7digital welcomes Sainsbury’s music download service

7digital has welcomed the launch of Sainsbury’s new music download service saying, “It’s great to see a large brand like Sainsbury’s entering the digital download market.”

The company’s CEO Ben Drury said that the inclusion of Sainsbury’s in the digital music sphere “further increases the destinations where consumers can legally access music.

“Customers now expect to not be tied to a specific device manufacturer, so the next step for digital content providers is to offer customers an easy way to access all their legally purchased music through the channels of their choice, without having to spend both time transferring files, and money re-buying tracks they already own," he added.

“7digital is platform agnostic and allows customers to access their music from their 7digital Locker across all mainstream devices, through apps available for Android, iOS, RIM and Windows operating systems.”

“We’ve also been working with partners to have the app pre-loaded onto many devices including those from Samsung, Acer and HTC. This ecosystem means that once a track has been purchased and available in the 7digital Locker, customers can listen to their tracks on the move legally and hassle-free,” he concluded.

The new service launched yesterday. It is hosted on the Sainsbury’s Entertainment website and provides customers with access to over 2.3 million downloads.

At last. Can use my discount card too to reduce the tracks to 81p - which'll come in handy when trying to save a bit of ££. As for the free track, I've just download Tulisa's 'Young' - it was a difficult choice between that and the new Florence and the Machine track, but I think I need to listen to the latter a bit more before purchasing it.

It's probably because one of the co-owners of 7Digital is Ben Drury who worked for Music Week for a number of years as the website manager of Music Week's then online presence, dotmusic.com. During his time with dotmusic he helped launch the first real downloads service in the UK .Sadly he then oversaw the sale of dotmusic to yahoo in 2003 which is when the website was closed down . After this he then went on to form 7Digital in January 2004 after dotmusic closed. I think Ben Drury must still be in contact with his former colleagues as a few of them were working for Music Week when he was running dotmusic, hence why he often provides quotes in the magazine.

Oooh discounted download for me :kink:

I love how this hasn't even been publicised at work though. I wonder if anybody will know to download from there, unless they visit the website?
