged from last week and no newcomers to the Top 10: Bruce Springsteen remains at No1, the Chieftains are at No2, Emeli Sandé is at No3 and Adele is at No4. This week’s highest new entry is at No14 for The Shins with their fourth album ‘Port Of Morrow’, five years after their previous release ‘Wincing The Night Away’ debuted at No8. The only other new entry in the Top 20 is for Paul Weller who lands at No18 with his eleventh solo studio release ‘Sonik Kicks’. Of his six most recent (from 2000 onwards), all have debuted in the Top 20 except for the 2005 independently-released ‘All Is Now’ which came in at No24, and his highest solo spot to-date is No5 for 2004’s ‘Studio 150’.

Not totally surprised to see that Part Of Me has been, well, a bit of a flop.

 

AND great to see 212 has finally cracked the top 50 :D Hope it can continue the momentum.

I know what you mean. Surprisingly I'm not that bad at it. I would only do it with long Song names though like Gotye STIUTK or a long album name like Arctic Monkeys WPSIATWIN.

Chart Track Commentary

 

‘MDNA’, Madonna’s twelfth studio album, lands at No 1 on this week’s album chart, giving the world’s best-selling female artist of all time a third consecutive No 1 in Ireland, following ‘Hard Candy’ in 2008 and the compilation ‘Celebration’ in 2009. In the process she deposes fellow American legend Bruce Springsteen, whose ‘Wrecking Ball’ drops to No 4.

 

A resurgent David Guetta sees ‘Nothing But The Beat’ return to the Top 3 at No 2 more than six months after its original release last summer, followed at No 3 by Dublin hip hop trio The Original Rudeboys with their debut album ‘This Life’. Katy Perry leaps from No 30 to No 10 with the release of the special Complete Confection edition of her ‘Teenage Dream’ album, which debuted at No 1 on release back in August 2010. This week’s other high climber in the upper echelons is ‘El Camino’ by The Black Keys, up fifteen places from No 29 to No 14. The album was released before Christmas, since when it has spent most of its life in the Top 30 and has garnered much critical acclaim.

 

Carly Rae Jepsen takes a second week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Call Me Maybe’, well ahead of the chasing pack: Nicki Minaj at No 2 with ‘Starships’, Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ at No 3 and David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’ at No 4. Fun claim this week’s highest new entry at No 10 with ‘We Are Young’ (feat. Janelle Monae) while Justin Bieber enters at No11 with ‘Boyfriend’ – still chasing a second Irish Top 10 single to follow ‘Baby’ which reached No 7 in March 2010. Nine years after his first Irish hit single ‘Get Busy’, Sean Paul jumps from No 36 to No 12 with his ninth Top 20 hit ‘She Doesn’t Mind’.

Yeah it's an odd one having been released about a month ahead of the UK. And a bizarre chart run too, having entered at 83, then dropping out before returning at no 5!
