Posted January 31, 201213 yr Raising Malawi and buildOn to construct 10 schools for over 1,000 children Madonna has not forgotten her commitment to help the children of Malawi and today announced plans to build ten new schools in Malawi with buildOn, a deeply respected non-profit organization that has an unparalleled track record of school construction in Malawi. buildOn has already built 54 primary schools in Malawi and with Madonna's commitment will greatly expand their work. Madonna who is scheduled to perform at this Sunday's Halftime show, is about to release a new film and a new album still feels passionately about her vow to help Malawi's neediest children receive an education. "This remains a very big priority in my life and I am excited that with the help of buildOn we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently. We now will be able to serve twice as many children as we would have served with our old approach," said Madonna. Raising Malawi, Madonna's charity, previously ran into various difficulties in their original effort to build a girls academy. "I have learned a great deal over the last few years and feel confident that we can reach our goals to educate children in Malawi, especially young girls, in a much more practical way. Constructing smaller schools in partnership with buildOn has restored my faith that we can accomplish what we promised we would," concluded Madonna. Consistently ranked among the world's 20 least developed countries on the UN's Human Development Index, Malawi has long been challenged by economic stagnation and a lack of access to education. With support from Raising Malawi, buildOn will leverage their 19 years of experience in Malawi to construct 10 new schools with the capacity to educate at least 1,000 children per year, half of whom are girls. Malawi has over a half a million children orphaned from the Aids epidemic. Raising Malawi has helped support many of these children for the last several years through various programs. "Because of Madonna and Raising Malawi's support, we will be able to build schools for children that the rest of the world has left behind. Generations of children will have access to education and be empowered to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations," said Jim Ziolkowski, Founder and CEO of buildOn.
April 24, 201213 yr Author Raising Malawi continued commitment to Malawi Raising Malawi sent an email to their friends and supporters to thank them for their continued support and also to provide them with an update on their programs. "The past year has brought important changes for our organization and weve made adjustments which will enable us to continue to achieve our mission of supporting orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi. It has also been an eventful period for the country of Malawi. Deep economic crisis and political turmoil have characterized the past several months, with many Malawians experiencing serious challenges in their daily lives. On April 5, Malawis president, Bingu wa Mutharika, passed away making his Vice President Joyce Banda the second female president in Africa. This is a critical time for Malawi as President Banda attempts to steer Malawi back toward more successful times. It is also a crucial moment for the friends of Malawi to continue to show their support. Raising Malawi remains a committed friend to Malawi and has expanded support in 2012 into the area of education. We are thrilled about our new partnership with the non-profit organization buildOn. Together we are building 10 new schools in rural communities in Malawi. These schools will have the capacity to educate over 1,000 children annually. Our approach includes deep community involvement and a sustainable school model which can be replicated across the country, putting more of Malawis children in the classroom. We broke ground on the first school in Kankhumbwa on February 14, and the project is set to be completed ahead of schedule thanks to a total of 1,190 volunteer work days provided by local community members. Construction on the second school in Mzoweza is currently underway to be completed in June 2012, providing a space to learn for children in the area who currently attend classes outdoors. Construction is also underway on the third school in Jembe, to be completed in July 2012. A photo of children who will benefit from the school in Kankhumbwa is below. For frequent updates and photos of the schools, please visit our Facebook page. This project would not have been possible without support from people like you who have remained committed to helping children in Malawi. Your support has also helped us continue our partnerships with community based organizations in Malawi which work tirelessly to fulfill the basic needs of orphans, vulnerable children, and their caregivers. We look forward to providing additional updates on Raising Malawis programs throughout the year and wish to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support." December 27, 201212 yr Author Madonna announces completion of 10 schools with buildOn Ten primary schools have been completed as part of Madonna's ongoing commitment to support orphans and vulnerable children in poverty stricken Malawi, it has been announced today. The new schools are located in rural villages and will serve to educate 4,871 children. They are a result of the partnership between Madonna, her charity Raising Malawi and the global nonprofit buildOn. The ten schools, which were scheduled to be built over 18 months, have been completed six months ahead of schedule. Six of the schools are already in use and all ten will be up and running in January 2013 for the first day of school in the New Year. The project was originally announced early this year as a major initiative of Raising Malawi, which has already provided millions of dollars in support of orphanages, a network of orphan care service providers, health clinics, a scholarship program for girls, and the schools with buildOn. The location for each school was chosen from a list of communities in need of new infrastructure. The Ministry of Education Office in the Kasungu District was an important partner, providing both the teachers and curriculum after each school was completed. "I am overjoyed that my commitment along with buildOn's to help educate the children of Malawi has come to fruition. In a country where girls have little opportunity for education, it's additionally inspiring to know that more than half the students attending will be young girls. The fact that more than 4,800 children in Malawi will get to go to school next year is a tremendous step forward for their individual growth and the growth of Malawi," commented Madonna. Consistently ranked among the world's 20 least developed countries on the UN's Human Development Index, Malawi has long been challenged by economic stagnation and a lack of access to education. With support from Madonna and Raising Malawi, buildOn was able double the reach of its school construction program within a year. "Madonna's commitment to the children of Malawi is inspiring," said Jim Ziolkowski , founder and CEO of buildOn. "Through Raising Malawi's support we were able to build 10 schools that will educate literally generations of children who need it the most." Souce: Raising Malawi
