An American pop-punk band called One Direction are suing the UK’s One Direction over who has the rights to use the band name One Direction.

The American One Direction claim they formed in 2009, a year before Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson got together on X Factor. Also, the US’s band’s debut album, The Light, went on sale in February 2011, eight months before the UK’s One Direction released their debut album, Up All Night.

To make matters worse, not only have confused American fans being purchasing the American One Direction’s album when they meant to buy the UK band’s album, US TV channel NBC accidentally used one of the American One Direction’s tracks on their Today Show programme as a soundbed for footage of the UK’s band’s recent visit to the US! FML!

The US One Direction claim they are entitled to nearly £600,000 in damages, plus three times the profits the UK’s One Direction have made.

Interesting

X Factor group names have been having a hard time over the past year. Rhythmix had to change to Little Mix because of a charity based in the UK - but that was before they even released their debut single. I imagine One Direction (UK) will be able to keep their name as they are much more popular and have global sucess plus a debut album. One Direction (US) should just be happy that people are "accidently" buying their album :P

^ Yeah Rhythmix X-Factor lost because they weren't established, 1D will (sadly :kink:) be fine.

I don't see why the American band are complaining though? 'Oh NO we're getting more money!' I also can't see how they haven't noticed before, they must google themselves

Absurd claim!

1. If people are buying the US album by mistake, they are making more money than they would have.

2. HTF can they claim damages + three times the profits when they have not lost a penny.

Anything to get rid of One Direction. Technically they should lose, but the won't. Why did they even change their name from New Direction? was it because it sounded like Nude Erection?

Ironically, because New Directions is the name of the showchoir on Glee - so they changed because of something similar to this

They were never called New Direction... And I can't see them not winning this; it's pretty ridiculous that they've only just noticed.
I swear they were (albeit very briefly) called New Direction, but it was switfly changed to One Direction shortly afterwards?

They were called New Direction.

Artists no1curr about are so annoying these days. First Lazy Jay telling Azealia that using his music on '212' was damaging to his career and now this. Any excuse for money.
They weren't called New Direction, I'm 100% sure of it. Their book says they spent ages thinking of a name before Harry came up with One Direction.
If they lose, 1D is the obvious choice surely, most of their fans call them this anyway and people will still refer to them as One Direction as it will still stand for it.

Not even money, usually - just publicity.

After all, for your career to be damaged, you have to have one in the first place...
