I never liked it. but I doubt any other song would have done better. It was no longer their time.

If the first part shocked you, don't worry - I'm absolutely sure I'm the odd one here with my taste in music. :)

If it was the second part, well, considering what followed, even the Girls themselves thought so (apart from Nadine, apparently). I'm not happy about it either, but that doesn't change it.

Welcome to the forum! :D Definitely disagree with you about Something New :kink: It's my favourite of theirs easily, so so good and a perfect GA track! It being a relative flop was really saddening to see :(

Trust me, there are weirder music tastes on this site! :kink:

The comeback was indeed a bit of a 'let's quickly tie up the loose ends and cash in a bit' :(

I do agree actually (not about the song, it's fabulous), in this day and age a lot can change in the pop world even in 2-3 years, let alone 4. I think it was just a fanbase thing and I did want it to do better, but at that point their time had passed.

It was pretty much the same story when Spice Girls and All Saints came back after a long time away, even if the latter had a pop masterpiece under their belt. :(

It's such a shame they chose to have a break when they were on the cusp of becoming absolutely HUGE here in the UK. :(

This might be a good time for me to write something positive at last: Rock Steady even impressed me :)

I definitely agree that they decided to take their break at completely the wrong time! I think they had at least one more studio album left in them. They'd reached new commercial heights with the 'Out of Control' album (their first studio album to #1, which became the 8th best selling album of 2008 :o ) and the tour was their biggest yet. Their popularity just kept increasing, so it was a great shame that they essentially threw it away.

Girls Aloud's collective loss was most definitely Cheryl's gain though... her first solo album definitely came along at the right time for her.

Do any of you remember back in 2009 that we were assured by their website that they'd signed a 3-album deal and that they'd definitely be back in 2010?

I think the 2012 comeback was handled wrongly. I'm sure I've written this before, but I really think they should have made it completely clear at the October 2012 press conference to everyone (and Nadine :kink: ) that the reunion was ultimately going to be the last thing they did, and that it was a farewell tour. I think this news would have generated a *lot* of publicity/interest in the comeback as a whole. I think they actually left the public feeling a bit confused about the purpose of the comeback, which therefore made them feel apathetic towards it. The whole "we'll wait and see how it goes" thing (quote from Kimberley :) ) was the worst thing they could have done really. Announcing the split on Twitter after they'd finished the tour was a huge anti-climax.

Also I don't think the "we've been around for 10 years" tagline went down too well, because everyone knew that it had been 7 + a three year break, which isn't quite as impressive sounding. A 10th anniversary it may have been, but it wasn't really 10 years of Girls Aloud. If they'd continued as a group right up to the 10 year point and beyond, I think people would have commended them for that.

So yeah, I just think a lot of it was done wrongly. It's probably a miracle that 'Something New' even got to #2 tbh, and for it being their second compilation, 'Ten' did reasonably well too. I do think that the 'Ten' era had the potential to be so much bigger than it was though. Plus Kimberley's book put an even bigger dampener on it too, tainting it further. -_-

I'll stop rambling now!

Surely we can hold someone accountable for this at a trial at The Hague??
The strange thing is how much more popular Cheryl was than the band both before and after the comeback. How is it that when you put Cheryl with 4 other girls, her fans seem to disappear?

Not every Cheryl fan is necessarily a fan of Girls Aloud. I reckon a few Cheryl fans were probably annoyed with the GA reunion.

The Cheryl fans did seem relatively against Girls Aloud. Which is annoying because their musical heights can't even be challenged by Cheryl's solo stuff, there is no comparison.

I do agree with Jay that the break REALLY damaged them. They were MASSIVE for the OOC era, but that wasn't long enough for their status to hold any resonance with the public. They needed another year at that status, and then they could have probably survived a two year break - 3 years was always too long. So they should have bounced straight off the strengths of OOC and recorded another album, even a re-release would have done them well.

At very least, they should have come back a year earlier than they did with a normal studio album and then maybe done the Ten - Greatest Hits thing.

Be thankful there's no warn bar for moderators x

If there was such a bar, you'd most likely do the same as Nadine's album did with the Top 40, i.e. stayed out of there.
