A lot of the songs just gone have been defined by otherworldly glories or desolate lows, but 'Fall for You' is just pure, gorgeous happiness throughout, rolling along on a base of drumbeats and guitar strums to compliment those harmonious vocals. Of course, I might love most the middle-8, when the synths start bouncing more loudly, forming a gorgeous pattern than runs through the remainder of the song.

The gradual, hypnotic build of this six-and-a-half minute masterpiece grips onto you, the bassline swirling around, the vocals rising and falling, the clicks drawing you in. When it bursts into that rhythmic, breathless centrepiece, your mind is lost in the ghostly world of the song, eerie sounds creeping in, dragging you through the rest of the song like the dance of death.

When the orchestra piles in, vocals begin to echo, the falsetto heightening, and then we're in the throes of passion - "I'm in love! I'm in love!" - and the song becomes an ecstatic orgasm of self-realisation, self-acceptance and pure, unadulterated adoration.

'Julia' is a song of the night as fine as any I've ever heard, the echoing synths bouncing out of the darkness, the sumptuous vocals of SZA flying upwards as she cries out in the chorus. This year has bought me a lot of happiness but also a great deal of melancholy, and somehow 'Julia' appeals to both, flighty in its beauty ("kiss her... kiss her...") and the whoop of those opening cries, intimate and painful in the whispers and the cries. Sometimes, songs can change your world; sometimes, they can nestle right into the one that already exists, a gentle solace. I wouldn't want to live without it.
