June 5, 201213 yr It's the Paul McCartney position that I have a problem with - an awful lot of those sales are for singles billed solely to "Wings" with no mention of McCartney himself. I think they should be separated out.
October 20, 201212 yr Last Week, The OCC announced that Girls Aloud have sold over 4.3 Million Singles, in the UK. The OCC points out that those Sales make them the UK's biggest selling Girl Group of the 21st Century - but, they have not really had a lot of rivals, in that category. LINK:, http://goo.gl/TnsxP I estimate that 4.3 Million is enough for Girls Aloud to be about 70th, in the List of the UK's Best Selling Singles Acts - am I right? It is 3.6 Million less than the Spice Girls, who are in 20th place, with around 7.9 Million UK Singles Sales. Edited October 20, 201212 yr by zeus555
October 21, 201212 yr The Sugababes aren't far off, they're over 4mil I believe. They've a bit more on the albums side though. Embarrassingly both still dwarfed by the spice girls after all these years in both categories!
October 21, 201212 yr Girls Aloud are very big in the UK & Ireland, but they mean little elsewhere. They've had 2 Top 10 Hits in Belgium, & 1 in both Sweden & The Netherlands, & that's it for GA Top 10 Hits outside the British Isles. (None made the Top 5 in those Countries, & they have only ever had Top 10 Albums in the UK & Ireland). Even in the UK, their 20 Top 10 Hits have only been in the Top 10 for 60 Weeks. Which is just an average of 3 Weeks per Top 10 Hit. They are only 74th= in the List of Acts with the most Top 10 Singles Weeks. And their 10 Weeks at No.1 here, (8 with Singles & 2 with Albums), are only enough to make them 129th= in the List of Acts with the most UK Weeks at No.1. (Spice Girls are 14th, with 40 Weeks at No.1 - 22 with Singles, & 18 with Albums). Spice Girls sold far more Records, & made a much bigger International impact..... Most of Girls Aloud's singles were released in a chart era where Top 10 longevity was reserved for very few *really big* singles. It was extremely fast moving. I think the fact they're the highest selling girl group in the UK of the past 12 years is somewhat more important than chart statistics based on weeks. Their overall sales are pretty impressive considering the height of their fame was during a very low sales period. The international comments are a moot point, given that they were never given a proper push elsewhere. The European Top 10 hits you mentioned were achieved with either very little promotion, or none at all, in 2003. Beyond that, they only went to Australia for less than a week in 2006, and managed a Top 30 placing. The Spice Girls seriously meant business when it came to promoting themselves worldwide, so it's not the fairest comparison to draw.
