Posted January 23, 201213 yr Thanks to the 33 people that voted this year, up from the 29 last year! I shall count down the top 40 over the next four days and then post the full list. Points ties have been split by highest score. Here was last years top 10: 1 Crystal Castles ft Robert Smith 'Not in Love' 570 2 Arcade Fire 'Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) 477 3 Beach House 'Norway' 413 4 Caribou 'Odessa' 396 5 Arcade Fire 'We Used To Wait' 379 6 Arcade Fire 'Ready to Start' 376 7 Arcade Fire 'The Suburbs' 372 8 Gorillaz 'On Melancholy Hill' 366 9 The Naked and Famous 'Young Blood' 347 10 The Drums 'Let's Go Surfing' 326 Feel free to speculate on what you expect to come up this year? Will there be a runaway winner and #2 again? Will BuzzJack follow indie predictability and name a Midnight City and Holocene top 2? Will any act dominate the top 10 like Arcade Fire did last year? Bon Iver, M83 and Lana Del Rey are all well loved and had at least three tracks nominated. I have hidden the voting topic so no one can have a sneaky look! There were more voters this year and they voted for more songs, so points are a lot higher this time around, with songs receiving over 400 points missing the top 10.
January 23, 201213 yr I'll be surprised at anything but a Holocene and Midnight City top 2. Lana for a not top 10 SHOCKER and Jamie xx for top 5 please.
January 23, 201213 yr Author To start with though I shall post what is the WORST prediction anyone has made! I'm expecting Ben Howard to finish quite high on this 93rd - Ben Howard 'Keep Your Head Up' - 88 points (3 voters) A vocal fanbase perhaps, but unfortunately it's just large scores from me and Dandy and a middling one from Tony.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 40 - The Go! Team 'Buy Nothing Day' - 207 points (8 voters) Nominated by: Brett-Butler fQ4f_lgdYz8 Top 10 positions: Brett-Butler, RabbitFurCoat (2nd), Doctor Blind (8th) Going right back to the very beginning of the year, the final few days of 2010 infact and The Go! Team launched their third album with 'Buy Nothing Day', a joyous slice of feelgood pop with vocals provided by Beth from Best Coast.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 39 - The Joy Formidable 'Whirring' - 208 points (7 voters) Nominated by: RabbitFurCoat t3-ZnxO3rU8 Top 10 positions: Alin (3rd), RabbitFurCoat (5th), Richie (8th) Originally released in 2009 when The Joy Formidable were first getting themselves known, the full length (and by far the best) 7 minute version of 'Whirring' was on the album and it was released as a single with Radio 1 backing in the Spring.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 38 - Friendly Fires 'Hawaiian Air' - 214 points (11 voters) Nominated by: Jester 65_cgr4PJFk Top voter: RabbitFurCoat (11th) After their 2008 self-titled debut their second album was one which was much anticipated, especially amongst certain posters on BuzzJack. Some felt it was a step in the right direction and a better album whilst others thought the quality was a marked step down from their debut. The second single 'Hawaiian Air' is generally seen as a standout on it though and just makes the top 40.
January 23, 201213 yr I think we may see a few Bon Iver tracks in the top10, though nothing of Arcade Fire'ish proportions. Other thanthat I think Somebody That I Used to Know will end in at least top10, despite not being mentioned a single time in this subforum prior to the voting.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 37 - Marina & The Diamonds 'Fear & Loathing' - 217 points (9 voters) Nominated by: Grebo 9txg0XicoJ0 Top 10 positions: AaronTM (3rd), RandomFurlong (4th) After 2010s 'The Family Jewels' didn't perform as well as it was expected to or as well as an album of that sound and quality probably should've, Marina was fairly quick to get more music to us as 'Fear & Loathing' emerged in the first half of 2011. It wasn't a single, more as something to keep her profile around. It will feature on her forthcoming second album along with the far inferior single 'Radioactive'.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 36 - Neon Indian 'Polish Girl' - 220 points (13 voters) Nominated by: Harve b0Q_JwOqko4 Top 10 positions: Harve (6th), West (8th), RandomFurlong (10th) Taken from their third album in as many years, 'Era Extraña', 'Polish Girl' was the lead single from it, released late in the summer.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 35 - Hooray For Earth 'No Love' - 220 points (12 voters) Nominated by: Dandy* alfLGvA5PRQ Top 10 positions: 152Chris (3rd), Dandy* (8th), Doctor Blind (9th) This was one of a handful of nominated songs which sent to our Unknown Pleasures competition at some point during 2011. It finished the year as the 6th best track from the competition from the four contests of the year, so if voting is similar here we'll still be seeing Karl X Johan, Other Lives and Foster The People.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 34 - The Weeknd 'High For This' - 223 points (10 voters) Nominated by: Tonyttt31 J7bcJEmFazc Top 10 positions: Cremey (1st), Tonyttt31 (2nd) Releasing three separate mixtapes at various points throughout last year, The Weeknd ended the year as one of the biggest alternative acts around. This was from the first of his mixtapes 'House of Balloons'.
January 23, 201213 yr Polish Girl and High For This are brilliant  Not expecting many of my favourites very high up but I do hope a few make an appearance!
January 23, 201213 yr I think I may have changed the name of the topic by accident :( My computer froze up as I was clicking on it and it went crazy, I'M SORRY I changed it back to what I think was the original title...
January 23, 201213 yr Author 33 - Metronomy 'The Bay' - 232 points (11 voters) Nominated by: 152Chris 9PnOG67flRA&ob Top 10 positions: Cremey (6th), 152Chris (8th) Their Mercury nominated 'The English Riviera' album was something many on here loved over the last 12 months so it's no surprise to see them in the top 40. I'm surprised that 'The Look' wasn't one of their two songs nominated as I thought that was regarded as the album's standout, but maybe I'm confusing my own opinion for everyone elses too!
January 23, 201213 yr Author I think I may have changed the name of the topic by accident :( My computer froze up as I was clicking on it and it went crazy, I'M SORRY I changed it back to what I think was the original title... No worries. I can't remember exactly what it was but if it wasn't this it was definitely something very similar.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 32 - The Rapture 'How Deep Is Your Love?' - 233 points (10 voters) Nominated by: ▲▲▲ jTIKffFPFv0 Top 10 positions: 152 Chris (5th), ▲▲▲, SKOB (6th) It has been 5 years since we'd heard from The Rapture, their last album 'Pieces of the People We Love' being released back in 2006, 'How Deep Is Your Love?' was the song used to launch the new one back in August. It's a grower, certainly.
January 23, 201213 yr Author 31 - Wu Lyf 'We Bros' - 235 points (10 voters) Nominated by: 152Chris 5HGgni1nGGY Top 10 positions: ▲▲▲ (1st), Doctor Blind (6th), 152Chris (7th), Dandy* (10th) The band whose USP was being so mysterious, not revealing who they were or anything about them until the summer release of their debut album 'Go Tell Fire To The Mountain'. It got them a lot of attention but they've not looked like breaking through properly just yet. The 6 1/2 minute long 'We Bros' is certainly one of the highlights of their album.
January 23, 201213 yr Aside Arcade Fire overload, some great choices last year. Not In Love and Odessa were among my faves too. Not knowing anything below 40 is such a nice move. Anything can pop out, although M83 victory must be sure. Still Life to join them in the top 3 and Bjork and Active Child (Call Me Tonight) for Top 10!
