32. ETERNAL FLAME- The Bangles (498,000)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/46/Eternal_flame_UK.jpg

RELEASED: 1989

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 20

Proving the original’s are often the best, here’s the Bangles with a massive 80s No 1 spending 4 wks astride the charts in 1989. The “Eternal Flame” referred to was inspired by a local synagogue where writer Steinberg attended as a child, and the one at Elvis’s gravesite in Graceland that the band had visited. Hoffs recorded the vocal naked after the producer convinced her that that was how Olivia Newton John recorded to ensure she got the best vocals.

31. ROLLERCOASTER- B*Witched (498,200)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b0/BWRollercoasterAUS.jpg

RELEASED: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 1

WKS ON CHART: 15

The law of diminishing returns can be seen quite clearly here with subsequent singles by the band appearing here at No’s 36, 93 & 105, but second single “Rollercoaster” spent 2 wks at the top in October 98 (undoubtedly the best year for Irish acts in the charts). In its second week at the top it deprived Brandy’s “Top Of The World” of the honour, the same singer who along with Monica had also suffered the fate with their previous single “The Boy Is Mine”

Looks like I might have bang on with my prediction of the top 30 all selling over 500k!

Good to see the original outsold the AK cover. Beautifully tender ballad and one of the best #1s of the 80s.

Rollercoaster... at the time I probably liked this even MORE than C'est La Vie but I'm not sure what I was getting so excited about now. Although the bridge still gives quite a thrill it only leads to a limp duck of a chorus. Still, good memories. And To You I Belong is also gorgeous, didn't comment on that earlier as I had half my mind on going to bed - though gooddelta said almost everything I would have said, anyway!

I also like Anything, but I think I already made that confession in another one of Gezza's threads. Still, as a vocal group they DO work well I think (must be the brothers thing), even if on their own things are a bit iffy. Of course the rest of their songs were crap though. I guess this one was well-timed with it being February and one of the only love ballads at the top of the charts at the time, hence it managing to climb to #2...

Just been trying to work out the 30 left... I *think* I've got them all from working on mainly memory of what hasn't been and has, and going by what has already been included for some of the more contentious groups.

30. CRAZY FOR YOU- Let Loose (508,000)

RELEASED: 1993/4

PEAK POSITION: 2

WKS ON CHART: 27

Originally released in 1993 the song narrowly failed to make the top 40 but was given a second lease of life a year later in a remixed form and entered straight into the top 30. It took 9 weeks to finally make runner up position before falling victim to the mighty “Love Is All Around” but amassed sales of over half a million to help it secure a place in the year end for 1994. The band split in late 1996 after 5 top 20 hits though the next biggest wouldn’t even sell a third of this.

29. LOVE ME FOR A REASON- Boyzone (535,900)

Whilst Ireland was treated to a cover of “Working My Way Back To You” as a debut single (check out the video redefining the word “awful”), the UK got this one instead. The only No 1 single for 70s heart-throbs The Osmonds (1974) it was originally by Johnny Bristol who failed to chart with it but its Boyzone who scored the biggest hit with it sales wise despite only being involved in the race for Xmas No 1 in 94 on paper only (in reality they were far off Mariah and East 17).

28. WHERE DO YOU GO?- No Mercy (536,900)

Another boy band, another cover this time of a failed (in the UK at least) La Bouche track from 1996 which was married to a backing track not a million miles away from Everything But The Girl’s “Missing”- not entirely a coincidence as a cover of that track was the band’s previous UK release which flopped. Success for them was entirely contained in one year-,1997, but the band continue to this day.

Love the No Mercy track although I prefer Please Don't Go.I remember buying the LP back in 1997. I always thought When I Die would have been massive if released at the right time.
I still get confused between No Mercy and No Doubt!

The dancing in the video is worth a LAUGH. That said, great video - looks like they had a good time and anywhere with sunshine, palm trees and beaches is enough to make me smile while I'm stuck in this shithole where the weather has been MISERABLE all day.

Anyway, they are quite talentless in general but this is irresistible cheese from the golden age of europop. Oddly I seem to have acquired quite a few No Mercy songs on my iTunes without even realising, including their cover of Missing which having just put on as I type this I can confirm is truly rubbish - though like anyone can top Tracey Thorn on that.

Let Loose's track is fantastic. Absolutely love it. Same with No Mercy. :D
You mean you can't tell them apart simply by their music?

I can tell them apart, but sometimes call them by the other name. I know No Mercy is the boyband and No Doubt is essentially Gwen Stefani, but just occasionally I get them the other way around

I have a softspot for No Mercy's cover of EBTG's missing:

27. BABY CAN I HOLD YOU/ SHOOTING STAR- Boyzone (543,700)

RELEASED: 1997

PEAK POSITION: 2

WKS ON CHART: 14

Though Tracy Chapman had sold over a million copies of her debut album only “Fast Car” had been a hit here in 1988 though it did make the top 50 in the US. It fell to Boyzone to make the song into a UK hit for the first time when it became their third No 2 on the trot in late 97 despite opening with sales of over 140k, don’t feel too sorry for them though, the song that prevented them from a 3rd No 1 was “Perfect Day” on which they featured, thus mirroring the Wham!/ Band Aid situation of 1984. It was coupled with “Shooting Star” from the Disney film “Hercules” though little attention was paid to this at the time.
