^ I think Wide Awake has missed its chance anyway, Taylor or not. Flo Rida got #1 this week, and he's got more sales and streaming than Katy I think, and the airplay gap between them is closing too.

 

Spectrum (the Calvin Harris remix) goes for pop/mainstream radio adds on 28th August (I think that was the date) as Florence's next single, so perhaps they'll wait until after that to push Sweet Nothings as Calvin's 4th US single, so as to not have two songs by the same pairing impacting at the same time, as one could easily overshadow the other.

Haven't seen the updates for the last few days, Ellie at #1! What an achievement :o and with a song that didn't do anything in the UK..so strange!

I have to say, the random blowing up of Don't Wake Me Up after flopping for months on end absolutely screams payola. I'm generally not one for conspiracy theories but I just don't understand how a song can go from doing nothing to absolutely exploding (it's getting really big gains even if it's not being tracked) for no reason.

A similar thing happened with Scream. It seemed to be slowing down and about to peak, I think low top 10-ish, and then suddenly, out of nowhere, it started gaining like 2 million per days for weeks. Seemed really suspicious too.

 

I think payola is illegal, but it does seem a bit strange. I noticed a few times songs start getting bigger updates in the US if they do well in the UK (e.g. This is Love was flopping in the US but shortly after it went #1 in the UK, it started getting good updates and went top 50 on pop briefly I think), so maybe that's what happened with Chris's song.

 

Don't Wake Me Up is his last pop song on the album, so it's "important" that it's a hit there, since after this, he won't be able to have any more pop singles, unless he releases an urban song to pop (I reckon he could pull off Bassline maybe), or re-releases the album.
