SORRY I'M LATE

Right, no title for mine, but it has been divided into two very distinct halves.

1.1 - Like The xx on poppers - same echoey sounds but hopped up on a trance beat. There are two vocal lines, one of which I can't understand, and the second goes on about "chasing fireflies" which really fits the twilight rave soundscape. 08/10

1.2 - CSS - Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above Quite probably my favourite CSS song, so when this came on I began to figure this compilation would definitely work for me. If this was a rave, I'd probably be dancing to this before 1.1. 10/10

1.3 - Steve Mac - Paddy's Revenge And when I heard this I started to worry that maybe this disc wasn't for me after all... at least it's brief. 05/10

1.4 - I should definitely know who this is... but I don't. "Sowing the seeds of love" will probably help most of you twig. Six minutes of sub-Aerosmith wild vocals (and I hate Aerosmith) with an oddly soft chorus. Interesting instrumentation, though - moves from guitar and awkward trumpet to classical violins to wild church organ. Always returns to the sowed seeds though and it goes on for far too long. 06/10

1.5 - An odd interlude with what sounds like a drag queen singing a jaunty tune from the 1950s. It's fun enough, but I can't imagine where it comes from. Feels less like an example of an album and more something that was probably out of place to begin with. 06/10

1.6 - Bastille - Overjoyed A band I've never thoroughly explored but always like when I hear them. I love the production on this song, it feels so desolate. 09/10

1.7 - Gentle guitar opens and introduces a male and female vocal singing in unison, before swinging into a more bouyant chorus. Lively but with a touch of melancholy. Just a really lovely song. 09/10

1.8 - New Young Pony Club - You Used To Be A Man Never got into this band as much as I should have, but I did have a short infatuation with this song when it came out earlier this year. Weirdly minimalist, the vocal lines do most of the rhythmic work. 08/10

The second half is entirely instrumental and I don't recognise a single track.

2.1 - Camponologists REJOICE - bells ring for a minute and a half. Not really sure how this qualifies as music but it's perfectly pleasant anyway. I do love how sharply it cuts out. 07/10

2.2 - More church-adjacent music - hallowed monk chants start and then become cut up by Burial's beats. It might not acually be Burial but it uses the trip-hop beats he uses so beautifully so I'm assuming it is. Burial is someone whose albums I need to GET ON so this is a helpful prod. I also have a weird soft spot for these sounds of monastic solemnity so this really works for me. 09/10

2.3 - Violin broken disc which reminds me of 1.3 for a while, even if the track around it quickly builds to a more twinkly and atmospheric feel. Doesn't really go anywhere, sadly. 05/10

2.4 - Again, mixes choral and trip-hop, and I'm starting to tire of the repetitive feel to every track. This does have a bit more snap to the reverb but at 4:30 it needs more than that to keep my interest. 05/10

2.5 - And yet more choral trip-hop. Underscored by a nice percussive rhythm and halfway through it all drops out for a while and builds back up with a low bass beat. Too long again but more interesting musically than the last two. 06/10

2.6 - I'm zoning out, I'm afraid. There's a vague melody to this one but it remains on one level throughout and I can't even think of anything else to say. 04/10

2.7 - Same again. I like the trumpet. 05/10

2.8 - I have run out of things to say. Makes fuller use of the choral chants so it feels a little grander than the preceding tracks. If it hadn't been for those, I might like this a little more. 06/10

2.9 - Short. Kinda creepy religious intonation. 06/10

2.10 - I approached this with trepidation as it's 6:10 long, but it has a richer soundscape than most of this side, and thankfully ends the CD with an atmospheric touch of evocative sadness. There's the faintest hint of female vocal which has been chopped up to hell, but the tone still feels affecting. Not nearly as tiring as the preceding tracks despite being a fair bit longer. 08/10

This is most definitely a disc of two halves. The accessible first side is recommended to anyone, but the second half is definitely an acquired taste and though I liked some of it, it was mostly very tiresome. First half, 8/10, second half, 5/10 - so overall, I'll give this a 6.5/10.

I've become increasingly sure this is C.W.'s CD, due to the presence of his BJSC entry 'Overjoyed' and just the general feel of the first half.

I'm really intrigued by the second half of that one. Been listening to Burial lots of late so will be checking out anything even remotely similar.

And yes, change your name back Tyrren.

That is indeed mine :D (David right? it feels weird calling you 'random' :P ) I'm glad you liked it overall, the second half was a risk, but I'm glad you liked parts of it

there was not theme in particular, it was just a selection of little known discoveries I'd found over the last year

1.1 - Like The xx on poppers - same echoey sounds but hopped up on a trance beat. There are two vocal lines, one of which I can't understand, and the second goes on about "chasing fireflies" which really fits the twilight rave soundscape. 08/10

1.1: Parachute Youth - Can't Get Better Than This

This was my BJSC entry three contests ago, it flopped and I was really annoyed as I love this. You're right about the twilight rave soundscape, I love the haunting vocal lines and creepy refrain. Its really infectious after a few listens as well. Be sure to take a look at the video, it adds something great to it.

1.2 - CSS - Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above Quite probably my favourite CSS song, so when this came on I began to figure this compilation would definitely work for me. If this was a rave, I'd probably be dancing to this before 1.1. 10/10

1.2 - CSS - Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above

I recall this at the time, but forgot about it completely and actually only discovered last year when it was on my flatmate's ipod, it is amazing though, very haunting but bloody infectious at the same time.

1.3 - Steve Mac - Paddy's Revenge And when I heard this I started to worry that maybe this disc wasn't for me after all... at least it's brief. 05/10

1.3 - Steve Mac - Paddy's Revenge

aww not a fan? :P I feel this is quite well known, but not by all so I included it. I love the Irish influences and the vocals effects are strange but followed by that instrumental section makes for a great dance song, not to everyone's taste maybe :P

1.4 Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love

Quite easy to work out the title for this one :P Another one I've known about for a while, but only really clicked recently. Its an old one of course, dates back to the 80s, but I do feel its forgotten amongst their back catalogue. It is a little bit long and repetitive, but as you said, the instrumentation is great. Its very Beatles-esque and has a rather dark, political theme despite the initial appearance of the track.

1.5 - An odd interlude with what sounds like a drag queen singing a jaunty tune from the 1950s. It's fun enough, but I can't imagine where it comes from. Feels less like an example of an album and more something that was probably out of place to begin with. 06/10

1.5 Tiny Tim - Livin' In The Sunlight, Lovin' In The Moonlight

You're right, it is indeed from the 1950s! :D it has quite a history and was on an old musical originally I think. Its so balmy and happy that its just impossible for me to dislike, it does sound very out of place on here, but my whole Itunes library is  it fits surprisingly well with mayhem and chaos scenes as well, it was also on the first ever episode of Spongebob Squarepants, don't you remember? :P

1.6 - Bastille - Overjoyed A band I've never thoroughly explored but always like when I hear them. I love the production on this song, it feels so desolate. 09/10

1.6 Bastille - Overjoyed

My BJSC entry the contest before Parachute Youth, it sorta flopped in at last as well, but did better than I thought it would. I'm glad you liked it, its so beautifully sung and emotional and that guitar line   I also haven't explored them fully, but this has certainly made me take notice.

1.7 - Gentle guitar opens and introduces a male and female vocal singing in unison, before swinging into a more bouyant chorus. Lively but with a touch of melancholy. Just a really

lovely song. 09/10

1.7 Of Monsters & Men - Dirty Paws

Again, glad you liked this and I thought you'd already know it so that's good. I've only discovered this band recently, but this is amazing, the lyrics are confusing and seem quite daft (one of them's in my title!) but they give a slightly sinister feel and the production is indeed very melancholy. If you haven't already, I'd recommend their album, its really great and they look set to fond commercial success in the UK soon, so I can only hope they re-release this

1.8 - New Young Pony Club - You Used To Be A Man Never got into this band as much as I should have, but I did have a short infatuation with this song when it came out earlier this year. Weirdly minimalist, the vocal lines do most of the rhythmic work. 08/10

1.8 New Young Pony Club - You Used To Be a Man

I don't love this as much as I do my other ones, but its still very understated and it seems to build and build with hushed vocal tones. Odd production I agree, but a good one.

The Second half was all the same artist, Forss, a berlin composer, basically, it was a short album which mixed up choral vocals with everyday sounds and noises, I thought it sounded so unique and so I wanted to spread the word. I have to agree with you, it does get a little repetitive and it was a huge risk putting the whole album on, but I at least wanted to make people aware of his presence.

The track listing is thus:

2.1 Introitus

2.2 Voca Nomen Tuum

2.3 Me Apparo

2.4 In Paradisum

2.5 Diligam

2.6 Dictum

2.7 Regulus

2.8 Somnio Somnium

2.9 Veniam

2.10 Lux Aeterna

I won't comment on every single one obviously as they do sort of start to merge in after a while, but its all very moody and a unique way if composing and creating atmosphere, its a shame you didn't like Dictum & In Paradisum as they were some of my favourites, I thought that organ was very creepy and atmospheric. I sent In Paradisum last contest to BJSC, it of course flopped, but it was one way of raising awareness :P I think that's my favourite though, I love the swirling vocals and tense, atmospheric feel that builds up the end.

Anyways, thats my CD explained, I'm sorry the second half went a bit in one ear out the other, but I'm glad you liked the first half and I've given you a few discoveries. :D

Forss sounds right up my street, I think I'm going to download the album as it sounds lovely from the descriptions...
Thanks - although I downloaded it earlier from itunes. I quite like it on first play, good for evening listening - which is exactly what I shall be doing this evening!
Tony can I have the link for your cd, you did the one that was meant to be listened to at night, right?

I should be able to take part in the next CD Swap when it starts. I can inflict some unknown tracks by Aqua and Mark Medlock onto my unsuspecting listener.

Is it too soon to do another one of these? I'm in the mood for CD making.

I've been feeling this too! What about early March? During the gap between the next UP.

Also, I'd love to run it again (as this isn't like UP or BJSC where there's a benefit to hosting), but if anyone has really been desiring to try and run it feel free to let me know!

I'd be up for this again. My thoughts have been turning towards tgis and thinking of tracks I could use. I think I have more fum making my CDs.

Oh, also I just remember proposing the idea of actually knowing who you're making the CD for before sending it — so you could cater to their tastes instead of giving them something they'd be totally disinterested in. Thoughts on that? (They'd still receive it anonymously)

I'm happy with either.

Though knowing who I'm making it for would only enable me to have an idea whether they would like it or not before the recipient is revealed!

I sort of like the whole mystery of not knowing who has what. Finding out who had your compilation when they post their review at the end and thinking "oh noes".

I like that aspect of it also Hits.

Grebo hated mine last time but I didn't mind, I was making it with someone like Gooddelta in mind and it just didn't work out. There was a small amount of glee at the realisation that Grebo was going to hate it though! :D

This was great fun and I was really happy with the CD I received! Knowing who you have to make the CD for is appealing but I guess some people like the mystery behind it all. I don't really mind either way!
