Almost two thirds of that list are songs from 2009 to 2011! Shows how big Gaga, Rihanna and Adele have been in recent years.

Huge gap from Kylie (September 2001) to Leona (December 2006) too, although that's probably more a case of lower sales than any particular male domination. Had sales been higher in the mid-2000s I think we'd see the likes of 'Crazy In Love', 'Toxic' and 'Don't Cha' up there.

Crazy In Love was 'only' the 15th biggest-seller of 2003 so not sure about that one. It was a big hit but in the context of 2003 it wasn't THAT huge (at least sales-wise) and its three weeks at #1 (the last two of them, anyway) was more because of the traditional summer slump then it being a strong place-holder. It's tough to compare things from completely different eras for obvious reasons, but going by their placings relative to others it was released with is probably fairer than most as at least then it's competing with other records under the same circumstances.

Maybe this is an ignorant question, but why exactly were singles sales so bad 2003-2007ish?

From the Noughties decade Chart, Crazy in Love sold 390,000 with 261,000 of that sold in 2003, 154,100 whilst at #1(all 3 weeks)

Collapse in CD sales and downloads not yet being that popular/ not counting toward chart sales. Also albums started to become significantly cheaper therefore CD Singles offered less and less value.

Cheers for that - it makes good sense. It's just kind of weird that singles sales really started to take off as the country went deeper and deeper into recession! But I guess 79p or whatever isn't much to pay for a track, compared to £3.99 10 or 15 years ago!

Oh I thought AB's Hallelujah was great! A real classic! And I love the video too! She's hot. B-)

I agree with you!! It's one of the best covers ever!! Alexandra has very good voice and the audience loved her with her first single!! Don't blame her because she has talent!! It's obvious to be in the Top 10 list!! Hallelujah my friends!!!

I'll drink to that! Hallelujah! :cheer:

IMO, mainly because of record industry conservatism - they stubbornly fought against the irresistable flood of downloading, despite the writing clearly being on the wall for physical singles.

By the time they were dragged, kicking & screaming, into the digital age, something like 50% of singles sales were downloads - and by the time of full download inclusion, more like 70%.

At least album downloads were granted eligibility while they were still only a tiny percentage of the market, but I think the decline in ocerall album sales is more to do with recession belt-tightening & loss of record stores, than of an underlying weakness in the format.

I agree too :) Not sure why people are so down on her version. Her voice is beautiful on it.

I'm glad to hear it!! When i heard "Hallelujah" at first time, it was 3 years ago. I didn't know that she won X-Factor. I looked it in the offcial uk chart and i downloaded without knowing the singer. I loved it immediately because she has powerful vocals and she felt the meaning of song. People are so down on her version only here. Nowhere else, that's why she sold over 1 million copies..British female singers are not only Adele..Too much "Adelomania" here!! i think that there are better singers than her..

Because while she has a beautiful voice she sings it as the perfect singing lesson. There is no feeling in it. Its like she doesn't know what she's singing. Its not a hymn. Its not really religious, in the sense its using biblical language and allegory to show the break down of a relationship. For example, the humilation and degradation is shown through Samson and Delilah 'She broke your throne and she cut your hair'. The 'Hallelujah' is ironic. Alexandra's version sounds airheaded in a way. Where is the passion, where is the pain, where is the torture?

This. Large portions of the song are about sex and the X Factor (and consequently the majority of acts to come out of it) is a pretty sexless ordeal.

Let's not forget that Alexandra had the benefit of Woolworths selling off dozens of her CD singles for as low as 10p, which helped her sales quite a bit...

You couldn't even get a Pick N Mix for that- criminal!

But surely someone singing with feeling or not is a matter of opinion? I think she does on that track. If I want pain and torture I'll listen to someone who can't sing in tune. There's a lot of it about.

Well you won't get any argument from me about the Adele hype. Overrated to say the least. I would take Alexandra over her any day, vocally. When she uses her voice of course.
