Fair enough. I'll give you that one. :D

Steps will be taking their number 1 at the expense of the Manics as their sales in week 2 were much stronger.

Manics went 1-5 whilst Steps went 2-6, so Manics were ahead of them for the first two weeks. Maybe Boyzone will just get more weeks on top with No Matter What...

I'd much rather have Steps but you're probably right. I know that when the Manics were at number 1 it was one of the few times - outside of a December chart - that the top 3 all sold 100,00+ so Boyzone have 100,000 plus their previous week which was bound to be around that figure (or more) also and then the following week the held on at number 3. They have it easily.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS- IF YOU TOLERATE THIS YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE NEXT- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5f/If_You_Tolerate_This_Your_Children_Will_Be_Next.jpg

PEAK POSITION: 3

Poor manics, they have their first chart topper relegated to No 3 unable to move past either Boyzone or Stardust in those autumn sales charts. Opening with146k of sales they far from disgraced themselves and would have stood a far greater chance of keeping the No 1 spot on this thread had it not tumbled 1-5-11 in it's opening three weeks. Given its Spanish Civil War theme and the line "If I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists" it was with some irony when it briefly appeared on the National Front website before Sony got it removed under breach of copyright.

ALL SAINTS- BOOTIE CALL- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1b/BootieCallCover.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

Proving that getting a third straight No 1 was just beyond the band as far as our chart re-write is concerned, the All Saints are similarly prevented making the top 2 with Robbie Williams and Boyzone (again) stopping further progress. Not much to argue with here the song coming nowhere the top 40 best sellers of the year come December.

MELANIE B FT MISSY ELLIOTT- I WANT YOU BACK- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bb/I_Want_You_Back_(Melanie_B_single).jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

With new No 1's every week in September 1998 there are going to be casualties but Mel B's failure to hold on the No 1 spot in the third demotion of the month! A hasty retreat From No 1 which saw the song stand at No 15 come its third week on the survey means that perhaps even getting to No 2 on this thread might be a surprise. Given to Mel B by co writer Missy Elliott is also gave the rapper her first UK chart topper and was apparently recorded in one day.

SPACEDUST- GYM N TONIC- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f2/Gym_and_Tonic_Spacedust.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 4

Again, little surprise here I think. Spacedust were UK DJ's who took a Bob Sinclar track "Gymtonic" (Co produced by half of Daft Punk) which never saw the light of day after Jane Fonda refused to give permission for her vocals to be used, and re-recorded the spoken parts with a session muscian. Bingo a No 1, or No 4 according to this thread.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS- IF YOU TOLERATE THIS YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE NEXT- NON NUMBER ONE

PEAK POSITION: 3

I can't argue with its status as a non number 1, but this is my favourite song from them and one of my top 3 favourite number 1s ever :( at least Steps didn't get there I guess...

Bootie Call & I Want You Back are awful though and deserve the demotion

and finally for 1998....

B*WITCHED- TO YOU I BELONG- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/05/BWTYIB.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 4

Another victim of being stuck between colossal sellers B*Witched can't get a hat trick of No 1's in 1998 as "To You I Belong" can't crack the top 3 in a highly competitive Xmas chart. In all fairness with the arrival of Spice Girls and Chef and their massive first week sales the girls just can't compete and the song goes down as an also ran.

11.07.98 GHETTO SUPASTAR- Pras Michel/ ODB/ Mya (2 wks) NEW

03.10.98 ROLLERCOASTER- B*Witched (3 wks)

24.10.98 GIRLFRIEND- Billie (1 wk)

31.10.98 BELIEVE- Cher (7 wks)

19.12.98 GOODBYE- Spice Girls (1 wk)

26.12.98 CHOCOLATE SALTY BALLS (P.S I LOVE YOU)- Chef (3 wks)

Only the two spice Girls records manage to debut at the top.

Nothing really interesting or surprising for me in 1998 to be honest. And only one song being promoted, even if it is the second best #2 of the year (only behind the godly The Boy Is Mine, of course). :( Sad to see the misunderstood Bootie Call demoted, though it was always going to happen with that 1-7 plummet.

And Gym & Tonic is, as everyone who was "there" at the time knows, the WORST, most vacant and pointless #1 ever. Demotion isn't enough really, it should have been ignored from this thread and erased from history completely.

Maybe the start of 1999 (pre-Britney) could be interesting with a string of one-weekers selling similar amounts. Though I imagine the reality will just be Steps getting a couple of bonus weeks, and The Offspring maybe also extending another week. Hopefully Blondie can retain their status though.

But after that it looks kind of boring to me with some big sellers every few weeks that should be mopping up.

Also, just to ADD, while we're still technically in 1998 with this thread, I wonder where the infamous How Do I Live peaked on this chart?

Just noticed upon looking at the #1 list again also that Rollercoaster spent longer at #1 than C'est La Vie with this system. That just looks WRONG. :drama: And I thought Billie would perhaps be the most unfortunate act in this thread in terms of losing ALL of her #1s but at least Girlfriend has kept on, even if its luck came with being between Rollercoaster's last week and the aforementioned ghastly Gym & Tonic. I've never really noticed how strangely dead October '98 was until now (usually you would expect that from January or August, yet October should be when the industry is building up to Xmas) before we got that first ever all-new top 5 at the end of it - though perhaps that was the reason WHY that could happen as everything else was so weak. And we also had Brandy/Ma$e with one of the most forgotten #2s ever, though I love it.

God, I'm rambling now, sorry. I actually only came in here with the intention to ask about LeAnn Rimes, lol. :(

 she made No 6. Her sales were never individually spectacular so she suffered from the big sellers always being above her then dipping below if you see what I mean.

Clearly in October everyone heard Cher and thought why bother to compete? :D

FATBOY SLIM- PRAISE YOU- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/af/Praise_You.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

So here we are in 1999 and the first victim of those harsh January conditions is Fatboy Slim. Third single from the album "you've Come A Long Way Baby" proved to be the highest peaking one when it made No 1 on the real chart but here comes up against Steps Million Seller "Heartbeat/ Tragedy" and comes off the worse. It sold some 165k in its first three weeks on sale which was still a good 20k short of the Steps single in those three weeks.

911- A LITTLE BIT MORE- NON NUMBER ONE

http://www.cdandvinyl.co.uk/images/ebaypics/48385.JPG

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

Fairing even worse than Fatboy Slim are Boy band 911 who lose their sole chart topper in the January 1999 chart melee which saw a five chart toppers in as many weeks. Again it came a cropper at the hands of the Offspring and Steps who hogged the top 2 positions in the final week of the month- would anyone argue this ISN'T forgotten?
