Taste IS subjective, true. I always vote for the cover that represents the chosen artist and grabs me. There's loads of truly excellent designers on BJ and some truly superb entries this week. Jake, we don't all belong in the same fan club.... sometimes Ryan hits the spot, sometimes he doesn't. Same as everyone who enters this contest. Nobody should ever be guaranteed votes just because they're your mate regardless of their work.

I agree with Jake - as a designer Ryan's composition and style does sell it a lot better, even if not his best compared to others. But yeah, taste is subjective - we all really like different aspects of different things. Composition is my absolute most important thing when deciding a cover, and also whether it's polished or not.

And also, to put up someone else's cover against Ryan's and then question whether they're 'serious' about scoring Ryan lower... sorry, but that's just downright insulting to the other designer.

As I said, nobody is immune from poor votes in this contest. And to just religiously give top marks again and again to the same designers, whoever that designer may be, is unfair and a bit ridiculous.

There's been covers entered the past three weeks that I've been aghast at the high voting for. But it's rude and insulting to bring this up because it's belittling that person's efforts, and this is supposed to be a 'just for fun' contest, not a bitch fest.

And also.... not a 'love-in' for your mates and their mates.

I don't do it RELIGIOUSLY, but he's pretty much got a 7+ score from me every week for the last god knows how many weeks because he's that talented. I hardly think it's a love-in, I don't talk to the guy otherwise... in fact I don't talk to anyone from the cover game otherwise.

As for YU&&&I he seemed to know what I meant when I explained myself, but even if he thought I was being a c**t of c**ts... so what? The scores will speak for themselves and if he ended up higher than Ryan my opinion counts for jack shit and he should be proud of himself.

I know what you're saying about most of the designers voting for each other highly but that's just it, we're all doing this for some sort of living so it's within our nature to be consistent so our scores towards that designer will be consistent I think! But yes we all have off-times, but as far as I've seen there's been a lot of varied scores week-on-week for everyone.

omg I caused drama.

WHAT HAVE I STARTED.

Russ all I was saying is that based on quality I was shocked that it could be seen as one of the worst. That's just how I vote but people obviously vote differently like you vote on what grabs your attention and what represents the artist and that's fine. It's just that for me the quality is one of the main things and how polished it is like Lewis says and Ryan's just always happen to be.

I don't know what you mean about constantly voting for the same people and there being some sort of love-in whatever that means. If I like the style of someone elses covers I'm obviously gonna vote them highly every week especially if they're good surely? Plus like Lewis says I don't really talk to anyone outside of here so I don't know why you'd think I'd vote for someone just because I'm supposedly their mate.

Wow. I'm not quite sure how to comment on any of this. I do think my cover this week is a lot better than some of my recent output but obviously not everyone is going to like it. Just how the game works.

I tend for vote for the covers that are the most creative. You and Jake seem to be constantly doing different things and I don't feel like you're just rehasing the same concept or throwing some text on a generic photo from Google. The idea behind the "friend" vote is ludicrous seeing how majority of the people taking part in this don't seem to talk to anyone outside of the thread/forum.

I noticed that myself - I wish I had a bit more of a consistent style but then again I think by doing different things you open yourself to a whole load of different ideas~ I wanna be a designer you see (hopefully) so I kinda want to have my own strong characteristic in my work one day but right now I'm content in PLAYING THE FIELD +

Jake is amazing, he tackles vintage so well which I REALLY want to be able to do like he does.

It's just a game on an internet forum. We don't have to worry about consistency. Just throwing some ideas against the wall and seeing what sticks is part of the fun.

Yeah, I used to use the find-something-on-google-images-and-add-a-horrible-font approach but not anymore. It's really fun doing different things each week, and it paid off for me, as I was hardly ever Top 5 before this 'era'.

I know, it's just my designer head seeing all of these polished people in life with all of their well-shown quirks whereas I literally do everything and everything LMAO

och it's just a debate, me n Russ are cool always I hope x

God yea, of course! And by the way, your cover this week is orgasmic. So there ;-)

And leww.... You're making yourself sound like a design slag. Play the field.... it's fun ;-) I'm 50/50 on whether by looking at a cover, you know who the designer is. It's nice to have your own distinctive design style, bit I love seeing our BJ designers pushing the boat out and going a bit leftfield on us.

I think the best designs are the ones that represent the act. You couldn't have a pink and fluffy cover for a death metal act, for example. and I don't see any problem whatsoever in choosing a google image if that google image is relevant and fits the act.

Anyway, let's face it, we have some stupidly talented people entering every week. Whether what they do appeals to all is irrelevant. Most of the finest artists were misunderstood in their day. Perhaps the best and lasting art is the art people don't understand right now?

Waffle over... Now get voting folks x

I almost failed to vote! LOL
