Belated mini-tribute to Kopečka

As many of you know already, the current 48th edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest has seen the number of ever-presents fall from 4 to 3 as former BJSC legends Kopečka chose to bow out of the contest forever. There has been some isolated outbursts of mourning in Persephonia and across the BuzzJack world, dampened slightly by the rather muted reception to the last couple of entries from the nation. As a small token of appreciation here is Kopečka's last great entry, 'Leave The Lights On' by Meiko.

The remaining three ever-present nations - Ashton, FSR Rontvia and Kylienips - are still with us thankfully.

Machines Don't Care and Meleka qualify for the XLVIII final in Flynt!

Persephonian President Salim Zosimus is delighted to announce that after 2 straight disappointing near-misses, Persephonia will appear in a BuzzJack Song Contest final once again!

We are especially excited to be included in the event final in the rapidly rising nation of Aeroche after missing out on the first opportunity a month ago.

New entry 'Beat Dun Drop' by Machines Don't Care feat. Meleka was heavily tipped by Persephonian pundits to return out nation to the grand final but some doubt sprang up when the 'pop' track was drawn into semi-final 1 competing mostly against more 'indie'-leaning nations. But nonetheless it did not disappoint and we now hope for a respectable finish in Flynt.

International predictors largely saw the qualification coming, with eight out of ten countries predicting the song to qualify from semi-final one and average odds so far for Persephonia being at 38/1, the 9th shortest odds in semi-final one and 21st shortest overall.

'Beat Dun Drop' has been drawn into 11th position in the final.

Full semi-final results summary

As auto-qualifiers, Aeroche already secured a place in the final. But what of the other 30 qualification slots and the 22 unlucky failures?

From our own semi-final, few will be surprised by the qualification of Järkangel or Numayania - each predicted by 10/10 people to qualify - or indeed Bignia-Zaragovina, Espen or FSR Rontvia, each predicted to qualify by 9/10. Elëdan and (as reported above) ourselves got through after eight qualification predictions, Syndare after seven, Kylienips after six and B.a.N.G after five. Slightly more surprising qualifiers (receiving less than half positive predictions) came from Zechonia (4), Fervorosia, Ingermanlandia, Utopia (3 each) and arguably the biggest shock of the semi, Isconia (2).

Sandebörg and Umiiruka were the two biggest shock DNQs of the semi after both receiving 8 predictions to qualify, while other somewhat unexpected DNQs came from Ashton (7), Aquafina and Lorikeet (both 6). The latter did not submit their votes on time however which likely cost them a deserved place in the final. Danaelanda, Deandria (both with 5 predictions), Launiça and Keypopian Republic (both 2) probably surprise few in failing to qualify and the same is true to an even greater extent for Skall and Mezidinia who each received just one positive prediction.

Semi-final 2's most predicted qualifiers were even more clear cut with five songs receiving 12/12 predictions to qualify and all five sailing through as expected - congratulations then to #00274E, Altyr Muunilinst, Daehun, Ramrynia and Séyetana. Fljótavík and Hendinia each fell one prediction short of joining those five, but both join the five in the final. Mdiče similarly fell two short of perfect predictions and also reach the final. N DNTN with their 8 predictions and Farahtyn, PRoJ and Unovia with 7 each are also unsurprising qualifiers, leaving little room for 'shock' qualifiers - only Budtar (5 predictions), Usfland (4) and biggest shockers Greenfroze (3) arguably qualifying as those.

As such, the majority of the expected non-qualifiers indeed don't progress further - commiserations to Batidas (5 predictions), Terra Avium, Tinnmark (4 each), Lake Thermwoods (2), Botanikka, Kluminica, N-Lazone (1 each) and the most expected non-qualifier of the competition Scherzland who didn't receive a single prediction to qualify. On the opposing end of the scale there is one big shock DNQ from Allecian after 10/12 predictions to qualify, with Bellamia and Caerfyrddia also being somewhat surprising non-qualifiers with 9 and 8 predictions respectively.

So how will things go in the final? We can only wait to find out...

Persephonia's revealable voting scores

Here are the ranks and point scores awarded to songs in semi-final one of this BJSC that we can reveal (i.e. the songs that have failed to qualify for the final):

4th Skall 9.5/10 (7 points awarded)

8th Deandria 9/10 (3 points awarded)

9th Launiça 8/10 (2 points awarded)

13th Lorikeet 7/10

14th Umiiruka 6.5/10

16th Danaelanda 6.5/10

17th Aquafina 6/10

21st Ashton 4/10

22nd Mezidinia 4/10

23rd Keypopian Republic 4/10

25th Sandebörg 1.5/10

Machines Don't Care and Meleka bag Persephonia's sixth best finish ever!

Jubilation is abound across Persephonia as BJSC XLVIII entry 'Beat Dun Drop' by Machines Don't Care feat. Meleka bagged a 17th place finish in Flynt, Aeroche, receiving a total of 79 points from 18 voters!

It's almost an exact repeat of our performance in BJSC XLII, where Azari & III's 'Reckless (With Your Love)' also came 17th but received 80 points, one more than 'Beat Dun Drop' managed.

As a result of that one point difference 'Beat Dun Drop' just barely misses out on becoming Persephonia's joint fifth best finish by points in its 27-contest history, instead coming in sixth behind the successes of Spark's 'Revolving' (XXX, 156 points), Jónsi's 'Animal Arithmetic' (XXVI, 142 points), Beth Ditto's 'I Wrote The Book' (XXXI, 119 points), Kidnap Kid's 'Vehl' (XLV, 94 points) and the aforementioned 'Reckless (With Your Love)'.

It does however provide the joint fifth best final position for Persephonia. Spark's 6th place finish remains our only top 10 success with Ditto's 13th place in second, while Kidnap Kid managed 14th and Jónsi 15th. Also coming 17th aside from Azari & III and now Machines Don't Care/Meleka was XXIII entry 'Cousins' by Vampire Weekend. These seven are the only top 20 hits for Persephonia.

Further final coverage will be published tomorrow if all goes well but suffice to say for now that yes, Aeroche bagged a second home victory in a row and a third in a row (a first in BJSC history) including the one on Ingermanlandian soil. The 49th edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest will refreshingly not be held in Aeroche yet again, instead the baton is passed to Persephonia's ally and fellow Jubirdia member Ramrynia after their 2nd-place finish with entry 'Dancing To The Same Song' by Elen Levon. It will be the first BuzzJack Song Contest final to be hosted in a Jubirdia nation since the union's formation, though member state Hendinia has hosted in the past.

Persephonia's next entry decided by internal selection

Persephonia is being prompt again with its entry selection, with our entry for XLIX having already been decided. The track is a return to a perhaps more familiar Persephonian sound compared to the last two months' deviation from the Persephonia 'formula', but hopes are high for the track to bring home another success for the nation.

BJSC XLVIII: the full final results

As previously reported, Aeroche landed a third consecutive win, the first such occurrence in BJSC history, with their entry 'Need U' by Unicorn Kid. It raked in 159 points to take the win, lower than the scores their previous two entries got for their wins. Nonetheless, it gives Aeroche's entry history a remarkable 60% win rate as only their first two entries failed to take the crown. Leadership switched constantly between mainly 'Need U' and Séyetana entry 'Love Stuck' by Dream Beats feat. THE F▲CE as the votes were revealed. 'Love Stuck' ended up settling for third behind Ramrynia's entry 'Dancing To The Same Song' by Elen Levon, which marked the second time Levon finished 2nd in a BJSC final. Numayania continued a great year by snatching fourth with 'Strangers In The Night' by ItaLove, while Fljótavík made a welcome return to the BJSC top 5 with Visions Of Tree's 'Turn 2 U', Persephonian voters' favourite of the top ten songs. Both Ramrynia and Séyetana achieved personal best positions in a great month for Jubirdia's nations.

There were two other Jubirdia nations in the XLVIII top 10 - Daehun brought K-Pop up there as only they can to finish 8th with entry 'Anymore' by Seo In Young, while BJSC heavyweight Hendinia bagged another top 10 albeit only barely, Havana Brown's 'You'll Be Mine' coming tenth. Also coming top 10 were Espen's entry 'När Mitt Blod Pumpar I Dig' by Nordpolen in 6th, Ricki-Lee's 'Burn It Down' representing Järkangel in 7th and Usfland's 'Five Seconds' by Twin Shadow in 9th.

The song that the aforementioned 'You'll Be Mine' kept out of the top 10 by a single point? A fifth Jubirdia entry, 'It's Time' by Imagine Dragons representing Bignia-Zaragovina. Persephonian voters' favourite track of the final, Utopia entry 'Evil Beauty' by Blackmill, came 12th and was the lowest entry to get over 100 points. Surprise semi-final 1 winners Fervorosia took a dip to 13th in the final with former UK chart hit 'All I Know' by Matrix & Futurebound feat. Luke Bingham (another big favourite of Persephonian voters), while heavy favourites-to-win #00274E put in a no doubt disappointing 14th place finish, with 'Maybe You' by Saint Lou Lou. Budtar rounded off the top 15 with 'Ready Or Not' by Bridgit Mendler.

As previously reported, our own entry 'Beat Dun Drop' by Machines Don't Care feat. Meleka came 17th - thus being the lowest of the six qualified Jubirdia entries, but outperforming entries by Aquafina, Bellamia and Umiiruka that did not qualify for the final. PRoJ's 'Nocturne' by Wild Nothing came 16th, 'Everything Is Embarrassing' by Sky Ferreira came 18th representing Altyr Muunilinst, 19th was Ingermanlandia's Dead Can Dance with 'Opium' and Kylienips finished the top 20 with 'Only In My Dreams' by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti.

Moving into the lower echelons of the final results: Farahtyn's Asher Monroe with 'Here With You' was 21st, Syndare's MØ with 'Maiden' 22nd, Unovia's Lupe Fiasco-assisted Guy Sebastian track 'Battle Scars' 23rd and N DNTN's 'Fear Of Love' by Noosa 24th.

And thus the dreaded bottom 7 countries were Zechonia (Tall Dark Friend's 'Corridors' 25th), Elëdan (Dasha Luks' 'Diskoteka' 26th), an unusually poor performance for FSR Rontvia (Frida Amundsen's 'Rush' 27th), Mdiče (the Japanese version of Chairlift's 'I Belong In Your Arms' 28th), Isconia (the Tara Busch AnalogSuicide Remix of Ren Harvieu's 'Forever In Blue' 29th), B.a.N.G (Hiatus and Shura's 'Fortune's Fool' 30th) and finally with the wooden spoon, albeit the highest scoring wooden spoon in BJSC history, Greenfroze, for which Draumurinn's eponymous track still raked in a respectable 53 points to come 31st and last.

President Salim Zosimus would like to personally congratulate each country on their individual performances in a brilliantly tense and high-quality contest. He'd like to, but he can't, as he's currently very busy.

More photos of the week PLEASE

Persephonian News Bulletin sadly lost its rights to publish the photo of the week after the first one :( (AKA it was a one-off injoke).

(However, as a special request, here is a photo of an odd cloud formation over a beach in Noosa, Australia. Note the unusual colours believed to have been caused by FLOP).

Official lists of Persephonia's favourite countries: Persephljótavík?

To recognise the Zosimus government's increased interest in the BuzzJack Song Contest, they have revealed concise lists of the countries that Persephonia have given the most points to in the finals of BJSC XLII to present and of the countries that have given the most to Persephonia in finals in the same timeframe.

The most immediately obvious conclusion of the tables is that Persephonia's biggest voting ally is clearly Fljótavík. The nation tops both lists, having received 30 points from Persephonian voters and having awarded Persephonia 28 points since the 42nd edition of the contest. Persephonia awarded at least one point to the country in four of the seven contests covered in the data (they qualified for six of the seven finals), while they awarded at least one point to Persephonia in all four of the finals we have qualified for.

Aside from Fljótavík, the top 5s of the two lists share no common countries. Persephonian voters' second favourite country since BJSC XLII is Ingermanlandia who have received 29 points, while Batidas and PRoJ have each received 24 with Batidas getting prominence on the list due to receiving points on 3 occasions to PRoJ's 2. Caerfyrddia rank 5th with 22 points received.

The rest of the top 5 for countries who have awarded the most points to Persephonia consists of Skall (22, 2nd), Utopia (21, 3rd), Mdiče (20, 4th) and N-Lazone (19, 5th). Mdiče rank 6th for most points received from Persephonia while the only other country in both top 10s is Umiiruka, who are joint 10th for most points received and 9th for most points awarded (16 and 15 respectively).

In total, Persephonia have given at least 1 point to 36 different countries over the seven finals, while we have received at least one point from 37 different countries in the four finals we've qualified for. Obviously we've awarded a total of 406 points (58 per contest) in the timeframe, equating to us giving an average of 11.3 points to the countries on the former list. We've received 324 points for our last 4 qualifiers combined, or an average of 8.8 points from each of the countries on the latter list.

'Why does the data only represent the contests since XLII?' you may be wondering. President Salim Zosimus was only formally elected on the 26th of May, 2012, in the gap between BJSC XLIV and XLV. However, the former Republic of Persephonia had been essentially led by Zosimus as early as BJSC XLII and so this is generally considered to be the first contest of the new Persephonian-Carellisienne Union of Persephonia and Far Island rather than BJSC XLV. Before Zosimus' influence massively increased public interest in the contest, Persephonia (and formerly Egabbac) had somewhat of a reputation of failing to turn in votes and not taking the contest seriously enough.

Deaf Club represent Persephonia in BJSC XLIX!

As revealed in the grand BJSC showcase on Thursday in Cherry Tree City, Ramrynia, Persephonia's 28th entry to the BuzzJack Song Contest is 'Moving Still' by London-based Welsh band Deaf Club!

The track was considered by the Persephonian committee for BJSC XLVI but lost out to Angel Haze's 'New York'; we moved away from the XLVI shortlist entirely to send Machines Don't Care last contest but we're now returning to it in the hopes that it can be second time lucky for the list ('New York' failed to qualify).

You can listen to the song below and as always feel free to drop any thoughts.

Angel Haze 'smashes' into UK charts!

'New York' by Angel Haze may have failed to qualify for Persephonia in BJSC XLVI but this week it enters the official UK Singles chart at a very respectable #58. It's the fifth Persephonian entry to reach the UK Singles Chart top 100 and the first since our XXXVIII entry, 'Gabriel' by Joe Goddard featuring Valentina (which also did not qualify in the contest, but charted at #49 in the UK).

Persephonia's first ever entry, 'Ghosts N Stuff' by deadmau5 featuring Rob Swire, is the biggest UK hit of the lot peaking at #12 again despite not qualifying for the final in the actual contest. Vampire Weekend's 'Cousins' came 17th for us in BJSC XXIII and peaked at #39 in the UK while XXVII entry 'Hey Hey' by Dennis Ferrer came 38th in the contest and reached #55 in the UK.

XXXI entry 'I Wrote The Book' by Beth Ditto (Persephonia's second best performing entry finishing 13th) also charted in the UK at #76 as part of Ditto's self-titled four-track EP.

Deaf Club march into the final!

As revealed tonight in Ramrynia, Persephonia have qualified for a second BJSC final in a row with new entry 'Moving Still' by Deaf Club!

The qualification means Persephonia are guaranteed to end 2012 with a 50% qualification rate, possibly 60% if our next entry also qualifies. It also moves the Q:DNQ ratio of Persephonia (excluding One Big Final contests) closer to even, our 9th progression through semis compared to 11 DNQs.

As should perhaps be expected of Persephonian qualifiers, it does so despite the popular predictions being against it - of 7 countries that predicted semi-final 2's qualifiers, only three correctly predicted Persephonia, ranking it as the joint 15th most guessed country, outside the top 14 who qualify.

'Moving Still' is drawn into 16th place in the final running order. Full semi-final coverage will be posted (ostensibly) tomorrow. EDIT: Or, as could be more realistically expected, never.

Deaf Club complete Persephonia's second double top 20!

After our shock qualification, Persephonia were absolutely dreading a seemingly inevitable last place finish in BJSC XLIX in Cherry Tree City, Ramrynia. However, the fears turned out to be unfounded and indeed the entry, 'Moving Still' by Deaf Club, represents a fairly significant milestone in Persephonian history.

Persephonia can barely even chain together two qualifiers - outside of the One Big Final era, Deaf Club's qualification marked only the third such streak out of 28 entries (one of the previous streaks, from XXIII to XXV, was Persephonia's only streak of 3 qualifiers ever). But now for only the second time in our country's history we can claim to have finished top 20 in the final twice in a row as 'Moving Still' came 19th in a nailbiting final, receiving 72 points. (Last month 'Beat Dun Drop' by Machines Don't Care feat. Meleka went two places and seven points better than that). The adjacent 6th place of Spark's 'Revolving' and 13th place of Beth Ditto's 'I Wrote The Book' in BJSCs XXX and XXXI were the only previous consecutive Persephonia top 20s.

Furthermore, 'Moving Still' received three top scores of 12 points over the course of the final - from N DNTN (whose 12 was reciprocated in our own votes), Isconia and Espen - quite possibly a first in our country's history, though the matter has not been rigorously investigated due to the unexpected nature of the feat. This is in contrast to 'Beat Dun Drop' which didn't receive any top scores despite receiving 7 more points overall than 'Moving Still', showing that the Deaf Club track is more divisive but more appreciated by its smaller target audience.

The 72 points received by 'Moving Still' means it just about beats the tally of 71 scored by XLIV entry 'Restless' by Karin Park to be the seventh most successful Persephonian entry by amount of points received in the final. It's the eighth top 20 hit produced by Persephonia (albeit the lowest peaking of them to date).

The extent of Persephonia's luck in even getting through the semi-final was highlighted by the revelation of the full results for semi-final 2 - we were ranked 13th, needing a top 14 finish to qualify, which on the surface seems like it could be closer but considering the fact two countries (Greenfroze and B.a.N.G) failed to vote in the semi-final and received deductions which put them out of an otherwise secured qualification space it really is somewhat of a miraculous qualification and makes the top 20 finish in the final all the more surprising. 14th placed in the semi-final so arguably even more lucky were Lake Thermwoods, who finished 28th in the final.

Aside from waffly Persephonia news, the main highlight of BJSC XLIX must - of course - be the winner. Fljótavík's entry 'Cerahtonia' by Fibes, Oh Fibes! feat. Icona Pop, a favourite from the start, surprised few in storming to victory with 148 points, the second such win for Fljótavík (who won in BJSC XLI with 'Youth' by Foxes). Persephonian voters are thrilled with this result, as the track received 6 points from Persephonia in the final and Fljótavík were as of last month undoubtedly the most popular nation among Persephonian voters (more on that a bit later in this Bulletin).

The union of Jubirdia put in a very strong effort once again. Ramrynia, the host nation, scored a second top 3 in a row with entry 'Closer' by Tegan And Sara, Hendinia's CHVRCHES with 'The Mother We Share' came 5th, Séyetana were 10th with 'Galaxy' by Sep (a third top 10 finish for them), 'PONPONPON' by Kyarypamyupamyu was 14th for Daehun, 16th was Umiiruka's entry 'Echo' by Foxes and for only the second time ever Aquafina qualified but didn't come last, instead coming 24th with 'We've Only Just Begun' by Michael Woods feat. Ester Dean.

Full detailed final coverage may or may not be posted at a later date.

Jubirdia ongoings - Bellamia humanitarian crisis worsens; Gikwang threatens Umiirukan Girls Aloud fans

It's a tense time around the union of Jubirdia right now, as Bellamia's government continues its shocking ineptitude at dealing with the humanitarian crisis in its country, while an offhand remark from Daehunese Emperor Gikwang has sparked a panic in Umiiruka.

Bellamia has always been a troubled nation, from its inception carrying one of the lowest Human Development Indexes of all of the BJSC world (on a par with other failed states such as Quintessa, Mezidinia and Allecian). Its acceptance into the union of Jubirdia alongside more prosperous nations such as Hendinia and Séyetana, as well as the rapidly improving Persephonia, seemed at first to be achieving its aim of helping the people of Bellamia, but new figures have shown that this was only a temporary boost and the situation in Bellamia is rapidly worsening once more.

The percentage of the population living under the poverty line has hit an all-time high of 95%, the third highest percentage in the BJSC world currently (behind Mezidinia's 97% and Allecian's 99.5%) and life expectancy has plummeted to as low as 13 as famines continue to affect the population more and more. Furthermore, there is evidence that food production is actually increasing as Jubirdia-supplied improved harvesting equipment has been made available to the slave farmers, but less food than ever is making its way into the market and what little food is available is seeing huge inflation even as wages continue to be slashed all around. It is suspected that the Bellamian government is selling all this food to Unovia to make enough money to provide for the elite 5% of the Bellamian population.

The leader of Bellamia has shown very little interest in the swarms of broke and starving peasants in his country, always maintaining a stance of keeping the rich rich rather than helping the poor become less poor. Bellamia actually has a fairly functional economy thanks to its precious oil reserves, its problem is the distribution of wealth among its citizens. Elite businessmen in Bellamia are always quick to point out that Bellamia's gross national product per capita is higher than that of successful countries such as Altyr Muunilinst and Tinnmark and that there is no need for alarm at Bellamia's economical situation - and shockingly most other countries have accepted this and little international interference is occurring.

Persephonian President Salim Zosimus said today that the Bellamian government's actions will no longer be tolerated by Persephonia and advised for them to change or face severe persecution. Zosimus also assured that if a popular revolution were to occur in Bellamia, the army of Persephonia would be firmly on the people's side unless significant changes are made.

In other news, a few days ago Daehun's Emperor Gikwang was caught on tape ranting about Girls Aloud's new single 'Something New' presenting a challenge to 'Fashion Monster' by Kyarypamyupamyu on the national music charts of fellow Jubirdia member Umiiruka.

Kyarypamyupamyu, of course, represented Daehun in BuzzJack Song Contest XLIX in Ramrynia, with her song 'PONPONPON'. Emperor Gikwang of Daehun is a well-known massive fan of the singer and was delighted at midweek sales flashes in Umiiruka revealing her 'Fashion Monster' as heading for the #1 spot. However, by the end of the week the track had been practically caught again by 'Something New' by Girls Aloud (the previous week's #1) on Umiirukan iTunes, an occurrence that had Gikwang fuming with very public anger.

"I swear, if Girls Aloud block my dearest Kyarypamyupamyu from #1 in Umiiruka, I will personally hunt down and execute every single person who bought 'Something New'", Gikwang says in a clearly furious tone in the 3 minute 48 second clip that was leaked to the internet by a Daehunese citizen who captured the rant on his camera while filming a butterfly flying around for an amateur movie he was in the process of creating.

'Something New' eventually ended up at #2 behind the Kyarypamyupamyu track and Gikwang has issued an apology for the remark - but it caused a severe panic among the over 200,000 devoted fans of Girls Aloud which included Umiirukan President Federica Pellegrini herself. Pellegrini agreed not to press any charges for the incident but the two leaders are still yet to formally speak to each other since.

LIES. Allecian has a 5% below the poverty line. Furthermore, we are a member of Jubirdia, you just refuse to recognise our membership!

We see through your propaganda.

Personally I say we cease all trade with Bellamia to speed up the complete destruction of their country (and after that, the slow and painful recovery!).

Denial doesn't make the problem go away Alex :(

Denial doesn't make the problem go away Alex :(

A lesson Joseph is learning as we speak.

This article is full of complete BULLSHIT. Daehun has NOT issued an apology and will NOT do so in the near future regarding the Girls Aloud incident. :)

Has the Daehun media ever NOT lied about what's going on in their country?
