Well that suggests that Radio 1 have more listeners than Capital

I found that somewhat confusing too - does 'reach' indicate how many people actually listened to the station over the period?

Yes, "reach" is the number of people who listened to the station at some point in the survey period. Interesting to note that Radio 2 is way ahead of R1 (more listeners who stay tuned for longer) but that probably has relatively little influence on the charts. R2's influence might be greater if more singles had physical releases.

Or if the singles market was geared to an older audience!

More younger people listen to their ipods while walking along to work etc so therefore the singles market is dominated by under 25s imo!older people dont generally listen to ipods and listen to music at home so still generally buy cds and vinyl or have a car to listen to music!

This is an interesting point, actually.

I'm 46, and listen to my iPod mostly when walking - rarely at home.

What about others here - when/where do you listen to your iPod/MP3 player most?

I made that point with reference to my own routine - i dont drive a car so walk most places and ALWAYS have my ipod playing. I update my 'on the go' list every 2 weeks with upcoming singles i downloaded and take from albums using the release schedule on here and delete old ones and listen to the radio at work. People who drive would probably listen to the radio and then buy cds to listen to at home on a saturday night on their 'record player' (like my dad does). But they would have less need for an ipod - hence the singles chart even more so tha in the past is becoming very much the domain for the u-25s who live through their i-pods/smart phones.
