Midweek Charts: Madonna set to surpass Elvis on all-time list

Source: MW

15:45 | Wednesday March 28, 2012

By Paul Williams

Madonna is on course to overtake Elvis Presley with the most UK number one albums by a solo act of all time as her newly-issued MDNA heads to the top this weekend.

The album, her first released through Interscope/Polydor since her departure from long-time home Warner, had sold around 39,000 copies up to the end of business on Tuesday, according to the Official Charts Company. That is more than the next five albums combined.

If, as expected, MDNA does reach number one this Sunday it would be Madonna’s 12th chart-topper, one more than Elvis Presley has managed. Only The Beatles with 15 number ones have topped the chart more times.

A long distance behind Madonna in second place in the week so far is David Guetta with his Postiva/Virgin-issued Nothing But The Beat, while XL’s Adele album 21 progresses 5-3, despite weekly sales dropping 29%, and Emeli Sande’s Virgin debut Our Version Of Events holds at four.

Below them are two albums with triple-digit percentage rises: Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Jessie J’s Who You Are. Sales of Perry’s Virgin album Teenage Dream are up 258% on the week to move 34-5 following the release of an extended The Complete Confection version, which includes her number one single Part Of Me. Meanwhile, there is a 184% week-on-week increase for Jessie J’s Island/Lava album to send it 23-6 following her exposure as a judge on BBC One’s The Voice last Saturday.

The same programme has also helped several of her singles see a jump in sales, including Domino, which moves 14-13 on the midweeks with a 10.3% rise, Mamma Know Best, which is new at 40 after contestant J Marie Cooper performed it, and Price Tag, up 87-61 following Voice hopeful Jessica Hammond’s interpretation.

Also enjoying a renaissance thanks to The Voice is Columbia act Train’s 2001 hit Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me), up 108-41 on the midweeks after being the choice of contestant Justin Grennan.

Back on albums and Paul Weller’s Island album Sonik Kicks, having debuted at one last Sunday, is the new chart week’s seventh top seller.

MDNA is one of 10 brand new releases showing up among the Top 40 positions, a list also including a repackaging by Rhino of her Warner albums, called The Complete Studio Albums 1983-2008. This is the 39th top seller in the week to date.

Decca artist Noah Stewart’s first album Noah crops up as a new entry at 10, while En Vivo, a new live/video album by EMI’s Iron Maiden, debuts at 11. Other albums appearing as midweek new entries include titles from Roadrunner’s Shinedown, DC3’s Alter Bridge, Interscope/Polydor’s All-American Rejects, EMI Classics’ Crowe/Hanslip/Bell/LSO/Jenkins, Warner Bros’s Mars Volta and V2’s Blood Red Shoes.

On singles Chris Brown looks on course to achieve his first UK chart-topper with his brand new RCA single Turn Up The Music’s sales nearly double that of nearest rival, She Doesn’t Mind by Atlantic artist Sean Paul. Brown’s current UK chart peak is two, achieved by his first hit Run It! in 2006.

Katy Perry, who debuted at one last Sunday as Paul entered at two, drops to three on the midweeks with her Virgin single Part Of Me, while Gotye featuring Kimbra’s Island single Somebody That I Used To Know slips 3-4 and Cash Money/Island’s Nicki Minaj holds at five with Starships. Fewer than 100 sales behind Minaj at this stage of the week in sixth position is Ill Manors, the brand new single from 679/Atlantic’s Plan B, while Atlantic single Wild Ones by Flo Rida featuring Sia climbs 8-7 to swap positions with Positiva/Virgin’s David Guetta featuring Sia’s Titanium, while Syco’s Labrinth falls 4-9 with Last Time and Virgin’s Emeli Sande 9-10 with Next To Me.

Midweek Charts update: Brown leads all international top five

Source: MW

13:21 | Friday March 30, 2012

By Paul Williams

UK acts could be locked out of the singles chart’s top five for the first time this year on Sunday with Chris Brown and Sean Paul heading an overseas invasion.

American Brown appears on course for his first ever UK number one with his newly-issued RCA single Turn Up The Music around 24,000 sales ahead of closest rival She Doesn’t Mind by Atlantic-signed Jamaican Paul up to the end of business on Thursday, according to the Official Charts Company.

With Virgin’s US act Katy Perry currently at three with Part Of Me, Cash Money/Island’s Trinidadian-born Nicki Minaj occupying fourth place with Starships and the Island single Somebody That I Used To Know by Aussie-Belgian Gotye featuring Kimbra fifth the chart’s leading places are at this stage of the week a Brits-free zone.

The highest domestic act is 679/Atlantic’s Plan B whose Ill Manors is showing up as a new entry at six, while Syco’s Labrinth, who was four on last Sunday’s chart, is currently in eighth place with Last Time.

On albums Madonna is all but certain to overtake Elvis Presley and achieve the most UK number ones by a solo artist as her Interscope/Polydor debut MDNA heads to the top with around 47,000 sales by the end of Thursday. It would be her 12th UK number one, beating Presley’s 11.

Positiva/Virgin act David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat is more than 30,000 sales presently behind in second place, where it sat on last Sunday’s chart, while XL act Adele with 21 and Virgin signing Emeli Sande with Our Version Of Events are a further few thousand sales back in third and fourth positions. A newly-issued extended version of Kay Perry’s second Virgin album, entitled Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, helps the album rise 34-5, while her exposure on BBC One show The Voice sends Island/Lava’s Jessie J racing in the week so far 23-6 with Who You Are.

Oh well... its Chris Brown this week :nocheer: Hopefully Madonna will have the #1 album in the bag :cheer:
Madonna for #1 obviously, album sales below her will be poor and only look to be getting worse - Lostprophets and Nicki Minaj should have 20k+ openings next week but unless the latter holds up really well the #1 could have some dreadful sales before too long as there's not a great deal out in the next month or so.

The success of that new song by Chris Brown is something I don't get. Even the latest Sean Paul single is more accessible.

Why do you expect The Script to climb? Have they decided to call it quits and people celebrate by buying that well-crafted piece of non-music?

Danny is one of the judges on the Voice, and their albums are showing on the iTunes album chart, both albums are most likely to climb.

I'm pretty curious how many copies from MDNA will be sold. That will show if she's still strong enough to sell well or not anymore.

I'm also hoping Masterpiece () and Girl Gone Wild could enter the top 75. BTW Girl Gone Wild is also the second single. Is it out or only as an album track?

Surely madges sales wont be as high as usual now radio 1 have ditched her. I worry for album sales in the coming month. Did any GAME outlets sell albums?

Question: How low do you think album sales will get in the coming months? :o I predict the #1 album will be selling 15k a week by August.

I think GAME did sell albums. :(

Yeah I don't get the success of the Chris Brown song either. It's not catchy or memorable at all. Weird :s

Can't find early chart info on how well Madonna's album is doing (sales wise), its frustrating not knowing anything till Weds late afternoon. If anyone comes across any feel free to post up.

Boo

Chris Brown is going to overtake Katy Perry(which is also a rubbish song)

I suppose it's not the first time Chris Brown has beaten a woman

Well that's no 1 sown up then barring something truly exceptional. Making her and kylie the only acts to have chart topping albums in each of the last 4 decades.
