Meryl won. With one of the worst films of her career.

CONGRATS ETC.

But she didn't win for the film. She won for the performance.

At least Octavia Spencer won. :(

If we're talking about 'overhyped' performances let's talk about Ryan Gosling in Drive! The way his character was written (ie. barely speaking, and waiting 30 seconds to respond to anybody) gave the film such a pretentious feel. It wasn't really 'meaningful' or even that emotional beyond Carey's performance. I found Ryan's character actively annoying in fact. He was great in certain scenes (the elevator, anything with Carey) but otherwise it wasn't all that.

Tilda gave a great performance though. But then she was passed over for I Am Love as well and that was wonderful.

Totally disagree with your assessment of Ryan Gosling and Drive.. I refer you to 70s films such as The Driver or Vanishing Point which is basically what Drive was kind of riffing on, or maybe you should watch Nicolas Winding Refn's previous films such as the Pusher trilogy or Bronson to kind of understand where he's coming from. The character of Driver is someone disassociated from society and is one of the marginal people who dont really "fit in", like Ryan O' Neill's character in Driver or Kowolksi in Vanishing Point or indeed Refn's Pusher character.. And, besides, Refn is 10 times the film-maker of that charlatan who made The Artist... The Artist is merely nostalgia for nostalgia sake and very overly-referential of the "golden age" of film-making. Awards panels and film critics are suckers for that sort of thing... I hate films that are clearly only made to win film awards and curry favour with elitist critics....

Besides, you kind of assume that I think Gosling should've been nominated for Drive anyway, he made two very good, Oscar-worthy, films last year, Ides of March, as well. Also NOT nominated....

Well done to Meryl Streep. Great performance in a mediocre film.

^ !

Ended up falling asleep and after watching bits back I didn't really miss much. Pharrell on the drums in the balcony killed me. That whole set up was just all sorts of awkward.

Gutted Tree of Life didn't at least win cinematography. HUGO really?
